Do I need Microsoft Works? That's almost 300 mb.

Is the wireless adapter inside the computer, or plugged into a usb port?

That depends. Do you often use the Word feature, or spreadsheets and calendar?

I use Word some. Hell, I shouldn't have to take it out, that's not the problem.

The fact that your internet seems slow some of the time, and faster at other times leads me to your wireless adapter(and the strength of signals it is picking up) I had to rearrange my whole office just to be sure my antenna thingy pointed south

For finding more free space on your C drive though, try this if you havent already. Go to "My Computer", right click on C Drive and select properties, and click the "Disc Cleanup".

Yeah, I have my laptop sideways on my desk, for optimal thingyness

I did the disk cleanup I think... let me make sure, though.

If you have MS Office, then you do not need MS Works.

I'm certainly no computer guru and you may have already done all this... if so, then I quietly slip to the back of the room and stay quiet. (Probably should do that anyway as you're getting alot of good help).

Before my kids all moved out and got computers of their own, my computer would have all sorts of stuff on it. Doing pretty much the same as yours. A friend told me that sometimes ads and/or viruses would get in there undetected and run programs in the background. Turning off all programs, he would have me run manual scans of my virus protection and ad aware. Running the manual scans would pick up things that otherwise wouldn't be caught. I don't know why .. didn't ask. But I would run them, reboot, run them again. I also had a program on their called pc cleaner I think. It would let me see what was in the registry and tell me if it was junk stuff running.

Good luck!! Hope you get it up and running

kallisto, that's interesting. I wonder if it's because when your antivirus and anti-malware programs were running automatically, you had other programs running. When a program's running or a file is in use, they can't be cleaned, and I don't think they can even be thoroughly scanned.

Exactly what I thought MadameMarque. My problem is I know just enough to be completely dangerous with computers. I just knew that it seemed to work and I didn't ask the "hows and whys".

kallisto, thanks for the help.

Alas, I think my pc is on its last leg. I'm more than a little fed up, and may just shit can it, and turn my net service off until I can get a new pc. We'll see.

Thanks everyone, especially poise.

There you are! I was thinking maybe your laptop caught fire from all the work you were making it do for you. Glad to see you connected again, but sad that it isnt in a positive aspect.   You were making such progress!
Im not sure you intended to make such a lengthy thread about your computer issues, but Id be happy to discuss more options for you once your frustration subsides.

No, I wanted to fix the whole shooting match by the end of the first page

Can't even get it to finish disk cleanup. Maybe I should just limp it along until early next year.

So I should refrain from further inquiries to help narrow the cause?

No, any suggestions are appreciated

I have a couple of Wordpad documents I need to save to somwhere, then I'm going to unload Works, see if that gets me enough space to try to defrag (again).

Another question; let's say I can get Disk Cleaner to do its duty, should I delete the temp files?

Do you also have Microsoft Office, or at least the disc for WOrks in the event you need to reinstall? If so, just email yourself whatever documents you need to save.

Yes yes yes!!!!

Also, in case you forgot, you can go back into that Log file and remove Hcupdate. I think that was also pretty large.
(and its safe to remove)

You could also have alot of hidden files that most people arent aware of. Let's go deeper!
My computer - C drive - Documents and settings - Default User - Local Settings
In here will be 2 files. One titled Temporary Internet Files, and one titled Temp
Click on the Temporary Internet One and you will see Content Ie5 or similar.
Open that and if there are files, select all and delete.
The Temp folder most likely wont have anything, but if it does, repeat the same actions.
