Status: offline 		Goin to the mountaintop on the 11th!  Goin' up Mt. Blanca, 10,000 to 12,000 ft.  Never been to CO or been that high in the air without being in an airplane.  I'll be walking up the side of the mountain with a backpack on my back.  I've been working out every day and just curious about any tips acclimating to the elevation and stuff.  I can't wait!  I'm VERY excited!  I've been looking forward to this all summer!

Status: offline 		Anybody know anything about Mt. Blanca?  What about animals?  Anyone got bear experiences?  We were discussing this in class, heard some pretty funny bear stories.  My professor has been telling us stuff in class, of course, but just want to hear stuff from people that have been there or that live there.  Thanks!

Status: offline 		Sorry... I live in Denver, but I am not a native and I don't know much about anything outside the metro area.

I can tell you we have been having a very hot dry summer here so I'd recommend lots of extra water. And yes, please do be careful. Fire danger is running a bit high. Does every year at this time.

Status: offline 		So, what was it like when you moved there?  Did you have any trouble getting acclimated?  Did you notice a difference in O2 levels?

I used to go to colorado for vacation every year and camp in the mountains. Yes you notice a difference when you are expending energy. I was an avid runner then. I would plan on being tired the first day, but you get acclimated to it pretty easily unless you have breathing issues, my sister never did and she is asthmatic. That's all I know!

Status: offline 		WE flew into to Denver... mile high city.. not to bad... I could breath and I was a smoker then...so I smoked.

We drove up to Breckenridge..... 9700 feet... beautiful. I was walking down the street, lit a cigarette took a hot...then another... then had to stop and lean against the building. I thought I was gonna pass out.

A woman walk by me and says, "you can't smoke and walk up here"... I said," you can't"....she said..." well, you can....but you can't"

Status: offline 		I will not be smoking and haven't for a few weeks now.  I still want one sometimes, but I'm not going there.  I do have asthma, but I've been working out aerobically every day for over an hour plus taking hikes into town.  And I'm talking to the Dr. on this.  So, I think I"m gonna be good, but I'm expecting to feel out of breath.  I'm gonna do it, though!  I might not have air, but I got spunk!

Status: offline 		You will need to pace yourself.  As MsBetty says, make sure you have water.  And make sure you are with a group.

I've not heard of it, but it is a fourteener.  I live in the Denver area flatlands.

Another suggestion is to recover afterward by a prolonged smooch session with a genuine Colorado man.  Just a thought.

Start taking an iron supplement. 

Ummm. . . how much have you walked around with your backpack loaded?  You should be doing some of this to insure comfort and fit.

Boyscout stove!  WOOT! 

Sunscreen. . .  do NOT forget your ears. 

Two sticks to smack together to keep the bears away.

Colorado is a beautiful place to visit. I have visited many times and continue to return when I am able to as I love to Ski. The Rockies are great for this. I did notice a bit of difference in my ability to get from point A to Point B as fast and surefooted as I had thought I would for about 1 ½ days. I felt at times a bit like I was not as surefooted as I tend to be. Then I awoke one morning and just like that I was acclimated. After those very long 1 ½ days I was finally able to begin Skiing like a pro. So if this old man can brave those higher altitudes then you will have NO problem. I am sure. Enjoy your journey that you have looked forward to in a most beautiful majestic place here on Earth. Colorado!

Status: offline 		The only advice I can give you is from when I first moved to Colorado Springs and that was some time ago.  At the time, I was pregnant, so you may not have the issues that I did.

Even though you are getting yourself ready physically, don't be surprised if you can't do quite as much as you would expect.  You may need more resting periods than you thought.  Due to the altitude, your body will react to the thinner oxygen.  On top of that, you're hiking.  Stop when you need to or you'll get dizzy.

Depending on where you're coming from, you may also expect the air to be a bit drier there than you're used to.  Along with the water, you may want to think about extra tissues.  I got nose bleeds the first week or so that I had moved there.

Status: offline 		Just curious...are you going to the very top (over 14,000 ft.) or just to Lake Como (over 11,000 ft.)? And are you doing an overnighter or do you plan on trying to go up and back in one day? Either way, those elevations will probably still be pretty chilly so dress in layers and make sure you take clothes for warmth. I hope you are taking an emergency kit as well. Fire building material, at least light weight rain gear for those sudden thunderstorms, a space blancket or two, etc. Sounds like you are going in a group. At least one or two in the group should take water purification and/or filtering equipment. It is light weight and can be a life saver if water runs short for any reason. If you take water filteration equipment make sure it is rated for filtering out all the little nasties like giardia (sp?). I think it has to be able to filter down to one micron if memory serves right.

If you are worried about bears in the area just make sure you make a lot of noise as you travel along. Talk, whistle, kick rocks etc. Spending the night and worried about bears? Make sure you keep any foods well away from the sleeping area, preferable hung high in a tree. Another little trick is to take amonia with you and splash a little of it in spots around the perimeter of your camp. The bears will smell the amonia and think the biggest, baddest bear in the area has marked his territory.

When I hike I like using a walking stick (or two). They actually can help climb in steeper sections, and help maintain balance on technical areas like rock slides and stream crossings.

Is anyone in the group first aid certified? If not you might try taking a quick Red Cross first aid class if any are readily available.

Other than that, be safe, have fun, and take pictures!
