I know this is off topic, but what is up with that? I mean how hard is it to get the little sticker on the right corner of the tag. They even give you a picture to look at if you can't quite grasp the concept of upper right corner. So why do people screw this up? Are they trying to be cute? I just don't get it.

Sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason. Disliking the police is most often based on personal experiences with them, family experiences and geography. It should not be because you watched a lot of movies or TV.

In my case, I hate the NYPD. Why? One big reason is that my female cousin was a street cop in the Bronx and made it up to Lt. She was a very dedicated cop and yet she was harassed every step of the way. It was disgusting the treatment she received and she was a decorated cop.

One problem is that so many people just assume that cops are suffering because they see so much horror. Please. I can tell you my last boyfriend, who was an NYPD cop (yes, my cousin warned me never to date a cop but I didn't listen and fell in love) NEVER once fired a gun, nor did his colleagues, never got fired at, never really saw much other than some domestic squabbles. But they use that vision that people have of them to be negative, treat their families like crap and treat their relationships like crap. May of them fall for the power and authority crap and misuse it.

It takes a certain type of person to go into the police force and even if they go in with an idealistic vision, it usually gets stamped right out because of the internal corruption. There is no internal monitoring of cop's behaviors. It is the Blue Wall of Brotherhood, I kid you not.

I am the first one to say never make sweeping generalizations about a group of people, but since I have been a victim of crime and my family has and we have been treated terribly disrespectfully and not as victims, and I have dated one for many years, I can honestly say that my view is what it is and will not likely change.

I agree that a society without policing is bound to be chaotic, but there needs to be an overhaul of the police system. It is a thankless job, I will agree on that and there is also a serious discrepancy in how they are paid. In NYC, cops get paid so much less than in the outer boros, like Long Island. It is actually ridiculous.

That fact alone makes the NYPD pretty annoyed and they act accordingly.

The problem as I see it with the law, cops, and the court system is it's total lack of understanding of extenuating circumstances. The law does not justify the law and at least in Virginia many laws only reason for existence is 'to generate revenue' (literally, that's that stated reason for the law). This I cannot abide. That and their training is piss poor and most who are cops are jaded by either their experiences during or before their career. If a public service job is just a job to someone then they no longer need to be there. If it is for any purpose OTHER than to serve the public, they no longer need to be there. End of story.

If all the people for whom it is just a job or who are there for other reasons were terminated we'd have a pretty severe shortage of public servants (of all sorts)

That may be, although I doubt it. If the expectation is actually there and enforced you'll have people live up to it. If it's all buddy buddy then it sinks lower and lower. I think of my job in this instance and know that if they were actually given the choice of doing their job or leaving they would do their job. However, it would take it being applied across the board. Going back to cops I'm also of the opinion that were they cleaned up then it would attract a different, better type of person. I wonder how many kids actually want to be cops now as compared to say.. firefighters?

Why blame all cops for the actions of a few? Because the all are supposed to responsible for those few. It is literally their job. Instead, they look the other way.

The blue wall, by itself is enough of a reason to fear and loath cops.

There is one other big reason:

Cops enforce morally wrong laws. Pretty much anything in the vice category counts. They make criminals out of those who have done no harm. Which makes them bad people.

No, it makes YOU "bad people" if you don't go to your local politician and fight against the law. Law enforcement isn't responsible for the law that is passed. The idiot politicians are. Move your soapbox a little to the left.

I have no problem with the local law enforcement. Between work and personal life I have quite a few friends and business acquaintances that are either local city police, sheriff, state trooper.......a couple public defenders and county attorneys and one federal judge.

They are human....some more pleasantly so than others.

there were already more than half a dozen stickers on the plate as it'd carried over from one car to another.  i'd had one cut off previously and had to pay to get another.  i thought if i put it on a corner straight onto the plate it would be harder to cut off.  i didn't realize it was a punishable offense.

Been fighting vice laws for years.

Is it your position that following the law can not be morally wrong?

Of course not, it can be morally wrong, however I think the greater evil is having some expectation that those that are sworn to uphold the law should pick and choose which laws.

Didn't say expect. Violating an oath would be morally questionable. To be in the clear, they'd have to have never become a cop. It's not like someone put a gun to their head. Cops choose to take on the job of enforcing unjust laws.

I don't see how being aware that cops enforce laws that inflict heinous consequences upon those who have harmed no one could be construed as evil. Bad things happen to innocent people, and cops play their part. That means cops harm innocents. Which makes them bad guys. Not as bad as the gestapo, but bad in exactly the same way. Just turned down from 11 to 3.
