Psychoanalysis of some of the participants in this thread should only lead to more arguments demonstrative of the personality disorder diagnoses in those instances.

Fixed, irrational belief systems, cognitive failures and illogical reasoning, distrust of others and mindless, inflexible devotion and loyalty to displaced sources of authority derived from childhood experiences and immature fixation on self identification with those sources in order to avoid their (parents') displeasure.

One of the things I find to be so interesting about this not so quiet section of the forums is how the people on the edges see thing in terms of absolutes.

One of the things I admired Robert Byrd was his love for the Senate led to his writing a 4 volume history detailing it.

He was a "Constitutional Scholar". It was impossible for the people who serve with him not to notice the copy of the Constitution he always carried with him.

I have not read the entire thread and I am sorry if I am repeating what has already be written.

You're repeating nobody: I'd be surprised if the righties dismissing him as an evil racist because he's a Democrat even knew that.

He was truly a self learned man, he was in elected office before pursuing his law degree... I find that amazing. He loved knowledge, and he read voraciously.

It's the thing I really admire about the bloke: he started off as a racist, but he turned his back on that after he learned better. It'd be nice if a few of the birthers could show that much development, wouldn't it?

"Learning better" about racism is as bogus as rehabilitation for criminals.

I have been wrong about many things in this life...

My father was a racist, and my mom told him if he ever told racist jokes, or used racial epithets around her kids there would be hell to pay. My father grew in the years he was married to her, and he grew as this nation became more integrated. He learned better and did better. My father was raised that people from other ethnic backgrounds were subhuman. His father would show him photos of black people that had been altered to show them as having tails, etc. This is the world that Robert Byrd was born into, and this is the world he was able to transcend.

Tis funny how with most democrats, all it takes is an apology for "mistakes" to be forgiven...as long as you are a democrat.  Be a conservative who dies and if you've renounced anything during your life that you consider a mistake, watch the democrats line up to call you hypocritical, a shrewd manipulator of the public who didn't mean his apology, etc..

Examples?

Edited to add... I am no democrat... so I do not have a dog in this race... but Byrd stood up when no one else would, and he gave me hope that history would record the dissent to the Iraq War. I feel I owe him a great deal for that

"Learning better" about racism is as bogus as rehabilitation for criminals.

They make an effort to rehabilitate criminals elsewhere, you'll find. The Dutch in particular have done very well over that one.
As for the other, would you have said that HP Lovecraft might have got a bit less racist in the decade between publishing The Horror At Red Hook and At The Mountains Of Madness? It's convenient for political arguments to assume that people are incapable of change, and anybody who claimes otherwise is lying through their teeth, but that isn't how reality works, I'm afraid. Just because Andrew MacDonald is still as big a cunt as he was when he wrote the Turner Diaries, doesn't mean everybody else has their mind nailed shut, capisce?

What Julia said. It's hard to shake the feeling that the only form of repentence the GOP has any time for is liberals who changed their mind like that PJ O'Rourke sort, so your giving one party a hard time over that looks a teensy bit one sided. One might almost say prejudiced, come to that.

People change in some respects. I don't believe that their core personality ever does though, and both racism and criminality are core personality issues.

No they're not. "Criminality" isn't even a personality trait in the first place. That's a social thing, not an internal one.
Lovecraft was not growing out of his racism when he died, then? You can demonstrate that this was not the case?

In "my world view" (such as it is) people are neither all good, nor all bad and that doesn't change whether you are a republican or a democrat.

Generally speaking, it isn't the words, it is the actions that follow them.

So are you saying that those born-again evangelicals that are so involved with right-wing politics are actually hypocritical liers since many of those came from lives of drugs, crime, and various forms of sin, which many would say are also core personality issues? Or does your theory only hold up for you if the person in question ends up as a Democrat?

Racism stems from ignorance... it is not a "core personality" trait. Racists are not born, they are created, and they are created by sick societies that tolerate that sort of attitude....

it is like calling people "sand N-word" or "camel jockies" or "gooks".... dehumanization to get people to attack other people... if you do not see that, then you are saying every soldier that bought into stereotypes that their government helped fester is a "racist" that can't change...

Your post reeks of stupidity, and it is not founded in what anthropologists know about the mechanism under which racist ideologies are founded

Let's not turn the man into a saint.

Yes, he renounced the things he did early in his life and accomplished some good things but he was hardly a victim of the circumstances of his upbringing.

Many people grew up in those same circumstances and never became Klan members

He made a conscious decision, which he later regretted, but it was still his decision.
