No one is racist at heart A - its part of being human to prefer our own over others, however our own is defined - and that could be by language, culture, religion or any other facet, not just our ethnic or geographical origin, or whatever other conditional aspect we might be subject to. The question as so often is whether we shall be the animals we are or the gods that we are.

When we have eliminated racism, then racist jokes will be acceptable. In the meantime they aid and abet racism which is not only divisive, offensive and dangerous but also ridiculous.

And racist jokes are not a purely British thing either; theyre a human thing arising from conditional preferences that serve bad ends.

yeah but the IIWW is even longer ago and you do get often judged on it over here as a German, even when quite frankly, that topic couldn't bother me much less than it does as it is, as well said in your example, as well a rather long time ago.

Have you ever pretended to be a foreigner in the presence of other brits in the UK ?

Now the UK if full to the gunnels with foreigners, it works a treat. Next time you get approached by chuggers [charity muggers] , just hold out a hand, and look totally bewildered and say " No speaky the English."

I find it works best in my Bulgarian drawl

It would become pretty boring if we start standardizing what we can and cannot joke about.

The humor often comes from pushing the edge of what people are comfortable with.

I often don't need to as people generally leave me alone except security guards and cops, it must be something to do with my appearance as I am not sending out mental waves saying come to, come to me, for I am different from the norm, so am an obvious threat. If it isn't that, just what is it, as I always seem to be a magnet for authority figures.

I do  when confronted by figures of authority speak in my best Queen's English devoid of accent, which I have been told comes across as upper class, for I can assimilate accents well, due to a long held interest in the more picturesque speech and it's etymology. Speaking how I do with these people  and with perfect politeness and courtesy does take them aback somewhat and I see that, for I can only guess what they are expecting.

What also works with chuggers, is mentioning but one word, and this works for in store loyalty card sales people as well, whether it is true or not, the word Unemployed fends them off.

Recently they had here an event where a homeless charity or charity-to-be collected food...so people who went into the store were given pieces of paper to show them what items they need.....as I understood they pack boxes with the same stuff and then give it to the families in need...

now...in general not a bad idea...

however, how it was handled did put me off and so I decided not to contribute.

First of all I wasn't up for it that day anyway as right now I only manage to pay my bills thanks to my ex.
And secondly that guy pushed that leaflet so onto me that he almost hit me into my gut...

me waking up properly that day after ending up with that thing in my hand taking a moment to figure out what that was about...and tried to take it easy...and go along with it...despite the fact that I disapproved of the way how he gave it to me...

then I had a look at the list...and read "rice (1kg)".

well....that settled it then...me dumping that leaflet in the bananas.

Asking for help and support...fine...get it...but after being tried to push into helping that charity-to-be in the first place then being almost told what amount to buy....was too much for me that day...

now, fine when they say they put 1kg rice bags into their boxes...but quite frankly they can also do so with adding smaller amounts together...[8|] but of course that would require to calculate amounts [8|]

I emailed them when I got home to let them know that they actually can put people off if they approach people the way how I was approached on that day, but "what a surprise" never got an answer back [8|]

Next time when I get pushed something onto me like that I will make sure to push it right back [>:]

.I am not tight fisted, I have given money and food to poor peeps in the Far East, as well as here. But I wont be giving anything to anyone who attempts to harass or embarrass me in public. Neither will I give anything to anyone who calls at my door pestering for money.

I am in charge of my do-gooding, and no one else.

The chuggers are out all day long here, and not just ones and two’s. They are usually eight to ten strong.

Yeah but I think this country could do better if people would take more action against bad service...as I often heard and experienced...complaining isn't that common here...I run out of energy and gave up by now to complain about bad service...and in general I am not someone who does complain a lot ... but some events here were just amazing that they happened in the first place [8|]

Oh, I'm quite happy to complain. I don't think that's something the British have ever had a problem with. It's nearly a national sport.

In WW1....the French took a battering from the Germans....and gave plenty back.....they lost something like 350 thousand men in the first few weeks of the war which is staggering.....but still finished on the winning side...I don't think any other country has lost so many men in such a short space of time and turned it round.



The US lost 620,000 dead in a war and survived to become a world power...But...I am not questioning the courage of the French...just that they were inept at war.

And as far as that goes we are pretty inept ourselves of late.

The French lost more than a million dead.....and a similar number wounded or surrendered.....the point I was making was 300 and odd thousand in a few weeks.

Moaners yes, the British excel at this. Complainers, hhmmnn not often. Do-ers seldom if ever. The French are a different matter all together. If it were them, they would have prised the cobbles from the roads by now, and would be hurling them through the windows of Parliament. I despair sometimes, knowing nothing will never change.

The liberals tell the government what to do. The government tell the people what to think, and like weary sheep, we stand idly by. We need a fresh civil war
