They wouldn't be a group of people if they didn't have the same or similar characteristics would they?

Perhaps how one person acts could be unrepresentative of a group they belong to or claim to belong to but certain characteristics you see in more than one person from the same group and that is how we form our prejudices. Obviously if you are an outsider looking in your perception could be wrong but equally, as you say, the reverse could also be true. Nothing wrong with being a Romantic.

I live in an area that is slowly being cleaned up, and the only people round here who have a bad word to say about our local force are the scumbags who are making life miserable for ordinary, decent folk. I actually watched the police raid a house a couple of streets away (they found a lot of drugs, apparently). The scum who was arrested was let out on bail, and has been spouting off about 'police abuse' - yet I witnessed him being led from his home in handcuffs, the police officers talking quietly and calmly to him, and putting him in a van. Once in the van, he kicked off big time and was shouting all sorts of abuse, kicking the sides of the van and behaving like the animal he is.

(/snip)

I'm not saying it is the case, but it is possible the police waited until they had the "scum bag" in the van before they started in beating him.

I don't really see the logic in lumping entire groups of people under one umbrella of bias.  ANY groups of people.  Except maybe politicians.

You're right, I'm sure that there are some good cops out there that really do care.

I believe you about the pepper spray, but the guy was on the ground, face down and cuffed, the cop bent over with the can in his hand and sprayed it in the guy's face, then kicked him.  And they were doing this a lot over there at that time, not just that one night to that one guy.

I find it odd that someone would say this. I see police as Civil Servants there to Keep the Piece, I personally have Had quite a few run in's with the law, Some where I was breaking it and I was treated like a criminal, and some where I wasn't breaking it and I was treated like a citizen.

If you've ever had one where you weren't breaking it and you were treated like a criminal, it may not seem so odd to you. I agree with Level that, like all groups, some are good and some are bad. I've lived in several different places in various states and I've always found it depends on where you are. The county I'm from in WV has notoriously corrupt State Police but I wouldn't paint all police everywhere as bad. Nowhere near it. I was arrested once in KY by a state trooper and spent several months incarcerated. That officer was one of the most professional and respectable officers I've ever encountered. It just simply depends.........luci

"I say fuck the police, thats how I treat em...."

Can't stand the mothefuckers and I hope I never have to call on them. Have zero respect and although I have not had the pleasure of being arrested since my college days...I have nothing decent to say about their practices, their laziness, and their overall disregard for the citizens that they are supposed to be serving.

They seem to be only interested in serving and protecting themselves.

Fuck'em.

Chicago has had one of the most corrupt police forces in the nation. I'm not suprised you feel that way.

It's funny how in this thread people come up with a bias based on isolated instances and make that assumption of all cops. For some they assume all are good (that's definitely not the case imo) for some they assume all are bad. There's no all good or all bad of anything. I think because we lack so much control when it comes to law enforcement people tend to overreact to them. Face it, if your doctor sucks you can get a new one, if the cop approaching your car sucks, you're just fucked. But that doesn't mean that there aren't some incredibly dedicated, caring and professional law enforcement in the world. One bad apple just seems to taint the whole bunch and that's unfortunate because they can serve a very important function in society.

In CHicago you have to say you like the police. If you don't they beat the shit out of you.

I've known plenty of good police men.  I am not really in favor of them as an institution, as I am an Anarchist, but that's a rather different topic.  I've been in places with good police departments and i have also lived where I do now where the police are extremely corrupt.  I prefer not to interact with any cops, good or bad, in their official capacity if I can at all avoid it.

The problem as I see it with the law, cops, and the court system is it's total lack of understanding of extenuating circumstances. The law does not justify the law and at least in Virginia many laws only reason for existence is 'to generate revenue' (literally, that's that stated reason for the law). This I cannot abide. That and their training is piss poor and most who are cops are jaded by either their experiences during or before their career. If a public service job is just a job to someone then they no longer need to be there. If it is for any purpose OTHER than to serve the public, they no longer need to be there. End of story.

If all the people for whom it is just a job or who are there for other reasons were terminated we'd have a pretty severe shortage of public servants (of all sorts)

Here's the problem...there are enough incidents, probably on a daily basis of very questionable if not totally illegal conduct on behalf of the Chicago Police Department and yet not one of their own ever come forward to try and remedy the situation. Never does a cop come out to question this behavior or be proactive by testifying against fellow officers. The union could care less about the citizens as their only interest lies in protecting the asshole officers.

So you have 100% of the police force that is willing to lose all credibility and respect of the people that they are sworn to protect by creating an environment that allows law breakers to prosper, flourish and go unabated.

This is why they deserve nothing but scorn.

In the light of this

I agree. Cops, judges, attorneys, politicians are not above the law. EVER. There is nothing worse than one that doesn't follow the law they have sworn to uphold and honor.

I do still think and know that it's true that there are still good cops out there in the world despite the mess that Chicago has going on.

laurell, until cops are willing to come forward to clean up "their" mess there really are no "good cops."

Are there good cops somewhere? Sure. I just haven't met many.
