DCWoody -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 11:09:52 AM)

I've never heard anything that I'd previously thought of like that, however I can see what ya mean when I think about BNP types complaining that no-one dares make jokes about muslims....which is accurate to what you say, but.....ya gotta admit they also have a point to some extent.

Does the person saying something, or their motive for saying something....affect the validity of the statement? I reckon not.

Moonhead -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 11:18:42 AM)

The thing is though, they're wrong. There's plenty of anti muslim jokes about, and it isn't (despite what a few idiots are bleating about dhimmitude) banned from the media either.
I mean, Jerry Sadowitz was doing a downright vicious routine about the fatwah on Salman Rushdie back in '89, and while Four Lions is a bit too soft centred for taste, it's pretty unsparing in making the domestic Taliban wannabes look like incompetent idiots. Then there's the (nastier and funnier) film by that poor Dutch guy, several films and comics by people who've been chased out of Iran (Persepolis in particular is horribly funny in places), that South Park episode there was the kerfuffle over, all kinds of stuff. It's a bit feeble claiming that none of this exists because everybody is too scared to make jokes about muslims, particularly when you hear a load of Paki bashing one liners every time you go to a pub...

DCWoody -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 11:41:25 AM)

They exist, but.....to illustrate my point perfectly,that southpark episode wasn't shown. There's certainly less potentially offensive to muslims humour than there 'should' be IMO. Very odd use of the word should, but ya get my point.

"particularly when you hear a load of Paki bashing one liners every time you go to a pub" Never have, but...probably something to do with living in leicester.

As for bans, that 2006 act did come damn close to doing so before Atkinson got all pissed.

Moonhead -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 11:45:12 AM)

There's a lot of bloody ugly pubs in Stoke, so that could well have something to do with it, yes.

The South Park episode wasn't broadcast, but it is on youtube and the torrent sites and a lot of people who can't normally be arsed with South Park have watched it on there.

DCWoody -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 11:58:44 AM)

I know I know, but the point stands, there is some censorship, self and otherwise, of muslim targeted jokes.

Is it okay for complaints about this on freedom of speech grounds, but not on racist grounds?

Make it black people instead of muslims to remove the religious complications.

The statement 'jokes about stereotypes involving black people shouldn't be censored, because black people suck'.

The stupidity of post comma doesn't affect the accuracy of pre comma. (assuming you would think 'jokes about stereotypes involving black people shouldn't be censored, because [succinct anti-censorship argument here]' was accurate)

I am not really sure why I'm making that exact point though, I seem to have forgotten what I was getting at. I feel very strongly that I was correct though :)

Almost all jokes are theoretically offensive. Make a joke about liverpudlian isn't racist, but about the scottish is. And certainly don't make jokes about 'africans'. It's a load of bollocks. Brits will be familiar with mock the week. Topical comedian show over here, irish guy & scottish guy regularly (nigh constantly) insulting the irish and the scottish respectively, and perfectly respectable BBC2 fare it is, occassionally they have that woman on there, who does the same for Nigerian parenting, and youth black culture. All fine and good.....but try doing it a different way round and cue the shitstorm.
It's a load of bollocks.

And @xxsve, jokes are funny/not funny independantly of being theoretically offensive or not....if anything, the unoffensive ones are less amusing.

Last time there was a somewhat similar discussion my post was censored, so I'll avoid telling any jokes here.

The key word in 'racist jokes' is jokes, nobody imporant anywhere is against offensive jokes, because I can't think of a single comedian, anywhere, ever.....not using them. Some people just get stupidly touchy about some subjects.

If it just gets a fakey ha ha, and not a belly laugh, it ain't really funny.

xssve -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 12:39:13 PM)

Anyway, I'm half Norwegian, and we only tell jokes about Swedes.

The other half is French and the French have no sense of humor.

Moonhead -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 12:56:41 PM)

I doubt that about the French. Very funny people, most of the French I've met, and a lot of their media is hilarious. Are you seriously saying that Asterix or Les Volseuses aren't funny?

Is there some sort of rivalry between Norway and Sweden? I'd heard that the Swedish advertising campaign for The Life Of Brian was something along the lines of "A film so funny it's been banned in Norway..."

Mark Twain said "Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand."

So even 'racist' jokes can be used in a way to assault racism.  When used in that way (as many comedians do) it's not only funny but healing.

Moonhead -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 2:17:27 PM)

The other side of that, of course, is that when humour is used to reinforce bigotry and small mindedness, it's equally offensive.

None of you have a clue. And you don't know how hard a real racist with a real brain can hit. I decline to do it. Want the joke, mail me. Other than that forget it. I don't care what the fuck you are, you will probably laugh.

But all these whiney babies who SCREAM - you are not allowed to hurt my feelings, will perish. Fukum, they accused me of being a primedonna at work and upheld my end because I am that fucking good. They get by on what, their looks ? You see it happens to ugly people all the time, but I will deliver it to supermodels. Fuck you bitch. I ain't doing that.

Good looking/fugly, white skin/black skin, accent or no accent, Arab or Jew,  it's all the same.

It simply doesn't matter anymore.

Joke all you want, but there is the TOS. I got yanked for "You might ber a Turk if..." So what ?

That is actually a really good question.

My own perspective is coming from the freedom of speech argument, so I'm less inclined to draw a distinction. The stupidity of their reasoning doesn't contradict my reasoning that even the stupid should be able to voice their stupidity.

I found this while I was lolling at Alvin Greene clips and I really like what Penn Jillette had to say. You can say what you want to say, and other people are going to judge you for it. If you can't deal with it, just stfu.

I have Swedes in the family and the only jokes I hear about the Norwegians is the way they speak, the plinky plonky plink plonky etc.

But I was once told that in a certain part of the country, if the people there felt comfortable enough with whom was in their midst, they would make jokes about the person as a sign of acceptance. This was for the simple reason that if someone was not acceptable, then it is plain,they wouldn't be talked to at all. The fact that to make a quip remark shows one is comfortable with the person in their midst as opposed to plain ignoring or treating with suspicion due to an obvious difference. Perhaps the idea behind this, was it was a test to see if the person concerned could be a compatriat or not.

It is/was a British tradition at one time to call black persons chalky, a reverse of what they were, and very common in the armed forces, which has it's own style of humour.

Chris Rock does a bit where he talks about the difference between blacks and "n_____"; and when he says that the media isn't what's fucking things up, it's "n____", when he's at the ATM machine, he isn't looking over his shoulder for Dan Rather, he's looking out for "n_____", I laugh so hard I'm afraid I'll dislodge something. Does this make me a bigot? Stupid? Insensitive?

Hehe yeah I've seen that one, it's pretty hilarious.

Chris Rock :

"There is a war going on between Black people and N________. If Johnny can't read it's Momma's fault, if there ain't no light in the house it's Daddy's fault. N_______ always want want credit for what they're suppose to do" I take care fo my kids, well you're supposed to. I ain't never been in jail, what do you want a cookie ?"

Those are not my words.

But he got down and dirty on the situation, and really called a spade a spade. For that I must recpect him. The fucker laid it on the line.

Nothing else to it except his forthcoming appearance on Oprah. But he said it better than I ever could. I don't need my words, I can just use his. I think he is pretty much on par with Carlin, just a bit younger, Give him a few years to think some more shit up.

Chris Rock made it clear that he was re-defining the word. He pointedly said he was NOT talking about black people but a pattern of behavior that people from ANY race could exhibit. So no that would not make you a bigot, stupid or insensitive.

On the flip side, if you were laughing when Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld) was on stage pointing at black people calling them the N word, my answer would be different.

Level -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 5:34:24 PM)

LadyC, what Richards did wasn't funny, to me, no. What I saw there was someone losing his cool, and trying to strike out at someone, and hide it underneath the label of comedy.

Louve00 -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 5:36:55 PM)

Aaaahaaaaa Level! I heard him telling that skit once, it was a riot.  In fact, I wonder if anyone remembers the show from the 90's called In Living Color.  That show pushed it to the limit alot of times.  I think thats the difference, if its done in taste, or not.  Of course, everyone's idea of tasteful or respectful is different...and you won't always please everyone.  But Chris Rock rocks...and so did Living Color.
