On second thought, I got a million of 'em!
Write about your forebearers, not 'forbears' [unless you're a tetrad of fat hairy gay guys]
Say 'affect me', not 'effect me' or 'impact me'. Say 'skim' not 'scan' when you're reading quickly.
[:@]
Say 'liberry' or 'tagger' for library and tiger, or 'touch base with you,' and I'll break your nose.

But then, I have trouble with Italian words: cappuccino and broccoli. We all have our pecadilloes!

FR

It's "I COULDN'T care less". Not "could care less". Not sure why, but that irritates me.

Also, if I'm ffffriends with the spelling-challenged person, then it doesn't bother me, if I don't like them, then I add it to their list of sins.

Hopefully this isn't a double-post, my pc is acting stewpid.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 4:50:18 PM)

ha Level, that is one of my biguns too.  If you care as little as is possible, you couldn't care less. If you could care less, well, you could care less.

DomMeinCT -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 4:55:17 PM)

This is a casual message board, so typos and grammar errors don't really bug me (although I like to tease about some of them in my journal).

One "word" does irritate without exception: irregardless - hurts to type that, let alone read it or hear it. [8|]

Oh that irritates me too.

So does "conversate" and "I'm a dominate" and people who write "there fore" as two words.

ETA - to defend "conversate" I will say that just because it gets on my nerves doesn't mean it's inherently wrong. The dictionary is a record of language as it evolves, not simply a prescriptive rulebook.

The Spanish second person formal "usted" derives from "vuestra merced" ("your mercy" - comparable to "your honor" used in English) which then went vuesarced -> vusarced -> vusted -> usted. Language evolves, and 100 years from now I'm nearly certain "conversate" will be in the dictionary, and the pattern will homogenize into -ate/-ation endings.

Think of a little Yiddish comic back in the thirties--his shoulders up around his ears, his palms turned out.  "I could care less?"  Somehow this got shifted into mainstream without the question mark.  It's an interesting shift.

RDa -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 5:01:25 PM)

Damn!  I'm going to have to start looking at these things before I mash the OK button.

Oh god I hate "conversate". I also hate it when people say "Then she goes" instead of saying "Then she said". Shudder.

Oh I'm really bad with this one. I use "like" instead. "I was like, no way, and she was like, yeah way."

LadyPact -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 5:11:01 PM)

My personal one is "holla back".

I don't care how popular it was in music.  I can't stand it.

When I was a teen, mom threatened my life over "and then she goes" and "then she was like".

Ahhh the good old days!

lol..well, it still beats the "said" thing. I really can't help it I have a horrible habit of correcting people when they do that. Yes, even him. [;)]. He is getting better..

Hehe my dad would always interrupt me.

"Edith and me were..."
"Edith and I."
"Sigh. Fine. Edith and I were...you know what, never mind. I forgot what I was going to say."

ETA - in my dad's defense, it worked. By the time I got to university and took English with supertastically strict and scary Sister Marcy I was able to laugh with her at constructions like "they gave the job to John and I."

Sister Marcy. She was so win.

Hello Folks,

In having a conversation with a friend, we were talk about grammar, spelling, etc.  In reading a post, what irks you the most, a spelling error done on purpose, ie, "prolly";  What word always sticks out for you?

How does a person's use of grammar and spelling affect your view of the person, and the post?  Or does it?  I was told once long ago, all we have are words on the net, so it's important to attempt to try to get it right.

I'm curious if I am the only person that gets irked when reading posts.

Elizabeth

I get irked by pretentious blokes who fail to think outside the United States of America's brain.  Pity the poor chap from Russia or Germany who dares converse on the web without using proper English language, sentence structure and grammar.

Wissen Sie, was ich bedeute?  Vermutlich nicht!

Where is William Safire when you need him.  *sniffs  I miss him!

Regards,
dovie

ps. all are welcome to correct my grammar ending with (ps)[8|]

laurell3 -> RE: Strunk & White (7/8/2010 7:10:45 PM)

What really bugs me isn't spelling or grammar as much as the wall of text without paragraphs or rational sentences. I would guess just from the comments I have seen over the years that 50% of the people here don't read wall of text posts that are formatted appropriately, I can't imagine how high it is for those that aren't.

Hello again,

Thanks for all your thoughts.   Which makes me wonder, when and why have we lowered our standards.   As far as wrong word usage, one that gets me is "accept and except".  Grrrr.  I think everyone has on occasion had a typo or two, yet, there are those that continually do it on purpose.   A common reason I have heard is "I'm dyslexic"; I was unaware of how many people suffered from dyslexia.   Every time that is said, I want to respond....you ever hear of ..spell check?   grammar check?  Or is it just no one really cares.  Scary thought, sad too, to think of how many people are either just too lazy or unconcerned to bother to try to get it right.

Yeah, my little snarkling is sitting on my shoulder with the angel bound and gagged and the devil telling him to do it for the lulz, but this is the main issue I have with posts like this.

The nun I mentioned earlier, Sister Marcy, had impeccable grammar, as far as I could tell. I didn't mind her slashing my papers with red pen because she really knew what she was talking about.

I have never seen a rant about grammar on the internet that was grammatically flawless. I'm sure I missed a few things in my redtexting, even. But I think the point's well made. Something about not laying in bed smoking weed naked if you live in glass houses. Or something.
