Most of the atheists I've met are quite happy for others to believe whatever ridiculous nonsense they want to. It's only when people start insisting that everybody else has to humour their beliefs, or in extreme cases share them, that the trouble starts.

I have to agree. There are many groups like that. The ACLU for instance. And also the "Earth has a fever" crowd for instance. And the political correctness police. And the wealth redistribution crusaders. The "living Constitution" bunch. To name a few.

Right here is part of the problem....Why don't people wave their hands to the ground? Why is it assumed that God is floating around somewhere out in space? It's partly a trained response and it is also very limiting in our perception of God as we should be waving towards our own brains in as that is where we have created our God and our definitions of our version of spirituality.

If you look over there you can se

If you look over there you sell stuff.

You can wave your hands to the ground in fact. Think about it. Go through the iron crystal core in the middle of the earth and then back out the other side, it is still sky ain't it?

I dont get the mud slinging. Individuals live their lives, some more interesting than others, some with more care and whatever else. It all breaks down to the subjective life so to sling mud at someone else for the way they live their life is really silly in my opinion. You dont believe in God, cool. You do? Cool wid dat. Up to you.

You are not better because you dont believe and you arent better because you do. It is individual between you and you. I like how rasta's call it "I and I". I do feel we are all entitled to our opinions and can voice them but in the end it wont be each other we will have to decide anything it will be ourselves.

Why are so many non-Believers/agnostics/and or whatever you want to call yourselves so narrow minded?
I make no secret that I am a "BELIEVER" in the GODDESS/GOD/my CREATOR, 100 times infinity.

I wouldn't call it narrow minded....but there is a case to suggest 'some of them' want to convert you. They want their ideas to take centre stage....and that's fairly standard......we're not all reasonable people with a 'live and let live' take on life....no matter the idea....plenty of examples of people being prepared to kill for ideas. I have no doubt that were certain christians or certain atheists to ever ascend into a dominant position within society...then they would kill those who disagree.

Atheists tend to point to the religious strife a couple of hundred years ago....and that's all very true.....people being hung drawn and quartered...burned alive etc....for daring to hold an opposing view....but then Atheism wasn't prevalent in those days....and if it were they would have done exactly the same thing. And...yeah....some of them will come on and say: "we wouldn't do that because of x...y and...z"....the biggest delusion of them all....that certain people are virtuous and above all of that and they'd use their greater knowledge for the 'benefit of mankind'. Lenin and Trotsky didn't start out on a mission to kill people....but give them 6 months in power and they were merrily running round pointing out that: "discipline is impossible without the use of a gun"....and "crush dissenters unwaveringly".....(or something like that)...same with the French Revolution...which incidentally was supposed to be underpinned by reason....atheists are no different....nothing special in the regard that they're susceptible to deluding themselves in the first instance and resorting to coercion there on in.

You can see it here with the: "it's all nonsense" lines....absolutely no attempt to address exactly why the human species places a high value on religion...and it's what we do that tells the story....and it's that inability and/or unwillingness to accept that people don't have the answers.... that there's no one true way to salvation....that should tell you that were these people to ever gain power then they wouldn't tolerate you.

This is why I loved Bill Maher's "Religulous". Basically he was attacking religious people of all stripes in it, but in the end he said there is no such thing as certaintude of any answer at the end of the day. No one knows

Which is why so many feel that believing something completely irrational is a small price to pay if it promises an eternal reward.

And why many nonbelievers have to advocate sooooo strongly when they have not clue one as to the biggest questions facing humanity.... such as is there a higher power, if there is what does it want from us, are we alone, and what happens after we die....No one knows

Perhaps thats because it isnt one of the biggest questions facing humanity. No matter what the answer it doesnt change a goddamn (pun intended) thing.

You make some very valid points, NorthernGent. But on the flipside religion almost fits the description you gave for atheism.  One of the tough parts about many religions is that they require proselytizing.  From the Christians whose religion openly states that they should "compell" people to convert, right down to Jehovah's Witnessess knocking on doors and making people uncomfortable in their own homes.

And we can pretend the horrors of religion are in the past, but to be honest events such as Jim Jones, David Keresh, the Heaven's Gate massacre (of the 1997 comet hale bop suicides) are still on people's minds. When we look at the things that people have done in the name of organized religion its enough to scare even the most ardent believer.

You state that had atheism been prevalent in those days they would have been the terrorizers of the religious. However, atheism IS pretty prevalent today. I know of no mass suicides from athiest groups. Its a phenomenon that so far has pretty much been theists only.  Factor in suicide bombers, terrorists and holy wars; the majority of these have been justified by belief in a religion.

So as a believer I try to recognize that atheist may be so narrowminded for the same reason people are narrowminded when walking the streets at night.......There is a genuine threat that they feel they need to be cautious of. And belief in God or not, I cannot say I blame them.

You know,Jehovah Witnesses have never made me uncomfortable because I have healthy boundaries... all you have to say is that you would appreciate it if they didn't come to your door anymore, and they will leave you alone in my experience. Never had one bother me after I told them this....

The religious people that bother me are the ones that accost me at the store, telling me I am going to burn in hell, etc... and the Pat Robertson sorts that preach hate.

Your joking right ?  If you think the biggest questions facing humanity are the ones you listed, then I feel sorry for you.

The bigger questions must be how does the world manage to feed itself, or put an end to wars that abound. Not some question about what does God want from us. Even those who believe should be able to spot this.

If you do not see this as a major theme of what it means to be human, our search for meaning... that is fine, but if you want to insult me and ridicule me because I think these are the biggest questions I have seen arise in culture after culture after culture, then I pity you... I pity you for being a condescending jerk....

All questions are valid and to ridicule some over others is lame. There is time to ask all the questions and hopefully if we can help heal any of the major gaps and problems on earth and in ourselves, hopefully we will each do what we can.

I always invite them in and get my Bible. by the time I'm finished they are hurrying to leave and don't come back.  I think its kind of funny.

Your post was way more condescending than I could ever be. lets not forget YOU were the one who stated non believers dont have a clue about whats important. All i did is answer your obnoxious post. If you think your questions about are we alone, are somehow more important than world poverty, you need to look at yourself and stop being so pious.

I agree with you, and I have never knocked anyone for having religious views, nor will I. What isnt valid is Julias stupid assertion that non believers dont have a clue as to whats important in life.

These issues do not have to be separate. We can do like mother Theresa whose search for meaning led her to care for the poor, sick and under-represented people of the world.

So basically you are bashing me because you think I am a believer....

I'm not...

I am forever reminded about something..... we choose to be offended, especially when no offense was intended... and although I did not mean to offend you, you certainly went out of your way to be offensive to me...

I am interested in meanings that people ascribe to their lives, and their beliefs, and the questions that they ask and answer with them... you on the other hand seek to ridicule them as competing with your own...you can have that

I am not posting to you anymore, you are truly a narrow individual when you choose to ridicule the views of others because they don't gel with your own....
