You are a reporter writing a story on a mother murdering her daughter. Would their religion be the first thing that popped into your mind and you write it in the first paragraph of your story...unless it had an importance to the story...I think not.
Try reading the story, the mother's religion isn't mentioned until well into the story.

Im stilll waiting to find out why the dumbass post title... most countries have outraged groups protesting a judges ruling on a dead childs killer...what made this special?
Im certainly not buying the "mother kills daughter, how horrendous" angle
She was aquitted of murder, she was found guilty of manslaughter.
What makes this story so special???
As someone mentioned the Karla Holmolka story is much more newsworthy, but didnt even raise a ripple except with Canadians
The Moat story, barely made a blip on the board, I dont even know if there was one response to Lady Ellens post. How many did he kill? how did he die? no interest from anyone outside the UK.

Im asking nicely

I didn't hand pick the story. I don't follow Canadian news. I just happened to come across it and thought of a certain Canadian who is overly fond of offering Americans his endless critiques. I opted out of a snide comment that would have made the connection clear, but I forgot to change the title.

Frankly, I don't know that I would have bothered to post it at all except that I found myself struck by the way the woman's description of the incident and the forensic evidence to the contrary was passed over as if merely an inconsequential detail, remarks by the judge, prosecutor, and others who were quoted omitting even to mention it.

CALGARY — A Calgary mother won’t spend a day in jail for killing her teenage daughter with a head scarf...

The devout Muslim mother claimed Aminat came at her with a knife in her sewing room, where she prayed several times a day. She said she reacted by wrapping the scarf around her daughter’s neck and twice told the girl to put the knife down before the teen lost consciousness.

A knife was found in the room, but the daughter’s fingerprints were not on it.

Nevertheless, the woman was only sentenced to three years probation and required to accept counselling for grief, depression, and anger management, the judge noting that she had had a tough life and that "the events of that morning cannot be seen as a single isolated event.”

What do you think?

K.

I think if someone were strangling me and I had a knife in my hand, the person strangling me might kill me but they are going to have several knife wounds on their body from where I'm stabbing at them. A scarf against a knife? I'm not buying it.

RIP Aminat
