Why??? I'm not understanding the purpose for listing them publicly. My mother was on welfare when I was a child because she didn't graduate school and has very few skills and wasn't able to support us. Why should her name have been public knowledge just because she needed help to keep her children from starving?? When my husband died I was on social security to help ends meet because I'm a single parent. If it wasn't for that I would not have been able to supplement my income and raise her in a proper way with at least one parent around to care for her. Why should my name be public because I wanted to be a good mother? The person who came up with that concept is a complete moron as far as I'm concerned.

I don't agree. It's not like they are sex offenders or criminals. People have a right to privacy and there is absolutely no reason for us to know the names of every person the government is helping.

I am not in favor of treating ANYONE who recieves ANY public money this way - but the whole concept does beg to be questioned - what public money are we talking about? WIC? Free lunches to school children? Are we talking about the free lunches and food stamps given to foster parents as part of their reimbursement? BTW, on a personal note, I can remember being in third grade - receiving reduced lunches (a dime for lunch, a nickel for breakfast) while my stepfather was temporarily laid off from his factory job. We still had 'milk break' back then - milk was a nickel, parents were encouraged to send a 'snack' for 'milk break' (and back in those days, the concept of 'healthy snack' had not yet entered into the landscape - just a 'snack') My mother shopped at the bread discount store, and sent us with the individually wrapped cupcakes she bought there for a nickel to a dime a piece. I remember, my snack for later in the day on my breakfast tray, handing the lunch lady my nickel - and her glaring at me and pointedly commenting that people who could not afford to feed their 7 children should not be sending them with sweets while her taxes payed for my breakfast. Is there really anyone out there who thinks treating a child - or anyone else - that way, is justified?

It's none of nobodies business, but theirs and the governments, who's getting assistance. I am thinking that the info would be mis-used- used for malicious purposes. PA is pretty strict when one has an over payment. The list would be pretty intense if they ever did publish it.

I receive SSI. Everyone here knows I am bipolar with PTSD. Even with meds, I cannot work. I love my catnaps. Now...if I am listed, I will be plauged with bill collectors. I cannnot pay them all, just 2 for a while. I don't take food stamps though I can get them. do the listing where it counts..child molesters and known habitual crimenials.

No reason for this at all. People have a hard enough time asking for assistance & to know that you'll be publically humiliated by being put on a list will stop those who really need help from applying.

This is just another example of people wanting to feel better about themselves and more powerful by demeaning those who are already flat on the ground. Add public humiliation to poverty. Let's just build some debtor prisons like the good ol' days and lock up all those who for whatever reason can't seem to muster the incentive to go out and flip a burger for a living.

~fast reply~ I contributed a great deal of money into the welfare system for 19 years. I didn't claim anything at all during those years, even when I could have done so. I felt I could get by without that help, so I could leave more for people with a real need. Then I lost my job through redundancy. It was sudden, and the week before Christmas. It pulled the rug from under me. I was depressed, angry, and totally humiliated at having to go through the process of 'signing on' every two weeks to be given a pittance to survive on. I tried and tried to get another job, but couldn't do so. There were no jobs to be had, and I didn't want to leave the area I lived in as I have a very sick parent. I sold my home and my car to stay out of debt. I decided to go back to college to retrain as a teacher. I used the money from my house and my car to partly pay my way through college. I didn't claim any state support to get through college - instead I relied on loans which I'm repaying, with interest. What benefit would there possibly be for the general public knowing I was on welfare for a few months? The only reason I can see is so that vindictive people could mock me, or condescending people could pity me. Believe me, I felt negative enough about myself without others adding to the load. Publishing the details of people on welfare is a shitty idea.

These things are NOT the same as welfare and if you are ignorant enough to think that that is your cross to bear. And as someone who recieves section 8 housing its no ones business unless I tell them. Also public assistance and food stamps are there to benifit low income familes, although the system is not perfect it does serve a purpose. I dont think those families should be publically shamed for needing assistance trust me MANY of them already feel enough shame for it. ETA: Whats next are you going to publicize the children who recieve free or reduced lunches?

I just don't care. I care about my clients giving me correct information so I can do their taxes, but I am bound by confidentiality laws. Considering just how hard it is to even GET SSI or SSD, and how paltry the amount actually is, I think a list of those folks so we can send them stuffs might be nice!

It took me about 3 years to get my SSI. With my Mom, she got it on the first try. My medical records were scattered across the country. Mom's was centralizatized to one doctor. Lizard is on the reduced lunch program and I pay for that so her dad can save funds up in case he gets sick (which he never does, lucky bastard). Let me show you how my budget goes. 763.00 deposit in the bank 120.00 Student loans 50 hospital bill 69.11 Hughes bill 9.95 service charge 15.90 Runescape for me and my daughter 66-108 Bus tickets to get to austin and back. 10.00 Drugs 5.80 Part D 42.22 Curves, though right now I am sicker than a dog 10.00 to 200.00 what Medicare does not cover. (make that $150) Total left over...182.02 Hey I got some money to spend! WRONG! usually when I go to Austin, I order chinese and that is about 34 dollars. Come August, I have to go to Austin again, this time clothes shopping during the tax-free sales. I also need a few new bras (damn bewbage have a mind of their own...) Lets take about the supplies for school. Every jailor...whoops, I mean teacher has a list for every damn class. At least $50 there. PLUS!!!! Dealing with a emo/goth/punk daughter can be hard. Her hair color is hard to describe. Last summer, her hair was blue...I color it black to hide the blue...now she wants it blonde... someone give me a drink, amaretto strait up. But I take it in pieces. Maybe we can go for a strawberry blonde like I am (note to self: color tonight), maybe I can get the supplies cheaper her.. Got to go..I have to clean up my room...for some reason, the metal bookself was blocking off the pathway to the door. surprised Mom did not come in...
