Anyone can read "The New Colossus" and see that she considered the Statue to be more than a commemoration of the Declaration.

Too bad France didnt.

Maybe they should have asked for the statue back when you folks were throwing histrionic shitfits about "freedom fries" back in '04, then.

A HELL of a plan it is!

Posing quotes from Obama perfectly illustrates "stupid stuff". Glad you are coming around to seeing it that way too. The stupidity would be someone supporting the continuation of an Administration who can be quoted directly from his campaign rhetoric to document his failures to produce any of the stated objectives.

Or tell me, with zero expectation of response from you or any Obamapoligist, how does today's campaign speech (since there was no detailed Bill presented) as read off an obviously VERY slow TelePrompTer, distinguish itself from the prior Administration's position on the same exact issue? Another Bush policy being championed by CHRIST.

BTW - Nice timing too - do you think it wasn't a deliberate attempt to distract from yet another troubling employment report which came out today, July 1st, in the administration's previously labeled "Summer of Recovery".

It was agreed that in a joint effort, the people of the United States were to build the base, and the French people were responsible for the statue and its assembly in the States.[19] In France, public donations, various forms of entertainment including notably performances of La liberté éclairant le monde (Liberty enlightening the world) by soon-to-be famous composer Charles Gounod at Paris Opera[20], and a charitable lottery were among the methods used to raise the 2,250,000 francs ($250,000).[21] In the United States, benefit theatrical events, art exhibitions, auctions and prize fights assisted in providing needed funds.

She is best known for "The New Colossus", a sonnet written in 1883; its lines appear on a bronze plaque in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty[1] in 1912. The sonnet was solicited by William Maxwell Evarts as a donation to an auction, conducted by the "Art Loan Fund Exhibition in Aid of the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund for the Statue of Liberty" to raise funds to build the pedestal.[2][3]

Wiki is definitive, though reality often proves inaccurate.

Anytime someone has nothing more than this for people to bitch about, things must be going well.

The most ridiculous thing is, there is ample things to complain about, I mean we have some really really big stuff to complain about... I have to wonder why he isn't going for the more obvious stuff (unemployment, destroyed gulf region, two wars, etc etc etc)

Because Obamas incompetence in those areas is already well documented and is highlighted by his need to resort to embellishment of history to try and sell what will be another failure of his.

You want to research how the statue was paid for.  I am about to stamp a big red F on your test paper.

We should take every U.S. town named LaFayette and rename it Falwellville.

It will give Republicans something semi-constructive to do.

You might want to read a little before you grade papers. The statue was a gift.

Amazing what a simple search for 'History of the Statue of Liberty' turns up.

"Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture with the year 1876 in mind for completion, to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The Statue was a joint effort between America and France and it was agreed upon that the American people were to build the pedestal, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly here in the United States. However, lack of funds was a problem on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In France, public fees, various forms of entertainment, and a lottery were among the methods used to raise funds. In the United States, benefit theatrical events, art exhibitions, auctions and prize fights assisted in providing needed funds."

Source Here!

So yes, it would be quite accurate to say, Emma Lazarus, could have done, what she did in history. If you believe otherwise, it is up to you, to come up with the burdern of evidence!

WTF ....do we get a link, clue or do you just want us to read your mind?
its bad enough when you just post something dumb but when you want us to work for the privilege of understanding what you are babbling about , I don't care enough.

Youre Canadian. Who cares. You obviously didnt care enough to listen to his speech, or if you did are clueless as to the history of the Statue of Liberty. I would hope that the level of education amongst Americans is high enough that they dont need to be spoon fed.

Sorry, but Canadian or not, she's right. WTF are you on about now?

Really doesn't matter what the French intention was in 1886. The history of mass immigration overtook the original meaning and redefined it to what we accept today, and that is Emma Lazarus' poetic vision of a nation of immigrants escaping persecution and poverty.

So, sucks to cling to some French gesture that was made 120 years ago and long since has been overshadowed by Emma's more powerful and meaningful image.
