Perhaps I have misread you. I have heard blacks make "cracker" jokes or insults and I am aware that some blacks have committed crimes against individuals just because they are white. Yes, and their brutality is just as unacceptable as any other I have been there both as a kid living in urban housing and as an adult in my profession. i am just trying to point out, splorff, that the scales of history and grievious harm tilt heavily against blacks. I disagree. The jews have suffered dreadfully too, and so have others. The only real difference is the magnitude. Every nation and people have suffered. So, what I am saying, and this may outrage you ... any denigrating "joke" made by a white with reference to a black is ipso facto by virtue of the history of outrage committed against blacks a racist joke. I agree, a denigrating joke is an unpleasant act. But I did not tell a denigrating joke. I sought to show that some racist jokes were not racist at all. I think I succeeded in doing that. Some criticism followed, but I do not accept it is valid. Though I am unhappy if anyone were truly offended, which I doubt. Blacks and Jews have each suffered holocaust and have earned the right to be respected. I do not believe that people have to have suffered holocaust to earn the right to be respected. Surely all should be respected. There is no respect in racist jokes. I believe there is no disrespect in the joke I gave. It is just a pun. White folk do not have such historical credentials. As a GROUP the historic travails of white christians/atheists pale into insignificance. Yes they do, as do the Orientals. History is littered with vile human behaviour. My Celtic ancestors were killed in their thousands by the Romans for daring to defend their families and homes. Male survivors were caged and taken to Rome for sport, to be crucified in arenas, or thrown to lions. The women, cock fodder for the legions. Just recently in the UK a Roman building has been unearthed. It is believed to have been a brothel for Roman soldiers. The victims probably were Celtic women slaves. The skeletons of many tiny babies have been found, all murdered at birth– an inconvenience. All people have suffered at the hands of others in the past. I am not going to carp on endlessly about Romans, or demand victim status, or reparations. It is well to remember the past as some have said, but we must live in the present. For starters my own parents as well as some of my older brothers and sisters lived through Jim Crow. While I was growing up, the KKK was allowed to have "organized cross burnings" right here in my city (what effect do you think that had on young black girl in Mississippi) Today I am generally the lowest paid person on every job I have ever had despite having more experience and more education. There are still organizations right here where I live that won't allow blacks in. There are areas in this town real estate agents won't even show to blacks because we can't live there. Most communities today are racially segregated, as are most churches and the economic differences in those segregated areas are astounding. Even right here on CM I can't count the number of times someone on this site has taken time out of their busy schedule to send me a CMail just to call me a racial slur. I could list instance and after instance of the socioeconomic descrimination that blacks deal with on a routine basis......but I won't. However it is a slap in the face to act like racism is a thing of the past.- Its not. Believe me, its present and accounted for.

I am also angry that nearly 50% of all race hate murders in the UK have white victims. Whites in the UK are 96% of the population. Asians are 3% and so are blacks- 3%. Asians are often said to be model citizens, although this is not entirely true. These facts attest that blacks are grossly over represented as murderers statistically speaking. Is this not racism in its darkest form ? I can post a link to the article if you do not believe me. I fully sympathise with what black people are enduring in the USA. Do you sympathise with what is happening for white people here in the UK ?

As an aside, but with elevance to the OP, leaving the college end of year party on early Friday morning a black friend was assaulted and hurt on her way home along with another friend. The police were called and an ambulance was in attendance, the story told that on crossing the road a gang of girls saw my friends and shouted'' n----r'', the dreaded ''n'' word, they then ran to beat her up. Unfortunately for them they were seen by a passing squad car and were taken into custody. Now assault is one thing, but these people will feel a heavier weight of the law, because the attack was racially motivated, they are racists and will be prosecuted as such and very rightly so. My friends are ok, shook up and bruised, but I understand from my black friend she is used to it, for it has happened before many times, which goes a long way for me to understand the way she is and the sensitivity she has in certain subjects. She was also the black friend who sat with us and heard what is described by the teller as a racist joke, the situation that inspired me to write the OP. I understand now given what happened on Friday morning, racist jokes despite how much a person laughs them off, are plain not funny, and should not be aired in the presence of polite society if the aim is not to harm.
