Every person in the world should know the name Norman Borlaug. Several billion people are alive today because he genetically altered wheat. He almost certainly brought peace to China, India and their neighbors.

Didn't he do rice as well, or is that what he is currently working on.  I think corn as well.

Wouldn't surprise me. Dwarf wheat was what won him the Nobel Peace Prize.

I looked at the website for him.

He was working on transfering the rust immunities that rice has to the other cereal grains.  I was not aware that he had died last year.

Thank you for that statement Ken. It explains alot, I think differently and am totally against genetically altered foods. We are never going to agree on alot of things but my whole being is against people fucking with genetics. And I can explain my reasons for that but it would be metaphorically, most likey related to my profession(s).

There are two possibilities. One is that you don't care and we can do whatever we want, but I think that unlikely. Two, which I think more likely is that you bevieve that human science and all this DNA stuff is part of nature, because as Man is part of nature, Man is allowed to change it.

Many people would call that calling ourselves Gods. Maybe it is, and maybe we are. There are animals out there that could tear us to shreds in seconds, yet we still seem to occupy the top of the food chain. Two different personalities, two different outlooks.

My take on genetic engineering requires a metaphor :

A guy tries to fix his own TV set. Then he brings it in. We find the original problem and his bill might be say $80. but since he wrapped foil around the fuse and blew out a whole bunch of parts, it's $140. Now it is not worth fixing. Who won here ? Everybody lost.

That is my slant on genetic engineering, there has not been enough time and thought put into it and I still assert that they just don't know enough. But it gets done in the persuit of the almighty buck. The fact is, as long as our society operates as it does, this problem cannot be solved. We are now finding out the dawbacks of living in a capitalist society. There comes a point where some win too much and others lose too much. Watch the TV for details.

We need a change in the way business is done, taxation and all that. As long as ADM and their ilk have lobbying money, they'll gladly kill us to get the last dollar we have. That is the true nature of a capitalistic society, is it not ?

We've been modifying the genetics of plants and animals for roughly ten thousand years. Our entire civilization is based on it.

For proof you neeed look no farther than corn. The plant simply cannot exist in the wild. You would be hard pressed to find a plant and say this is 'wild corn' because corn is actually a hybridization of 2 different species of cereal grasses. Neither one looks anything like corn. We know this hybridization was in conjunction with people because corn cannot disperse seeds without human assistance.

Another stunning example is the cabbage. Red cabbage, green cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens and kohlrabi are all the exact same species of plant, Brassica oleracea. We've manipulated the genetics of the plant to produce a huge assortment of food crops which to the unknowing eye would appear to be distinct plants.

Norman Borlaug achieved his major success, dwarf wheat, in the 1960's. It is literally the reason starvation is no longer an issue in India and China. He did his genetic manipulations during that period in the time honored method of selective breeding and hybridization because that was the tools available to him at the time. I'm sure he moved into gene splicing as such techniques became available.

Term,

kids and I suppose some adults like hotdogs and candy.

But then we grow up and like steak and vegies.

I do not mind that some want to stay kids- but I do mind the most of the food supply is crap.

I would like to point out that genetic changes are made everytime people choose to have a child or breed an animal.

that is incredibly interesting. Thank you, Ken. Let me add this from wiki:

Some (notably brussels sprouts and broccoli) contain high levels of sinigrin which may help prevent bowel cancer.

For other edible plants in the family Brassicaceae, see cruciferous vegetables.

Fuck you PA!

Thank gawd for genetically altered plants.  It increases their hardiness and the crop yeilds.

Do you have ANY idea how many people in this world are starving?  Do you?

And fuckers like you make it worse by propagating this shit.

Crop seeds have been refused by starving countries because of this scare of "genetic altering" that you are going on about.  These seeds were freely given humanitarian aid that would have feed untold numbers.

Pick up a dictionary.

Learn what those words mean.

Since humans started agriculture they have been "intentionally altering" their crops.

You are the ass trying to kill millions with your despicable lies.

you do realize that almost every single thing you eat today has been genetically modified in some way thousands of years ago. Until then most of it was inedible..corn, wheat, rice, peppers, potatoes, etc...those nice bright orange carrots you eat? Yeah they used to be white and pretty bitter and lacked the vitamins they have today.

and if you're claiming to not stick anything in your body that isn't to the highest standards....stop drinking that coffee! Put the cup down now, step away. You've committed a mortal sin.

Food: The Ultimate Secret Exposed
  • The grocery store, along with your kitchen sink, are two of the most dangerous places in the world.

I must say pahunkboy, you do come up with some doozies and you are right about the kitchen sink..well, sort of.

I'm a bleach addict, a purist really. It has to be "Clorox," or bust. I add a capful or 2 to my dishwater and I use bleach to sterilize my sinks and counters. I've always washed any chicken, turkey or pork products in vinegar and sea-salt. When I used to eat beef, I would rinse it with water.

Rachel Ray does a cooking show and I saw her take chicken right out of the package and proceed to cook it. I wrote in and received a reply stating the temperature (heat) of cooking would kill any bacteria on the chicken. hmmmmm. Okay!

All of my careful washing and cleaning didn't stop me from picking up a nasty parasite called Entamoeba histolytica. Travelers to endemic areas are at risk for this infection; however I was in Houston. I developed Amebiasis and nearly died as it took the doctors several months to diagnose me.

The infectious diseases folks decided I picked up this parasite from fruits and/or vegetables shipped from certain countries.

And so....I now wash all fresh produce and fruits in dawn and a smidgen of bleach as well as washing my hands fastidiously. And yes, all the soap pump bottles on the sinks in my house have a little bleach mixed in with the hand-soap.
Paranoia can be a good thing!

Regards,
dovie

Bleaching everything and being too clean actually leaves us more susceptible to germs as we do not build a natural immunity to them. The old saying of "you have to eat a speck of dirt before you die" was right.

lets have a round of applaud for cancers that food causes.

Clap your hands for red die number 3.     Stomp your feet in joy for HFCS mercury.

Isnt it great we boost the national output?   when people get cancer the stocks do better.  we sell lots of pills and that boost profits - it is good for America.

so I'm curious pahunkboy....

the coffee that you said you drink....what brand is it? Are the berries picked from the wild?

They're not? They're grown on a commercial farm?

Guess what? Your coffee is genetically modified...and the color? Look on the side of the label. You'll find dyes..probably even that red dye number 3.

Oh and if it is picked from the wild....where are they washing the berries? The amazon basin? Any idea how much mercury is present in the amazon?

Aaaannnddd..the foods that you eat....how are you getting them? From the store? Delivered by a truck that evacuates fumes from gasoline that land on the food...

yup, sounds healthy to me.

Not the same; the issue isn't entirely genetics. It's the health system and culture.
