I think I took that hcupdate one out last night.

No, I don't have the Office or Works disc, but that's okay, I hardly use it, and could use the one at work if need be.

Back to tinkering...

Another: if I do take off Works, then what happens to the documents I still have? They go poof, or I just can't open them?

You will need a program that can read them, such as Works. Email them to your work email, or print them out perhaps?
Also, I made a post at the same time you did. Look at the end of page 5 in case you missed it.

Why not just download the writer program from openoffice.org? You can install the whole thing which includes an excel type program, a draw program, ect, or choose which parts you need.

Also tossing it out here, to the OP.

When you got less than a gig left, Windows doesn't like it. I bought a 500GB online for about $52. Software to clone the drive is downloadable for free and if not you can use Norton Ghost. You lose nothing but you gain a bunch of gigs, lots of them in fact, like me when I filled up the 80 and bought the 500. That is a half a terabyte.

Scandisk isn't worth a shit, and defrag only does any good if you deleted a bunch of stuff. Just pay the fifty bucks for a bigger drive and clone it. All even defrag does it to take some of the work out of it for the HD heads when they move. If you go from an 80 to a 500 for example, you have no need whatsoever to defrag, because you already got the benefits of it right now. Those head ain't moving as much. That is all defrag really does. In a Disk Operated System (DOS) the filing system can just about put anything anywhere and find it with no problem.

The problem comes when the Windows swapfile becomes too large and when there ain't no more room, it will just stop, fucking period. I would not even atempt to boot XP or higher from a drive without at least a gig free space. You are lucky it ran at all.

I can't sit here all night to put this in text, if you want to call me mail me. But ironically I have a computer question, but it has to do with something else. But suffice it to say if Windows doesn't get what she needs, she will go into the bathroom and stay there. Not only is she useless then, but now you can't even take a piss. That is the best analogy I can come up with at this time.

If you want to talk about alternative OSes, start a thread about it. I myself heve been here on MEPIS Linux running off the CD with no harddrive. It can be done. You are not a slave to Bill Gates. But since I stole almost everything (shhhhh) I don't really care. If I could copy a bootable disk I could send you a version of XP that would blow your mind. XP corporate. But that would be illegal so forget it (for now). This MF can unformat AND repair a boot sector, on another drive ! What's more they can both have the same product keys because it is a site license, like when you got 400 of the same model PC in the company and you just install it on one and clone it to the rest. So there is no problem getting updates but I still won't let it install Windows Advantage. Some of you might know what that means. I am pretty sure but not 100% sure.

Without reading everyone my advice is to just pay the fifty bucks for the half terabyte, find a copy of ghost somewhere, and if you can't most HD manufacturers have their own available for free download.

And last but not least, do not EVER buy a Western Digital drive. Seagate is tops, Maxtor is really good usually too, but WD is junk. The price is right you think, but when you lose everything, you think again. Been there done that.

That's about it. I'll read this whole thread later when my eyes aren't burning. I would have responded right away but people showed up.

ETA: If you clone, make sure you got SP 2, otherwise when you try to write to the 137th gig it wipes out the FAT and is unrecoverable. I am not sure if this is true of FAT32 systems or NTFS systems or both, just don't take the chance.

Ya know...it really IS just a coincidence that Level hasn't been around since I tried
helping him with his computer. Really...it is!

hope all is well!
