Status: offline 		Well, wouldn't it help him to stay in touch with the "common man?" Well, John Kerry traded in the "Scaramouche" for a much bigger and more expensive boat,...er, Yacht build in Australia.
And at 76' you'd need a crew of six to crew this boat, Capt, First Mate, Engineer, Cook, Hostess/Server, Deck Hand.
Oh, and then there's a small matter of "taxes" as the article explains.

Julia, he's not just a "rich liberal" he's a U.S. Senator.
How many of his constituants have lost their homes in the last year. Do you really think this is a good thing to be doing in this "depression?"

Status: offline 		Hey!!!!! Just like John McCain and many others, he married for money and worked out the lovin' later.

There is something about the smell of old money, and old pussy..........

But pretty much only the rich (or very well to do) can afford to get into national political office.  
It's wrong at that level not at the individual level.

Perhaps not, but it speaks to one.

Popeye's got a good point. Who are these multimillionaires who claim they're suited to represent us and our interests? What does some effete bag of wind who owns a $7,000,000 yacht know about a guy with three kids who lost his job at the factory last winter and doesn't know how he's going to feed those kids when he gets thrown out of his house next month? Who are these fuckers, and what qualifies them to govern us? Other than their money and their social position?

ETA: I'm the first to admit, I've got a particular disdain for Kerry and people like him. I know that not every Senator or Representative is in the same category as that pompous, useless asshole. But there are too damned many of them, and if I lived in his state I would never even consider casting a vote for someone like him.

When 1 out of 7 workers can't find suitable employment (or any employment at all), the technical definition of terms like "recession," "depression," and "recovery" are only relevant to a limited degree. I think Popeye's point stands, and in my opinion it's a damned good one.

Status: offline 		He doesn't represent me. I live in Illinois. He represents people who keep voting for him.

This is what bothers me about term limits. We are asking congress to save us from congress.

How many people pay any attention to what their Representatives do? How many even know their names?

How about phone numbers?, email addresses?

It is easy to blame John Kerry for being a rich guy. If the people of his district or in his case the state don't like him, they can vote him out.

Julia, I'm from Massachusetts origionally.
Many people there go to New Hampshire to buy and register their cars to avoid the high taxes in Massachusetts. Register them at a friend's, family members address etc.
If they get caught they have to go to court, pay steep fines and lose their lisences for 90 days.
But, those people aren't U.S. Senators.
It doesn't matter which "party" the Senator belongs to, doing something like this isn't going to make them popular with the "non-working" people.
John Kerry never did have any grasp of the sense of "Noblise Oblise." (sp?)

I suppose I would agree with you if Kerry was standing in the way of getting aid to the unemployed, for example, but he isn't. He is very progressive when it comes to supporting social programs aimed at the less fortunate, he is also very philanthropic.

I have this view of wealth, how people spend it, etc.... as long as people do not begrudge others, they should have whatever their heart desires...

And believe it or not, he is stimulating the economy and creating jobs with that purchase. A yacht requires staff to run it, etc. I do not feel diminished by other people having wealth. It is when they try to shut the door after them and keep others from getting ahead that I have the problem... such examples would be Newt Gingrich when he wanted to end Pell Grants when he had received one.

I am thinking Kerry has a residence in New Hampshire, why shouldn't he buy his yacht in any place he has a residence when it suits him? Again, I see no problem with this

Kerry is not involved with Mass. taxes, that is a state issue, and he is a federally elected official....
