You cannot have a child graduate without learning how to spell, add, subtract, etc........IF this were to become part of required curriculum, they will NOT be able to graduate without it. Gotta pass the test at some point!

Let me know if you need me to clarify it anymore.

And if that day comes, I will home school my child.  I do not think I am being unreasonable when I say that I want to educate my own child as far as sexual education is concerned.

What part of the bolded are you missing here?

If you home school and the subject matter in question is part of required curriculum, and your child cannot pass the test to be given a certificate of graduation..... who is at fault?

Apparently my education is lacking as I am so good at fucking up the quote thingy and I don't care to try and fix it........meh. Damn that parochial school!!!

-Laughs.-  I think we've all had issues with that at one time or another.

Look, I'll respond to this and your post prior to Holly.

I'm not your sister.  I read Harry Potter and I will encourage my children to bury themselves in everything they can get ahold of.  I'm Pagan, so the whole magick thing doesn't bother me so much.  ^_^  I think it is very important for our children to be fully educated sexually, intellectually, emotionally, physically.  I just would like to have the option, as a one day parent, to opt out of someone else teaching my child their particular flavor of sexual education.

I can still teach to a curriculum without veering too far off from my own beliefs.

Why do you assume I'll be puritanical?  Because I don't want someone else teaching my children about sexual education, so I just HAVE to be puritanical?  OH WOW.

If I were a good parent, I'd opt out and teach my child how I feel they need to be taught sexual education.  I'd also supplement everything being taught as far as grammar, history, etc.

I assume that because you seem to view sex education in a different category than anything else taught in schools.

You talk of supplementing other subjects but when it comes to talking about sex you want to be the sole provider.

I would like the option to be the sole provider.  If I choose one day to allow the schools to do it, it's my choice.  I should have the option to do so.

You do have the option.

My question is why you would only exercise that option when it comes to sexual matters?

Yeah, god forbid the education system tread on good christian American family values!!! Those good family values that my parents taught (I had my son just a couple days after my 17th birthday) and those good values that Bristol's momma taught her, and the values that my little sister was taught when my mother (who was afraid to discuss sex with her kids) drug my 14 yo sister off for her abortion...

YAY for parents teaching their kids about sex!!!!!!!!!!!! It's working so well!

So when you are standing at the maternity room window, viewing your grandchild for the first time, are you going to put your arm around your teenage sons shoulders and tell him it is time for a talk?

You want to educate the kid about sexuality? Haul off and do it, but while you are waiting till the time is right (ie till YOU are comfortable) the kid is learning one hell of a lot from his friends.

He needs to hear from YOU first, Dad.

What the hell are you talking about?  First of all, this is the female part of this duo.  Hence the references to Daddy.

Second of all, I plan on educating my children earlier if not right on time with what the school thinks is appropriate.

then lock the kid in a tower and toss him a muffin for breakfast every morning.

You do not have that option to be the sole provider if you are raising a socially functional child. This is what you do seem to understand here. It is out of your hands.

What you CAN do is ensure the kid has the correct information as opposed to the BS they and their friends toss around (ie you can't get a girl pregnant if it is her first time, or if she is on her period, or...or...or...).

It is not YOU that sets the schedule for learning sex ed...nor is it the school that sets the schedule. It is the kids themselves that are calling parents into action. They NEED the information, whether you are ready or not.

that is not what you are conveying here....you want it to be YOUR time, and if that worked, Obamas plan would be moot, as i said.

-Laughs.-  S'all good.

Look, my sister had my niece at nineteen.  The biggest mistake of her life, but she loves her daughter more than life herself.  I watch my niece grow up and I want to give my child the best education possible so that my children do not make the same mistakes my sister made.

I just don't think it's the school's responsibility to educate my child on sexual education.  Sorry?

Because I don't believe it to be the government's place to educate my child on sexual matters.

So you're blaming your parents for your mistakes?  Wow.  Talk about not taking responsibility for yourself.  I'm sure Bristol Palin doesn't blame her mother for having sex or getting pregnant.

Are you really this dense or are you just pretending to be at some lame attempt at making a point? Seriously.

My point is..........just to clarify in case you really are as dense as your question belies... is that IF I was taught more in school, the parents that don't, for whatever reason, educate their children properly like my parents.....I and many others, might have had the knowledge to avoid getting pregnant. Others might avoid STD's. Yet others something else.

Which has been the point of most rational people on this thread.

Edited to add.......And yes, I did take responsibility........even when my mother tried to get me to abort my son so that I wouldn't have to.

hell...i am STILL waiting for the birds-and-the-bees talk from my mother.

I went to a strict catholic school and i kid you not...half the female population was pregnant upon graduation. We had sex ed in our senior year. It was a joke, obviously.

Someone mentioned the school teaching bodily functions such as digestion, etc. Sex is a body function. It is physical (Did i just compare sex to taking a dump? Damn if i didn't!) but it is also emotional as well.

What the school cannot teach the kids are the emotional issues of sex. That is the job of his dad and myself. It involves morality, and spirituality if you are so inclined. I really think the physical information has to be intermingled with the emotional aspects to make sure sex is more to them than just a physical act.

I had it multiple times.  I also sat through my sister giving me the talk.  I had it at school in fifth grade and then again at tenth.

So did your parents opt out?  Did they have the option to opt out?  Did the school have a sex ed program?

If the school didn't have a sex ed program, they should have had one for people like you, but they should also have the option for people like me to opt out.  ^_^  End of story.

LaTigresse -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/15/2010 9:15:43 AM)

You are arguing in circles.

First you state that it should be the parents prerogative/option (I will go out on a limb and suggest even responsibility) as to how the child learns about sex. BUT.....then you question if I, an adult that used myself as an example of a parent not taking on that responsibility and a school not teaching it, am trying to suggest that I am refusing my own personal responsibility when I was a child that got pregnant. Insinuating that I am horribly blaming my parents for my lack of knowledge and the repercussions of it.

So, I ask.........where is the line between parental responsibility and the child's responsibility in this instance?

Yeahhhhhhhh, I am all for a lot more, poorly educated and socially inept, people walking around.

HEY... LaT... I homeschooled MY kids. A large percentage of individuals who choose to homeschool are actually very well educated and -far- from socially inept. It is also important to note that there are -just- as many poorly educated and socially inept individuals -in- public schools who will continue to be poorly educated and socially inept... and, unfortunately, there are poorly educated and socially inept people among those who -teach- at public (and private) schools as well... so, in the end, the best defense is a good offense. Know what your kids are being taught, and teach them at home when what you want them to know isn't being covered in the way you want by the school they're being sent to.

There was always something enticing about girls in a catholic school. Maybe it was the uniforms they wore. Or maybe the uniforms, their devilish eyes, and that whole Virgin Mary thing? [;)]

Oooo, sorry Holly. Can't resist. Sometimes taking a dump is emotional and maybe for some even spiritual. Depends on the relief quotient I think.

This whole debate has an undercurrent of parental fear maybe about losing control of the kids by allowing the State to poke around in that most private of arenas. Curious that the AsmodaisSin couple have not been able to articulate specifically what they are afraid of.
