Well, with the anniversary of Michael Jackson's passing, a magazine here held a poll whether you prefered the King of Pop Michael Jackson or King of Rock, Elvis Presley.

It turned out to be 50/50, so I was just interested to repeat the poll here, and see how it would turn out here. It's forced choice, so even if you like both , you'd have to choose who fits you best. Chances are of course that you like another band/singer a lot better, but choosing from these two, who gets your preference? If you don't like either, well, then don't vote obviously.

For me it's crystal clear, ever since I was a child, my mother embedded into my mind that Michael Jackson was the best singer and dancer there ever was, and I kinda followed her. Plus I'm sure she had a crush on him, before the operations turned out to be too bad around 2000 or so. With English as my third language I could already sing the words to Heal the World at age 7 or 8 or so without even knowing what they meant.

I'm an old fart that grew up on Elvis. By the time MJ came along music was already taking a turn for the worse. Admittedly, Jacksons music was better than most of what was being played at the time, but in my opinion it doesn't even come close to being in competition with Elvis.

I liked Michael Jackson. I think he was a phenomenal performer. I think his other issues really made him a bit of a creep.

I grew up listening to Elvis. At a time when rock and roll or anything suggestive or progressive was really frowned upon, Elvis paved the way for everyone after him, including MJ.

Elvis was the King of Rock, MJ was the King of Pop.

They both were phenomenally talented, multi-faceted musicians, performers, & entertainers.  I can't "prefer" one over the other, it's like choosing a hot fudge sundae or a butter pecan sundae, whatever I'm in the mood for at that time, lol.

I mean, if I HAD to......it would be Elvis, but only by a tiny margin, and not in any way because I think he was "better" than MJ.  It's just the genre of music I would drift toward.

Elvis's music made much more sense to me whereas Michael's music just seemed like noise. Don't misunderstand me... both were very good at what they did; probably the best in their genres. I'm basing my vote strictly on the music they each wrote, not the artist.

Elvis - 1, Michael - 0

Elvis had the gyrating pelvis during the time when such public displays were thought to be rude, crude, and obnoxious.

Elvis - 2 / Michael -2

In Moonwalker MJ transformed into a car, a space ship, a robot and a black man. No Elvis movie could top that, imho.

So

Elvis 2 - MJ 4

Well, I think is what it boils down to. Both were revolutionary artists in their own. Elvis revolutionized performance the first time, Michael rode on the upcoming popularity of MTV and revolutionized video clips, and world tour shows. So I don't think you can say one was better than the other (also hard to compare different time periods), just which type of music suits you more.

To me, Michael was the Jesus of our time though. Already famous and destined as a child for greatness, then he gained amazing popularity, used that popularity for a "message of peace", then we turned against the messenger of peace and did a lot of nasty stuff which we might as well not have done to such a nice person, then they die, and after their death, their message all of a sudden springs back to life, and the adversaries once again become the followers.

I discovered this parallel during a shroom trip though, just to explain you the state in which I believed this to be true ;-)

As long as we're going with Michael's filmed attributes, let's not forget about this one... "Captain Eo"...

Elvis -2 / Michael - -2

(Yes, I'm giving -10 points for that waste of celluloid, just mho)

:-D

Michael Jackson, Was friends with and inspired by Marcel Marceau, Now depending on how you feel that could be a point either direction.

I think Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are close but in the end Michael was a better dancer and a better showman.

No "King Of Strange" choice? Michael wins that hands down.
Elvis was amazing until he went into movies.

Good point. I generally don't like Elvis's movies because I thought they were a bit... well... like "Captain Eo," only lower tech. :-D

Weird how you immediately linked him to Marcel. Michael made Marcel one of the most immortal unknown celebrities. For those who don't knnow Marcel Marceau, he was the mime player that "invented" the moonwalk.
