CALGARY — A Calgary mother won’t spend a day in jail for killing her teenage daughter with a head scarf...

The devout Muslim mother claimed Aminat came at her with a knife in her sewing room, where she prayed several times a day. She said she reacted by wrapping the scarf around her daughter’s neck and twice told the girl to put the knife down before the teen lost consciousness.

A knife was found in the room, but the daughter’s fingerprints were not on it.

Nevertheless, the woman was only sentenced to three years probation and required to accept counselling for grief, depression, and anger management, the judge noting that she had had a tough life and that "the events of that morning cannot be seen as a single isolated event.”

What do you think?

The hot weather brings out the worst in people.   Her prayers have not been effective.

My thoughts?

You or one of your buddys will try to imply her religion had something to do with the homicide or with her sentence.

This has a little more on the back ground of the daughter and mother.
very sad all around..I know trying to restrain kids from either attacking themselves or someone else is bloody hard.. Im not gonna second guess the judge.

That this could to made into something about her religion is obviously a thought that occurred to you...

But not to me, or anybody else so far.

If you seriously believe that anybody besides yourself thinks her religion can be made to figure in this, I suspect you're about to learn how unique you are.

Will... not to start any crap...but... you were the one to mention her faith... What difference does her religion make to the story…unless you wanted to make a point of it.

Troubling that the daughter's fingerprints were not on the knife. Makes me wonder. However, the girl's history is a mitigating factor. Also curious why there was no Case Worker visiting the home after the girl was expelled from school. Seems like the mother was left alone to deal with a very trouble teen.

Not as fast as you'd be all over a priest using a string of beads to strangle an altarboy.

No, the article mentioned her faith. Kirata said "Nevertheless, the woman was only sentenced to three years probation and required to accept counselling for grief, depression, and anger management, the judge noting that she had had a tough life and that "the events of that morning cannot be seen as a single isolated event.”

What do you think?"

And that seems mighty light for a murder charge. Something doesn't sound right about it.

truckinslave -> RE: Canada, oh Canada (7/16/2010 9:01:08 PM)

As part of an exercise in MP school, we were told that if we put our partner down (we were doing a hold that put pressure on the carotid) we would get the rest of the hour off. I gave my partner a nice nap. There is apparently, at least with this hold, a looooong time between unconciousness and death.

I've been in fights that involved a lot of adrenaline and emotion, situations that could have been seen, and probably were seen, by both parties, as life-threatening. I never lost control to the point of killing my assailant/arrestee. Two minutes or more of strangulation after unconciousness?

What do I think? I think this was murder.

You miss my point... the very fact that the article posted her faith in the second sentence means it has significance to the article writer... and the fact that he included this part in his post also means it was important. Otherwise why post it?

Her religion must mean something to somebody.. I mean lets face it if it were a Christian woman killing her daughter there would not be a religion mentioned. It would just be woman strangles daughter .

Why jump on Owner59 when he pointed out the obvious?

Butch

I never mentioned her faith. I never said word one about her faith. I just posted the part of the Canada.com story describing the incident as she portrayed it, along with the fact that the knife was found not to have her daughter's fingerprints on it.

The thing that I found difficult to resolve was the degree to which the judge gave consideration to what the mother had been through. I don't rule out giving someone a break on their sentence out of compassion. But a walk? In the face of forensic evidence that contradicts the story she told?

Hence the question I posed, "What do you think?"

Wrong. Its simply a point of information.

Wrong

There were 200 some odd killings in the St Louis area last year... NONE of the stories on the deaths, at least that I've seen, mentioned the religion of the murder or victim.

So don’t give me the crap that her religion meant nothing.

Butch
