The modern Brits abroad....arrrgh, I have seen it, I have done my share of cheap package holidays to Portugal, the Algarve, and it made me cringe to think what I saw was my own countrymen abroad. When I travel abroad, I try to stay unnoticed, low key that sort of thing, but those that make me cringe are so blatantly Brits for they are loud, uncaring and arrogant, even offensive in some ways to the indigenous population and me. Now, my understanding is when one goes abroad, it is an adventure, everything is, even the food, but in the holiday resorts I have been to down there on the Med, British food is commonly available and they are stacked out with customers eating British type food, bangers and mash, egg and chips etc. The Mediterranean holiday resorts I have likened to Blackpool with sun, as they are so similar. When I partake of the cheap foreign package deals, I do so only for the hotel, cheap flight and transfers, but when I get to my destination, I hire a car and get the hell out of it, drive and see something of the country I have visited and find non tourist beaches. But I also have reverted to the use of a foreign language in the presence of my countrymen, especially the pests that try to find Brits to sell them a timeshare. Though I am not fluent or even near capable in another language, I do know bits of some Scandinavian languages and German and I use a mix of what I know to let the pests think I am foreign and there no interest to them. It's sad really, when abroad trying not to be associated with your countrymen also abroad speaks volumes to those we visit. When questioned why we keep away, the answer is because they are so embarrassing and not indicative of many of our people, not all our people are like that, but unfortunately many foreign country's oppinion of us comes from what they met on holiday, be they the residents or other holiday makers.
