ORIGINAL: wpf0027 Finally a thread where I am an expert. I was a bartender in college for three years and then managed a Wine & Spirits store for about 4 years of grad school. To an extent quality of the vodka does not matter that much on mixed drinks. The real low shelf stuff will taste bad no matter what you put in it. The real high end is kind of a waste unless you are having traditional martinis. I would stick to mid shelf like Smirnoff ( or Svedka if they have it where you are, same price point but better). That way it will taste ok in most drinks, be good enough if people get pretty drunk and move on to shots, and not kill your wallet. Rum is another one you can get away with not breaking the bank. On tequila, whiskey, and gin you get what you pay for mostly because they have to be aged to not taste like paint thinner. I've seen people lose a hell lot of money for trying to tell what brand of drink was used in mixed drinks or cocktails, unless you go really cheap and nasty it doesn't matter all that much and is more a snob thing to do, most professional bar tenders will have 2 sets of bottles, one for the people who drink it neat (or with a drop of something in it) and one for the mixers/cocktails. I'm not into tequila but with gin and tonic, you can only tell to an extend what it is when it is mixed and a decent single malt should NEVER be mixed, the only thing that should go in it is a few drops of spring water, if you want to mess around with a single malt for mixed drinks, you simply have not got enough taste or culture to even deserve a prime single malt because you're a damned barbarian without taste buds!
