Oops!  Now how did that happen?  This was not meant as a reply to sappatoti.  It was meant as a general comment.  And by the way, tawkin suthrun is not ignernt.  Using 'your' where 'you're' belonged...now THAS ingernt.

Those who are capable of using their language competently will always be looking at one another over the heads of those who aren't. You may rationalize your incompetence or slovenliness however you will but that's the way it is.  Slack for English as second language folks.  Great admiration for the ones who handle it well.  But inability to write is linked by many with inability to think.  Nowumsain? lol

Were these three consecutive sentence fragments a subtle attempt to be ironic?

Which is why I never attack anyone on grammar or usage... that would be like throwing a boulder in a glass house[:D]

Hehe exactly. I have a fairly good grasp of grammar but if I'm not in an academic mindset I tend to type the way I talk or think.

Besides, sometimes it's more eloquent to break the rules.

juliaoceania -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 9:21:01 AM)

I am an old broad that has been forced into the txting age because I associate with txting young people. Until a year ago I did not even have a phone plan that included txting. I actually like txting... I like thinking about how I can say stuff in 180 characters or less... it can be challenging to shorthand things in a way that still gets the point across... and it is kinda fun.

I txt my friends these days instead of calling them...

Hah same here, any information I need to convey is sent through text, phone calls are strictly for long conversations.

I used to be really annoyed with text speak in text messages but it's really just a form of shorthand. I'll type "ppl" instead of "people" but I don't use "ne1" because including the numeral actually makes it take longer for me.

~FR

People who post or respond to posts that misspell Foie gras as "Fau Grau".

(Actually spelling and grammar online don't bother me, its casual and shouldn't be nitpicked endlessly. It's when supposedly educated media/journalists screw up that drives me crazy. Also, "irregardless" grates like nails on a chalkboard.)

RDa -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 10:29:48 AM)

Spoken like a crotchety old man...

Hey hey hey, sweet babe.  I AM a crotchety old man.  I have the Gift.  But you miss the point with your goings on about reading books with language play and so on.  People who can think are perfectly capable of playing with language.  Those at the they-their-they're-confusion level are generally not.

I thought that it was there, their, and they're.

VaguelyCurious -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 12:18:32 PM)

This thread has given me an opportunity to ask a question:

Everyone on this forum seems to write 'withdrawl' and 'consentual'-even people whose spelling is otherwise immaculate.

Are those the proper American English spellings? Because in English English they are 'withdrawal' and 'consensual'.

Those two words have been causing me a very low level irritation since I started posting; not a high enough level for me to actually consult an American dictionary, though...

I often exchange emails with professors, because I am a graduate student. Many of them are not very guarded when they write quick notes, and will make usage mistakes, a mis-usage of words that sound alike (otherwise known as homonyms). Now if a person is in a hurry they will write "you're" as "your", etc... this does not mean that the person has no command of language, it could be put down to having to answer 200 emails and you're not thinking about it....

I am just not that hard on people.

Yes, they are. Americans take pride in efficiency. Think of all the keyboards you could save if you learned how to spell correctly!

shallowdeep -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 1:29:41 PM)

On topic:

I guess I do feel some favorable bias toward the posters who seem to pay some attention to such details. But, providing there is interesting content and the mistakes or peculiarities don't make it hard to follow, I'm not particularly irked when I read something with grammatical or spelling mistakes. Even if something is really bad, I can't say I feel irritated by it – I may, however, be inclined to stop reading it. I think the issue is context: I see a message board as an informal environment. So long as the communication is clear and interesting, I'm not going to be bothered by it.

The increasingly lax editing in my newspaper is an entirely different matter.

You noticed!

Now I am off to find ex catharis.

Gah! I misread that. 'Withdrawal' and 'consensual' are the usual American spellings, too. But Webster's does list 'consentual' as valid. Good thing I don't hold making mistakes on message boards against people, I guess... At least no one else caught it first.

Thankyou [:)]

Now I will be irritation-free; if you *know* it's a typo it's not half so irritating.

playfulotter -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 4:07:18 PM)

I dislike to misspell any words but don't care too much about a typo here and there. I do use spell check about 90% of the time. I just don't like when someone types like they are lazy or really don't care what they are typing....no grammar or punctuation at all, text speak, numerous typos...It just to me screams something about their character..Now, of course,  I could be wrong and they are having a bad day but first impressions count as they say. As far as grammar goes I never did well in that class in school and still just type like I speak mostly with most lots of .........."s...added for effect..or is it affect?  hmmmmm

PS..I had to spell check this entry because I always mispell the word "misspell"...
PSS..I have found in the past that a lot of men (judging from unwanted emails) always misspell the word tongue..I think if you see a word enough in print or wherever you should learn how to spell it..I am not sure about women as I don't get too many emails from them... ..I just always find this typo weird..I can't even say right now how they spell it but it is always the same way!  jeez!

Tantriqu -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 4:09:24 PM)

Eyerolls for 'a dominate woman'

I R a dominant.
Adjectival phrase, not a verb! Argh!!!!
