Sadly its been more like 30 years ago for me. You'd think in almost 20 years things would have advanced far enough that girls could know that boys have penises and vice versa.

Yeah...no. we only got the info about our own parts. It wasn't until I moved to Philly a couple of years later did I get the government updated version. Don't matter though...like the joke in such poor taste...

"What's a southern 'virgin'?...'at's a 6 year old that c'n run fast!"

Sadly, many of us learned long before the government got involved what that damned sexual process was.

What is really disengenuous about this thread and the Fox News article is that the focus is on something Obama said in 2007. The same issue was raised during the campaign. This is just a rehash attempt to suggest in another fashion that Obama is an "evil one" and "not one of us." Beware the foreign fellow's pitchforks. IMO this is a bullshit thread.

AsmodaisSin -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 1:30:22 PM)

When I was fifth grade, they segregated both the boys and the girls and they gave us the whole shabang.  This was in Texas.  They told us what was happening to our bodies, what our parts were called in sterile, scientific words, explained reproduction in pretty decent detail, and sent us home with pads.

My niece grew up around homosexuals.  She understands what they are and at eleven, knows that calling "Aunt Roxanne" is acceptable.

Unfortunately, I think that until parents are more open and honest with their children, people are going to push these programs further and further.  I do not think the government should be raising our children and I would opt my child out of that education because I would want to educate them my own way.  She may not be my child, but I helped raise my niece, we educated her at an early age that only Mommy, Grandma and Aunt Melly were allowed to touch her in any way below the belt.  Even my father, who has been an integral part of her life(even stepped in when the asshole who was with my sister at the time bailed on numerous occasions, and played the male figure) does not see her naked or go near her when she's taking a shower or bath.  I don't want some crazy wacko going in to teach my children or my niece about sexual education.  It just so happens that most of America is uncomfortable talking about being on your period or anything like that.
I still think that if a parent wants to opt out of this education and educate their own children, they should have the option.  From what I've read/seen, they plan on really not telling the parents or giving them a choice.  They are OUR children.  Parents should have a say.

Obama recounted how grade school sex education became a campaign issue during his 2004 senate race against Alan Keyes.

A little earlier than that, vincent, but your remarks are spot on. This is just another attempt to redirect the american focus.

And if the parents fail? What responsibility should they shoulder?

Fail by whose standard?  Yours?  Mine?  The guy down the street?

If the parents fail to impart understanding to prevent abuse, will they take responsibility for that failure?

Who the hell are we to tell someone how to parent their children?  That's a huge assumption on our part.  If someone wants to opt out, they need to have that right to do so.  Plain and simple.  Do you want someone telling YOU that you have NO right to stop your child from experiencing something you want them to experience with you?

I sure as hell wouldn't allow that to happen.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 1:55:12 PM)

We already tell our parents how to parent. Look at gun laws, look at education requirements and the fact that parents can be arrested for not sending their children to school (truancy laws), look at drug laws, internet access and porn laws.

Just who do you think you are kidding by screaming about not telling parents how to parent?

Again, I think they should able to opt out of this particular program.  Parents should be allowed to have that option.  Enough said.

LaTigresse -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 1:57:23 PM)

Okay, let's look at this from a different angle. If a parent only wants to feed their child one meal a day.....who is responsible when that child has severe health issues or starves to death?

I mean, come on, it's their kid, their responsibility, they should be allowed to parent that kid ANY WAY THEY WANT right?!?!?

Neglecting your child and their health is a little different from having the option to opt out of a sex-ed program because you feel that it's your parental duty to do it on your own time.  I mean really.  Are we seriously trying to compare these things?

Ah yeah. Because I gotta tell ya, most people I know that were sexually abused or molested as a child would have preferred missing a meal now and then to what they did suffer.

I don't see neglecting their mental well being via education as any less a crime than neglecting their nutritional health.

And IF parents take that responsibility, i am all for parents being held to the responsibilty of their actions. I do NOT have the faith that you seem to have in all parents doing what is best for their children on their own. Denying a child health care based upon the parents religion... another parental right, which is blatantly wrong.

We, as a society, do have a duty to protect children. And if it comes down to insisting parents do, or not do, certain things in order to protect those children, then so be it.

LaTigresse -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 2:02:35 PM)

AND.........IF indeed a parent is doing their job with this type of education, well then the worst crime the school will be committing will be redundancy........for shame for shame!!

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 2:04:01 PM)

Exactly! Its a crime to empower our children and teach them proper words and behaviors among adults.

No it's not. It's the exact same thing. It's a parent neglecting to inform their child or empower their child to being safe and healthy if they just don't "get around to it".

I'd rather be sure someone is going to appropriately educate a child about their right to their own bodies, than risk a single child not knowing and the worst happening.

Because jumping to these extreme concepts is the best way you can defend yourself.  That's brilliant.  Most people do not molest their children.  Most people would probably look at the sex ed program and sigh in relief because they don't have to go through the awkwardness of explaining.

If ever I am a parent, I want the option to opt out.  Plain and simple.  The fact that the school might have the audacity to tell me, as a one day parent, that I have no right to opt out, I will remove my child from the school and go to another place or home school.

AsmodaisSin -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 2:09:05 PM)

I don't understand.  I hear all the time, "It's my body!  You can't tell me what to do with it!" when it comes to abortion, but the moment someone wants to educate their children on sex-ed without the school's involvement, it's neglect.  It's my kid.  Or potential kid.  O_o

Where did I say ANYTHING about parents molesting their children?

You have the legal right to opt out of any government funded education as long as you can prove via testing that you are providing a comparable education at home. Feel free to opt out of math, science, and anything else you find uncomfortable and further handicap your possible child/ren.

If you seriously believe that a child being sexually molested because they were unaware of the facts of sex and had not been empowered by that knowledge to be less horrible than going hungry then I seriously don't know what to say to you.

Your argument is typical of most closed minded conservatives I've met. You cannot begin to see how silly it is to get your undies wadded over such a none threatening education as proposed yet you would be the first to strike up a lynch mob if a child you loved was abused and hurt in such a way as some unempowered children are.

I am not at all saying that education will stop all abuse, but I believe in giving people all the tools possible to help prevent it.
