And you really believe this was the reason for it?

It had nothing to do with Mullah Omar or Bin-Laden's presence in Afghanistan?

I agree that Bush was correct going into Afghanistan, he just hampered coalitions forces with the Iraq issue.

I dont think the files should ever be released while troops are still fighting in the field though, and I have to wonder at just how wikileaks got hold of them.

Did you feel the same about the "pentagon papers" released by daniel elsberg?

Politesub53 -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 4:07:59 PM)

Slightly before my time Thompson, but if they endangered troops still in Vietnam they should not have been released.

Do you think these leaks are oaky if the endanger troops then ?

The pentagon papers were one of the major events that brought about the end of american envolvement in viet nam.
What endangers the troops is being there.
The hue and cry about "endangering the troops is utter bullshit. How does telling the truth about killing civilians endanger the troops? It is not like the opposition does not already know that it is happening.
So I am unclear as to how this "endangers the troops"

Politesub53 -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 4:24:54 PM)

So troops wont be endangered by the Taliban being able to read how they operate then ?

Your assertion they are there just to protect a pipeline does you no credit.

Do you mean to say that in the past 8 years the taliban has not figured out how they operate. From what I have read the taliban seems to be doing a pretty good job of kicking their asses.
I do not believe the pipe line has been built because we are in no position to protect it and neither are our puppets.

Politesub53 -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 4:33:21 PM)

So you think we are staying there incase the Taliban get fed up, and we can build the pipeline then ?

Be logical, if the thing hasnt been built we are hardly there protecting it are we.

No, I believe that the administration (this one and the last one) felt that they could destroy the taliban and install a puppet government and then they would have a secure place to build the pipeline. So far they have neither been able to destroy the taliban nor establish a stable puppet government in afghanistan.

Politesub53 -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 4:40:33 PM)

I dont agree, it would have been far more effective to just to cut a deal with the Taliban. We both know that.

Evidently they were disenchanted with the deal.
Here are but two examples of such.
The u.s. tried to make a deal with columbia for panama to build the canal but the columbians thought the terms were not to their liking so they turned the u.s. down.
Then the u.s. sent the marines.
The u.s. tried to buy california from mexico and when the mexicans said no the us declared war.
It is not like we do not have numerous historical precedents for this sort of thing.

Stow your righteous indignation and just ask yourself if Wikileaks is paid for by Iran.
It ever strike you that some internet sites are there to lead youa round by the nose?
Just because it's anti Uncle Sam does not mean it's true.
I'd take this stuff with a pinch of salt if I were you.

Do you still feel that the pentagon papers were leaked by north viet nam?

Brain -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 7:39:07 PM)

I think it's illegal to make the information secret when it's not really a secret. What I mean is, it never should have been classified in the first place.

Even if they build the pipeline the Taliban will blow it up and the workers constructing it would be in danger obviously.

The other problem is many Afghans get along with the Taliban.

They need to make a deal with them and that's what most experts say needs to be done because the truth is it's just costing too much money and there is a cheaper more effective way to accomplish the mission.

Rule, millions of civilions were killed in world war II. It is a very sad part of war.

Brain -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 7:53:02 PM)

The guy who started the website is British and it has nothing to do with Iran. Nobody has an agenda, they just put on the website what whistleblowers report.

Brain, Maybe the pentagon has a different idea on what information should be classified, and what is not.

Brain -> RE: Top secret files on Afghanistan war reveal hundreds of unreported civilian deaths (7/26/2010 8:02:09 PM)

I just heard on CBC news we were told four Canadians were killed by insurgents but the secret files that were released say that's not true and they were killed by friendly fire. People have a right to know this kind of information.

It's not acceptable to lie to families when people sacrifice their lives. I hope Harper gets questioned about this in the House of Commons during question period.

In case anybody wants to check out the revelations about Afghanistan you can watch this video on the website.

A memo to Brain. There are unreported civilian deaths in every war.

It’s also here. The guy who founded the website said there is evidence of war crimes in this material.
