Sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason. Disliking the police is most often based on personal experiences with them, family experiences and geography. It should not be because you watched a lot of movies or TV. In my case, I hate the NYPD. Why? One big reason is that my female cousin was a street cop in the Bronx and made it up to Lt. She was a very dedicated cop and yet she was harassed every step of the way. It was disgusting the treatment she received and she was a decorated cop. One problem is that so many people just assume that cops are suffering because they see so much horror. Please. I can tell you my last boyfriend, who was an NYPD cop (yes, my cousin warned me never to date a cop but I didn't listen and fell in love) NEVER once fired a gun, nor did his colleagues, never got fired at, never really saw much other than some domestic squabbles. But they use that vision that people have of them to be negative, treat their families like crap and treat their relationships like crap. May of them fall for the power and authority crap and misuse it. It takes a certain type of person to go into the police force and even if they go in with an idealistic vision, it usually gets stamped right out because of the internal corruption. There is no internal monitoring of cop's behaviors. It is the Blue Wall of Brotherhood, I kid you not. I am the first one to say never make sweeping generalizations about a group of people, but since I have been a victim of crime and my family has and we have been treated terribly disrespectfully and not as victims, and I have dated one for many years, I can honestly say that my view is what it is and will not likely change. I agree that a society without policing is bound to be chaotic, but there needs to be an overhaul of the police system. It is a thankless job, I will agree on that and there is also a serious discrepancy in how they are paid. In NYC, cops get paid so much less than in the outer boros, like Long Island. It is actually ridiculous. That fact alone makes the NYPD pretty annoyed and they act accordingly.
