Just wondering how many of us are interested in Renaissance Faires and SCA... it seems to be a common interest, and if so, does it speak to our need to express creativity and explore alternate realities?

That's a good question.  I've often wondered why kinksters seemed to be into SCA so much.

I probably know what SCA is, but for the life of me can not think of it...then again I just woke up & can't think of much of anything with the massive headache I woke up with.

Sadly there is a high volume of lifestyle people in the state I live in that are involved with Renaissance Faires or the SCA. For me, if someone tells me they are associated with this then that is an immediate no tolerance limit and I move on. If you ever have the (mis)fortune of attending a renaissance faire or one of the Society for Creative Anachronism's events, take a long hard look at the people in attendence. A very large percentage of them are extremely low-class people with no intention of ever being more in life. Most of them have never had anything in life and never will because the concept of hard work and sacrifice is foreign to them. In many ways this type of lifestyle is more addictive than anything else. I have known people who would not go to work because an event fell on a weekend and they could not get the time off and so they get fired. I have known others who had children taken from them because they spent all their money on replica period tents and clothing instead of food and bills. I have known even more who dropped out of high school, never bothered to pursue anything of worth like career or higher education, and in general quickly became very unproductive members of society bouncing from event to event and staying with anyone who would put them up. I was briefly involved with these people when I was around 17 years old for about a year or so before I realized just what kind of trap that lifestyle was and said to hell with that.

But anyways, it is not so much that it speaks to peoples needs to express themselves creatively as it is that it creates an atmosphere of camaraderie with similiar minded people who have essentially stopped being productive culturally and socially. It is the culture of the socially inept and creatively lacking mentality that draws these people forth.

I've been a renny brat since I was 15, and I attended my first faire.   Since then, when I was of legal age, I have worked the local faires as a street hawker, ale wench, performer and gate greeter.    I never knew why so many people had leather cuffs hanging from their belts!

After dabbling in SCA for a few years, I returned to faire, but we had some darn fyne times at events!  I've not been to Pensic, but I did attend GWW, in Arizona...it's something to get up early in the morning and have row after row of tents greeting you!  Tent hopping took on a whole new meaning :)

And how many years of your life did you lose to that lifestyle before you realized you needed more out of the world? Not to be flip, but did this consume a large percentage of your time? I am curious is all and I mean no offense to you. I have a few friends who have severe regrets about being involved with the SCA or the renaissance lifestyle and they have pretty much renounced it because it consumed so very many years of their lives that could have been spent on education, starting their career, etc.

That is your sad experience with some people. It isn't mine.

The man who has my heart, my Master, is on his way to Pensic as I write this.

He was a commisioned officer in the reserves for 17 years, is a college graduate and has an MBA.

The problem when you paint generalizations is you often load so much paint onto the brush, it obscures the entire picture.

AngelicaJ, there is truth to your statement about generalizations. Perhaps the experiences I have had with people throughout my life who were involved with these things have caused me to create pretty negative stereotypes. I am willing to admit to that as I realize that not everyone is the same. It is just that I cannot think of one person that I have actually met who was better off for being involved with the renaissance faire or SCA lifestyle. So perhaps I just did not meet the right people then. *shrugs* It is pretty hard to have and maintain a positive image though when you have never had a positive experience with a group of people.

Wow, that doesn't describe ANY of the SCAdians I know.  Everyone one of my friends in the SCA hold down full time jobs and keep their houses up.  Yes, they put a lot of time into the Society, but don't most people put a lot of their time into their hobbies?

In any large group, you'll find some who take it to an ugly extreme.  Compare the people you were talking about to the people on here who advertise themselves as slaves who want to be kept in a cage 24/7 and only taken out for sex...are they any better?  Does that make all slaves lazy people who are just looking to be supported?  Of course not.

As for why there is so much overlap between the SCA/Ren Faire crowd and the SMBD community, I really don't know.  I hadn't thought about it before, but now that I do look at it I realize that I know a fair number involved in both.   And when I've been to events I've seen people taking the role of slaves.

It is recreation for him and not obsession.

Much in the same way some gamers allow gaming to rule their world, for some people involved in SCA the alternative becomes more important than the reality.

I am guessing that the people you knew spent their money on buying and not actually crafting their clothes and tents, because making the clothes doesn't actually cost that much money.

Once you start to buy things rather than make them, I think you are beginning to miss the whole point of what the SCA is really about.

Well I can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's all the cleavage.  I mean seriously, have you seen some of the outfits[:)]

Oh and the other costumes, and the weapons and the leather and the food. Yea, it's all good.

And lets not forget the secret room behind the one tent with all that mouthwatering leather. Whips and flogger galore.

But mostly its the cleavage.

I would think you would absolutely love this kind of place. You could walk around with a group of your friends and talk about how superior you are to everyone else. Wouldn't that be fun[8|]

Yep. The Cleavage. And the big strong sweaty men wearing all that leather, working the forges, and weilding their weapons. Not to mention the men in kilts. The overall atmosphere of joviality and comraderie. There's also the ale and moonshine. But mostly, the cleavage.

Have you considered that you might be drawn to the low class types?  I have known more than a few with college degrees, with jobs that paid well, and some of them even made enough money in the regular world to retire early and travel.
Before you lay that brush of distain on someone else consider that you have been close enough to know them.
What does that say about you?

I only need Halloween once a year. 

I am a bit curious though of folks who want to dress up, talk differently and pretend they are someone or somwhere else on a regular basis. 

We've attended a Faire that also include steampunk folks to obseve the party.  It seemed like one big live performance art gathering.

Not much different than a large public play gathering but without the same volume of exposed penises.
