Anyone who comes to this web site looking for in depth advice on any topic except bdsm is stupid.

Anyone who questions the advice or qualifications of the folks here is unaware.

It should ALL be questioned. With regards to mental health any adivce other than. "seek professional help" should be ignored.

Anyone who demands evidence of qualifications can go fuck themselves.

That would be.... you know... do people in professions feel the need to clarify inaccurate information regarding their field when posting online?

My field is really weird. The more educated I become in my field, the less qualified I feel to comment. People are often posting inaccurate crap in relation to my field...n

Every time people post about ethnicity, multiculturalism, etc etc etc, it seems like they are 10 years behind the things anthropologists are talking about. The reason is quite simple, those who are established enough to have a real voice in popular culture usually are those whose pet theories were the rage about a decade ago...

So, if I tell people they are "wrong", for one they might not be according to such and such luminary in my field.... at the same time in order for me to get people to think about anthropology in the same way I do would require a reading list, and I am just not patient enough to run down that many links to post to people....

Although it is usually not a life and death situation that people understand what I do...lol

barelynangel -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:07:47 AM)

Even when someone is toting themselves to BE a certain profession Jeff and they utilize same to attempt to get credibility to discount someone?

I mean the OP herself says -- as a mental health professional i have a duty.   You don't believe clarification of that should be questioned IF they are using same to indicate their information is MORE correct?

Sorry, i disagree, while yes i do agree its stupid for people to take any advise regarding things like mental health and medical and legal online from anonymous nicknames, i believe when someone uses the statement i am a mental health professional or i am a medical professional or i am a legal professional to make a point can be questioned because THEY are opening it for further examination.  Professional how and in what capacity?  IF people don't want to open themselves up for further examination of their credentials then they shouldn't USE a vague concept to support whatever they say unless they are ready for further examination into same.

If they are posting as simply an anonymous nickname then they aren't opening themselves up for same.

Jeffff -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:12:07 AM)

I don't care what someone proclaims themselves to be. The onus is on the questioner.

WHen I joined here, I checked the "Dom" box. No one asked me to prove it.

The same goes for advice. If you want good advice on an important subject, see a professional.

I don't care if it is your emotions, your brain, your computer or your car.

Depending on strangers for quality advice is foolish.

If she had went on a thread and advised someone about their mental health condition I would agree with you, can you show me an example of this? I haven't seen it...

On the other hand if she starts a thread and says "Hey, I have this expertise, and when I see noobs distributing mental health advise incorrectly, so I have an obligation to point that out?"... No, she is not taking the mantle of mental health provider on this thread, she is asking what her role should be, as anyone with an ethical compass would...

Answer is pretty simple, point people to accurate information and recommend they see a professional...

Now how can you twist this conversation as one in which someone would need to verify their creds? That is just silly

I rarely ask for advice on this site, other then something innocuous like "What sort of present should I buy?" "What kind of restaurant would you recommend"... you know, I choose to ask for advice on topics where no one ends up bloody, maimed, or emotionally harmed....just weird like that

barelynangel -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:22:30 AM)

I agree Jeff whole heartedly, but i don't believe i have ever seen you indicate in a discussion that I AM A DOM so this is true that is true and the other is true then yeah, Jeff, people would be asking you to clarify what being a dom means to you, what experience you have, and what your knowledge is.

When someone says i am a medical professional and A, B, and C, it is an implied concept of credibility.  I for one like more accurate information because personally medical professional could mean the copy person in the medical records department of a hospital.   To me people are way too gullible about these professions so some people do believe medical professional means doctor or at the very least a nurse.   So yeah, to me qualifying the statement is important.

There are many stupid people on boards like this who will see the word "professional" and apply it to the highest concept they know in that field.   If you are that desperate to protect people from wrong information, i don't see why you wouldn't offer your credentials when implying you are a professional so these people are protected from their own stupid presumptions as people who presume wrong information is correct information?

Professionals arent always trustworthy sources of information either it often turns out. I have a doctor friend who tells me how full of doo doo many doctors are.

Use your noggin and intuition and ask where you feel drawn to ask and when you get the information run it through your own filters and take responsibility for the information if you are going to use it for your own self.

Jeffff -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:29:20 AM)

I do NOT own any mandals!

Or shorts, but that is another story.

In my professional opinion as a designer of high quality foot wear, no man should ever where mandals!

I absolutely agree with you. I actually did seek professional help with depression about 5 years ago.... he did not help me. After a year of seeing him, doing my own research with my PC, I began taking proactive steps with diet and exercise.... quit smoking, etc, and began to feel better. I also learned strategies to deal with anxiety. The therapist did not help at all....My problem was mostly organic.

What certificate do you have to support that professional opinion... you fraud! First you post a fake photo and then this....

Jeffff -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:36:56 AM)

The foot wear industry is top heavy with homosexuals, not that there is anything wrong with that.

If it became common knowledge that I was straight, my job could be endangered.

You are just going to have to take my word as the final thoughts on all things "foot wear"

Jeffff -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:40:47 AM)

I read the OP. I would say it is her nature to try to help anyone.

Knowing her from her posts only I would say folks could do worse.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Inaccurate Info (6/20/2010 10:42:35 AM)

The OP wrote about how her professional ethic sometimes made her feel the need to correct bad info.  I applaud that.

There will always be morons offering advice on subjects and always be morons taking that advice as fact. (not speaking of the OP here).  We are all adults here, well, we are all of legal age supposedly.  As adults, we can decide whos advice we value, whos we reject, and whos we research further to make a decision.

This goes for people who claim to be professionals or more educated regarding any subject.  Mental health, proper bondage techniques, how much one asshole can stretch, or the one twue way of slavery.

It is all words on a computer screen, until the reader makes the choice to accept or reject it.  I hope folks who are educated in mental health issues continue to offer opinions.  For some on this site, that may be the only good advice they get.

Thanks for a great thread sunshine.

BTW, I an Serv-Safe certified.  I will be happy to educate ya on the FATTOM rules anytime.
