Louve, I loved In Living Color; and yes, they pushed a lot of boundaries.

Now, using them; when they did the Men On Film bits, they were obviously exagerating gay stereotypes. Very funny, but again, does doing that/enjoying it make one bigoted? I say no, but certainly not everyone agreed.

LadyC, what Richards did wasn't funny, to me, no. What I saw there was someone losing his cool, and trying to strike out at someone, and hide it underneath the label of comedy.

Yes, and THAT is what the OP was getting at. Not the jokes themselves but the motives behind the jokes. Some people tell jokes and that is all they are - jokes. But there are a few who tell jokes with a wrong motive. Its usually easy to recognize but sometimes its so subtle its hard to tell.

Louve00 -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 5:45:58 PM)

Agreed.  Alot of people won't agree.  The point, (I believe) hits them either in a personal way...or a way they've been programmed not to accept as acceptable (or enjoyable in any way).  Comedy, when done for the sake of comedy and to make people laugh is always good, especially if it plays on r/l scenarios.  At least to me.  The sarcastic cajoles isn't comedy, those are cheap shots, in the name of comedy. But I happen to feel in order to see life for what it is we have to lighten up and laugh once in a while.  (if its really funny)

This is what I mean!!  I definitely agree!!

People make exceptions for certain behaviour based on their perceptions.

I'd rather not guess intentions and just look at content, as is.

Someone here once said the only test was if it was funny or not but what kind of test is that? Some people you can get to laugh based on their existing views, it's not a real challenge or test in that respect. I'd be surprised if I couldn't get a racist to laugh at a certain person no matter how funny the joke is or isn't.

Level -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 5:51:08 PM)

Agreed, not all "humor" is without malice.

However, even malice-laced humor can be funny, it just depends! And I'm the first to admit, I have a nasty, fucked up sense of humor [:D] , but I can also say, I don't wish to hurt anyone with it.

Much. [:-]

I believe that about you, Level.  [sm=smile.gif]

Aneirin -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 5:58:21 PM)

A  racist comment can be made, a prejudice can be aired, normally these things aren't right, but when they are hidden within the folds of a joke they become something else; humour, and humour is what many people see, but what inspired the joke.

But then what are we, have we become overly sensitive to what we hear, could it be of those who are usually the butt of the jokes expect the joke and therefore are negative as the teller tells ?

But before our eduction on political correctness from the media, was anyone really bothered about the jokes made, were they hurtful before as is perceived now, or has the education made the feeling caused by the joke  worse or better ?

Are we governed about what is right and what is wrong by the order of entertainment in it's various guises ?

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 6:04:32 PM)

How can people argue stereotyping is wrong if they condone any kind of humour that uses it? Which all this race based humour relies on some kind of stereotyping. People seem to not mind tokenism i.e. get your token black stand up comedian to degrade himself because being black allows him to do this. It's a nonsense because people don't basically see it's the same old shit with another face to it.

The test is really whether the "joke" is dehumanizing or not, it's something people are vary sensitive to, and it's why Blacks can get away with using the "N word", while very few White people can - they use it much the same way we used to use "hoser".

It's just that for the most part, if it is dehumanizing, it isn't funny.

I doubt that about the French. Very funny people, most of the French I've met, and a lot of their media is hilarious. Are you seriously saying that Asterix or Les Volseuses aren't funny?

Is there some sort of rivalry between Norway and Sweden? I'd heard that the Swedish advertising campaign for The Life Of Brian was something along the lines of "A film so funny it's been banned in Norway..."
Yes, but a Frenchman would get very pissed off if you told him that - that's what makes it funny.

As for Swedes and Norwegians, the winters are very long.

Termyn8or -> RE: Racist Jokes ? (6/22/2010 9:08:38 PM)

"Does this make me a bigot? Stupid? Insensitive? "

Two young boys were at a park or something in Poland during somw sort of celebration. They were engaged in a fervent search for a canine with multiple penii.

This was because someone had said they saw a dog with two dicks, Meaning most likely a dope sniffing dog with two cops. Formerley called polizia, and then melizia, from what I heard. And that is not all that reliable because it is reverse phonics.

A Polish, may have been BLONDE Woman got caught in a really bad hailstorm and her car looked like a .......forget it. The guy at the garage said "At this point you might as well blow into the tailpipe and try to pop them out". [in my estimation he might have seen the cost, and was saying to total the car, as possibly each and every body part had been damaged]. I think he was joking, but the dumbass tried it. As she blows and blows and blows her blonde neighbor comes up and asks what's up. After finding out she says "Oh you silly, you hve to roll the windows up first".

How many people have blonde hair ? Isn't blonde hair some sort of thing based on DNA ? Isn't whether you are whatever based on some sort of DNA ? What you are today is based on DNA. Granted, we grow beyond, take control of our lives, but exctly how you are is based on your DNA.

How about marry brunettes, ogle and flirt with blondes, but cheat with redheads ? Isn't hair color somehow related to DNA ? Green eyed Lady, they even wrote a song. Red headed stepchild, I got plenty more but that is not the point.

My Turk joke. If I went to my nextdoor neighbor on whom that joke was based, he would have probable laughed his ass off, and most likely helped me write a few more lines. You see he is not insecure in his position in life, and this has nothing to do with money. He is having big problems and I wish I could help him but it is beyond my abilities right now. He is a good dude. But he is indeed the Turk in the joke that was in the forum for about four hours.

You would just have to meet him to know. Just about certifiable, which is why I won't let them take him away.

Why don't y'all just throw me the worst, nastiest Polok jokes you can find right now. I am so sick of these thin skinned assholes that think ten thousand laws should be passed against insulting them. Fukum.

Know what, ask Shore, have a glimpse of my face. Diseased skin and a very bad eye. Pus and everything. Now tell me that a certain job rerquires you to look good.

Tell me how you lost a five hundred buck an hour porn job because you look too Oriental, even if there is not one drop of Oriental blood in you. Tell me how you get rousted at the airport because you "look" Arabic. Tell me how, as a Black Man you only got stopped once in the drive across Texas, and you never even did 10MPH over the speed limit. Tell me, git up with it.

Now get this straight. If any one of you stupid MFs think that something, anything stops once it is declared illegal I got a hundred years worth of news for you. Discrimination in most public venues is completely outlawed.

But you have to understand what we are fighting. I was here when a bunch of White boys kicked a bunch of Blacks out of a rock concert. That was really uncalled for. I was a little kid when the race riots took place. I was born into this.

Some of us have raised the curtain and changed. You have no fucking idea how I used to be. But now it is different, and within all who fall into my influence, tolerance is the key. Don't worry about what they do, worry about you.

I live to a different standard, so don't worry about me.

Well, there are a lot of comedians, such as; Kat Williams, Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx.....

Strange how Chris Rock, Richard Pryor etc can, as dark toned people, tell jokes using the N word, and everything is fine. Yet if a pale comedian were to do, it would not matter how carefully he trod, or how sympathetically he did it, it just would not work.

Yet the pale one is trying hard to not offend, while the dark one may wilfully be offensive.

Does the person saying something, or their motive for saying something....affect the validity of the statement? I reckon not.

I think not too. A fact remains a fact, and I'm not bothered if it's acknowledgement offends someone. I don't relish causing the offence, but I will not conceal a truth, and I will discuss what I please. Fuck the thought police.

Really? My assumption was that the film and comics I mentioned were deliberately and intentionally funny, rather than having been fiddled with by the translators, a la Monkey. There are a lot of very funny French writers (Voltaire springs to mind for a start, and the first half of The Torture Garden is hilarious and vastly better than the tedious kinky stuff at the end), and I'd suspect that's largely down to the French sense of humour being irreverent and dry.

White comedians DO tell black jokes and some of them do it in a very funny manner. If you check out the ones that are on BET who perform in front of black audiences, you will see that they tell ethnic jokes and are well received by black audiences.  Most urban comdians, whether white or black, tell jokes about other ethnicities and 99% of the time no one cares. I have never seen a white comedian get in front of a predominantly black audience and not bring up a joke about blacks. Its all in how you tell the joke.
