Hi,

Having raised children who moved in and out of pickiness (finally they are all normal eaters, though also starving teenage athletes, so they'll eat anything), I'm wondering if you could try fruit.

I always substituted fresh fruit for veggies when the kids were going through one of those phases. As far as I'm concerned, they are nearly equivalent. What kind of fruit does he like?

It does sound like he's in the fast food fried food mode. If you want change, you will have to cook for him. He's conditioned to greasy restaurant food. Maybe show him some recipes and ask him which sounds most appealing?

It sounds like a dog food routine.

Some people enjoy that.

Honestly, if this angers you so much, sit him down and tell him either he has to give a new dish an honest try every week, or you're moving on.

If he ate at my house a week- he would RUN into your arms with oomph and zest and be jubiliant to be in your loving arms as he gazes into your pretty eyes and says-  "I love you- FOREVER".

I have had the same problem with my bf.  When we moved in together he and his roommates were surviving off anything they could order into the apartment without having to leave (they are all hard core World of Warcraft players, and no, I dont play at all), with the occasional trip to Subway if they were out and about doing things.  Not only was all the take out unhealthy, it was majorly expensive.  It costs a whole lot more to have  food delivered than it does to buy something and make it at home.  Now, my guy is a frugal lil bastard, just lazy as all git.  So when I said that I would start cooking they were all for it.  I just have one rule in the kitchen:

What I make is what's for dinner.  If you don't like it/won't eat it, you have two options.  You can go without, or you can make something yourself.  But if I make dinner there is NO ORDERING OUT.  This was, infact, partially the same thing I did when my daughter began eating real food.  What I made was what I made and there wasn't going to be anything else.  Stomach it or don't, that's your decision.  In the beginning all he ate was the meat and potatoes (guys...sheesh...), but after some time and some creativity, he'd take a spoonful or two of the veggie I had made to go with it..... or have a small salad on the side (initially drenched in dressing lol).  The point is that you have to have patience when you are trying to introduce anything new to anyone's diet... for anything actually.  I mean if you were going to introduce BDSM into your bedroom with someone who's never done it before, are you really going to start by strapping them to the bed and beating them until they cry?  Not likely to get a repeat performance that way.  I'm not too sure I agree with the withholding of sex idea, that could backfire hard core, but additional sex for attempts he makes wouldn't be a bad thing.  And as for the blindfold idea?  YUM!  I might still have to try that on my bf. Just cuz it sounds hot!!  ;)

I used to eat like that.  Then I turned 30 and went to my doctor one day and he said your cholesterol is high, you are a prediabetic.  If you don't change your diet you will have a heart attack or stroke etc.  Believe me I changed my diet.  The moral of the story is as you get older your body lets you know you can't abuse it like you did when you were younger.

i think its a misunderstanding of what i meant that his taste buds are probably more under-developed than mine. he WILL NOT try things. he really has denyed himself the opportunity to develop and advanced palete when it comes to taste.

You could try the "gourmet" junk food route.

Make fresh salsa (lots of veggie goodness in homemade salsa), and home baked tortilla chips if you're feeling industrious. Tempura is another near junk food item that is easy to make at home.

Filled dumplings, ravioli/potstickers etc., can contain small amounts of veggies pretty easily. As a matter of fact a simple red sauce can "hide" the standard mirepoix with ease.

One thing to try is get him to eat a cilantro leaf without knowing what it is. Some people taste cilantro as a strong soapy flavor.

DesFIP -> RE: Dude, you're 24 and you still only eat chicken strips and fries. (7/12/2010 12:16:59 PM)

I've got a 21 year old who won't eat vegetables. Never has. She eats fruit instead.

But basically you can cook dinner and include sauteed chicken instead with some pasta and some cut up fruit on the side while you eat the broccoli. The 17 year old will eat vegetables only if served with cheese. So toss the veggies with grated parmesan or shredded cheddar.

Traditionally you need to taste things 11 times to develop a taste for them.

However, grate your vegetables and add them to meatloaf, or meatballs. Carrots, zucchini, mushrooms are all good for this. Chop very fine, saute and then add crushed tomatoes with juice and make a red sauce. Pasta salad with very small pieces of vegetables. Casseroles with the same.

January -> RE: Dude, you're 24 and you still only eat chicken strips and fries. (7/12/2010 12:23:40 PM)

DomKen,

I think frying veggies pretty well defeats the purpose. Just like fried calamari is no different than fried chicken, 'cept it's a tiny bit more exotic.

Your salsa idea sounds fabulous, though store bought chips (most people's default) are full of fat and salt. The chips are kind of like fried chicken strips, without the protein.

I assumed the OP was worried about her man's health, as opposed to being a gourmet foodie snob who wasn't chill with a low-brow fried chicken strip diet.

But then again, I could have misunderstood.

you are absolutely right. i could care less about him being into the same exact foods as i am. i have no problem with indulging in unhealthy food every so often. but when its a daily thing, i find it concerning. he exercises daily, takes vitamins, but his diet sucks. its like having a sports car, and washing it weekly, rotating the tires, doing routine engine work, but putting regular petro in the tank when it calls for premium, doing all the work on the car means nothing.

pahunkboy -> RE: Dude, you're 24 and you still only eat chicken strips and fries. (7/12/2010 2:44:49 PM)

-- I was like that for a while.  I started to get stomach problems.   I changed my ways and it all got better.

I am not too concerned about cholesterol.    I am tho concerned about diabetes- and very concerned over obesity.

The bread I buy went up to $3 a loaf.  But i will buy that bread- because it is not HFCS, or white --refined/bleached flour.   Several on the silver boards bake their own breads.

Hello - what about trying different restaurants?  DIfferent types of foods and then making htem at home?  Also, it's really fun to make spring rolls.  He can put what he wants in them, but they are fun to make.  I do that with kids.  It's a good way to play "eat the veggies"

pahunkboy -> RE: Dude, you're 24 and you still only eat chicken strips and fries. (7/12/2010 2:49:15 PM)

Take him grocery shopping when he is hungry?

I think you need to start from somewhere that is approaching acceptability to him. You say he likes chilli. Make him some healthy chilli. Start with chilli con carne. He doesnt need to know you didnt make it with mince- that stuff is full of fat.

Grind up some lean meat. It does not need to be expensive steak. Try shin of beef. Add the chilli's, then add some other chilli's [we call them sweet capsicums here] Use red, green and yellow ones. Explain they are chilli's- he says he like chilli's, dont let him pull out the colourful bits. Dont forget the red kidney beans or it wont be authentic. Well then, now we have a healthy meal he says he likes.

Personally, I think perhaps what you have here is the naughty boy type. He is just doing it because he sees it provokes a response in you. I think maybe he is on to you. He sees you like to be the bossy one. Maybe he wants you to press alittle harder with your dommeliness. Try it a bit, see how he reacts to it.

Maybe you have already found your subby soul mate. And it has lasted a few years already Good luck MA.

And intelligent people don't need to get told twice. Get exercise, give up smoking, limit the alcohol and eat properly. All too often I hear of someone who has had a stroke/heart attack/whatever, then they do something about it. Now it might not be too late at that point, but it makes considerably more sense to do something about it way before we get to that point.

I gave up smoking 18 years ago. i walk and cycle when I can, I like veggies, the garden is full of them. It's just the drink now. I dont do it to an extreme, but I do do it every day. Twice I have given it up for a whole month, but then sleeping is a problem.
