Agincourt?  How do you get by breaking the castle up with the National Trust?

Once more unto the breach, dear friends.

Hank.

I admit to being woefully out of the loop these days, but I don't recall ever hearing Lady Habiscus spoken of with anything other than fondness and respect. I have friends in Flint and Downriver, and have for nearly a decade. Usually end up hearing about things sooner or later, and nothing unkind has ever made it down the network pipeline to me, about Lady Habiscus.

I met her at Wicked, and she is lovely and charming. She's also a very generous woman who showed me a kindness a little over a year ago, before she'd ever even met me. She doe not deserve to have her name trashed on these boards as you have done. Especially considering she wasn't part of this thread, or the discussion between yoruself and thishereboi. Normally I would say all this in a private email, but you disrespected her publicly and I feel compelled to stand for her publicly.

To keep this on topic. I think that any hobby can consume ones life in a negative manner. This falls squarely on the individua'ls life choice, not the hobby. I've also seen people spend money they coudln't afford on BDSM gear and garments, and emerse themselves in BDSM activities to the extent that their home life suffered.

Char

In answer to the minor hijack ;

The pic is an old pic, even older than the last one I had up, now the hair is mid chest length and I don't have the face fuzz anymore. Bodice making, well for reasons of my other interest, I have bodice making material here, but sewing with a machine I have yet to learn, but that is on the back burner as I have other messes to sort out first, namely an outboard motor in pieces in the middle of my floor, a set of nineteenth century ships navigation lights to sort out for sale and a disassembled Numatic vacuum motor to put back together and my jewellery forge to finish. I also have a part finished Iron age sword and a few bovine horns to make into drinking horns hanging around.

In answer to the question about using ancient sites, well the only ancient site we ever did use was Old Sarum in Wiltshire, but even then under the careful watch of the English Heritage nazis. Old sites in this country although it is claimed they are for the people, this in reality is not the case, they are not freely accessible as one might think they are, take Stonehenge for example, look at what is happening there.

well, then a new pic showing your current appearance is in order, don't you think? *grin*

and I am always awed by your diverse skills and interests :)

We have an event that takes place every year, that I take my boys to and have for about 7 years now. It is a 3 night, 4 day camping event. Lots of fun. My boys look forward to it all year. I do confess to keeping a hotel booked, so I can sneak off and get a hot shower. Doing the 4 days without a shower thing wasn't working for me.

GreedyTop -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 6:51:36 AM)

one of the things I loved about Southern (and Santa Barbara) was the onsite camping.  Tampa Faire doesnt have that (grrrrrrr.. although it is also one of those marginal Faires.. too little emphasis on authenticity.. but at least no Klingons manning booths)

The real fun of any event happens at the after party [:D] Ren Faires are ok fun, but the dancing around the campfire and tent hopping is the best. Although, I'm getting too old for that. I just let the fun come to me these days.

Aneirin -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 8:38:37 AM)

Yeah, I will second that, the end of day into the early morning campfire activities were one of the best parts. Drinking homebrew, playing instruments (me had a bodhran) mostly Irish jigs and reels, singing, dancing and the inevitable jumping through the campfire was excellent and with that the meeting and talking with all sorts of people, we even lured in some of the Ermine Street Guard who were envious of the way we celebrate at the end of the day.

AGREED.

Missokyst -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:01:06 AM)

So basically you are saying that only you change?  Did you consider that many of those people enjoy the faire for theater, for commaradrie, for the the clothing and a day away from mundane life?  I know several SCA people and most of those are college educated, successful people.  Do you assume that the majority of people who either enjoy SCA or enjoy the faires themselves are low class simply because those happened to be what you experienced in your youth?
You are making a judgement call with no real backup other than some experience you had, which.. I might add, may have to do with your age.  Do you think that any of the SCA's who might have been college educated did not feel the urge to hang out with a 17 yr old?

Missokyst, please review the earlier comment in which I stated that: "I was briefly involved with these people when I was around 17 years old for about a year or so before I realized just what kind of trap that lifestyle was and said to hell with that."

You really should learn to put things into their proper context before throwing judgement calls out on people. Generally I have never had an issue with your postings but a certain modicum of intelligence should always prevail at least.

Jeffff -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:07:55 AM)

I have been to one Ren Faire, years ago.

I would rather be caught dead with a banjo in my hands and surrounded by gay porn than attend another.

GreedyTop -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:10:26 AM)

come to Faire with me, Jeffff. I promise, you will be astounded

Missokyst -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:12:10 AM)

LOL...yep, no way could I live it as a seasonal lifestyle either.  I hate camping!  Tolerable camping involves a motorhome with full ammenities for me, and frequent dinners out.
But, I can see the faires.. the faires are theater.  Dressing up, enjoying live theater with people who are much better at it than I am.  When I see people making the leap from partaking in faires, to suddenly becoming a member of the SCA, I wonder if for them that impromtu after work drink means they are likely to develop alcoholism.  Not all faire goers join SCA.  I am not a good enough actress to develop the skills it takes to pass myself off as a medieval wench.  Anyone who can has talent beyond mine, and if they choose that as a skill which works, more power to them.  My skills directed me to use reasoning to solve problems.

I did the whole sca thing when I was about 15 to 17.

I grew bored with it and the idea of no modern conveniences was just gross to me.

I even hate camping.

I kinda like reality.

I'll bet you own a banjo.

GreedyTop -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:14:40 AM)

I do not.  I have a totally unused guitar(by me), though

Jeffff -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:20:03 AM)

You should trade it in on a lute!

It's that early morning realization that you are NOT in your tent!  That..and the fact everyone wakes with the same hairdo :)

ShaharThorne -> RE: Renaissance Faires, SCA... (8/2/2010 9:28:46 AM)

I wish to know what the OPs opinion is for Japanese anime conventions.  These are quite popular these days and lets not forget thr comic cons.  San Diego just had the biggest one on record (according to some sources).  I volunteered for the DragonCon back in 2002, while working OwlCon in Houston 2 times.

I see quite a range of folks at both sites but I will not condemn therm.  I am a comic book collector and my daughter loves her anime conventions (with proper escort).  We got one coming up on New Years Eve.  I am get the passes next month and reserving our room since I will be minding the kids this year.  I might be poor (disabled) but I want my daughter to have what I was not able to get (OMG!!!  I sound like her father!) when I was younger (I did have a horse or two...I lived on a farm at that time...)

By lumping one group iof folks into a further group is just nonsense to me.  I met prince and pauper everytime I go to such affairs, no matter what it is.

Now excuse me...I need to depart and make sure my bank account is balanced.  Then I have to work some more on a commission.
