If ANYONE, steals a social security card, its a felony, and with good evidence, locks the person up. Their national status is irrelavent. However, unlike other countries, we in the USA, give each person a lawyer, if they can not afford one, to help guide them through the process. Their native country can talk to the State Department regarding them, if it wishs. Or do you honestly think, popeye1250, that an illegal immigrant doesnt get charged anything when caught?

The US Postal Service, has limits on what can and can not be sent through its service. Money, is an object that can be sent. No one can open a letter, without following strict legal guidelines (like a search warrant, in some states). Last I checked, sending money, in the mail, is NOT criminal. Doesn't matter if its a grandpa sending to his grand child three states away, or an illegal four counties away. If an illegal immigrant wishs to send money by way of a wire service, they can if they wish. You dont seem to really want to treat illegal immigrants under the law fairly (which the 14th gives). Likewise, if you are for, 'what someone does with their money', then I could argue, more taxes are needed. Since, the illegal immigrant pays gas and alochol, both of which are taxed in this country. We just increase that tax, so the illegal immigrant has LESS money to send home. That....popeye1250....is what you just argued. You, a conservative, arguedFOR tax increases.

The goverment enforces the laws of the land. They have a long track record of doing so. from the FBI down to the local police officer, people work to enforce the laws of the land. They may not enforce EVERY law, in EVERY instance, but they do enforces laws to both the extent of the law, and reasonably possible. Otherwise, EVERY person on the highway, would be traveling below the posted speed limit. Maybe someone should secretly tail you, popeye1250, and record on video, your typical driving habits. Wouldn't you like that? That is metaphorically, what your saying, the goverment should do towards illegal immigrants. You just want the eyes of law enforcement directed any other direction then you. So I guess its fair to question.....why would you want law enforcement, not checking on YOU?

Where does your information come from? Could you produce the source?

Since if one third, of illegal immigrants are on DUI charges; how are they getting gas, without paying taxes on it? Since, that too, is ANOTHER, reason people like you, popeye1250, argue illegal immigrants gain while in our country. Getting a functional car, is about as easy in our country, as aquiring a firearm. Getting alochol is even easier. But, what about the other 2/3rds of offenders? Those would be AMERICANS. And lastly, thanks to Republican's typical, line-item bull droppings about 'the Free Enterprise System', and 'Capitalism', someone who will work for peanuts doing the dirtest of work, WILL, get paid.

So, how are they getting the gas, and beer, without paying taxes on either? Last I checked, that was one of the 'reasons', conservatives hate illegal immigrants. But the arguement you make, doesn't have anything to do with what you claim, liberals like (item #1 or 2). Or do conservatives think illegal immigrants are rich? And that rich people, do not cause crimes?

I did check on that source about the number of DUIs in NC. He was correct on that according to the Dept of Transportation.

This is not directed at anything you said Tazzy. Just hooked onto your post.

There has been a great deal of emotional discussion and ranting in this thread about why the citizenship clause should be changed. As an aside I still think Julia's response was the classiest. Aside from that however there has been no discussion (unless I missed it and I apologize if I did) about how the clause creates anchor babies, if in fact it does, and how the changes would come about.

I heard a proponant of change on TV claiming it all revolves aound how the Court has interpreted the words "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof." There have only been one or two cases in which SCOTUS has spoken. The TV fella parses it that the main case United States vs Wong Kim Ark (which found for the birthright citizenship of the children) was not true precedent because the parents had not entered illegally. Well, that's his take. Some make an argument that the crucial words refer to the State having jurisdiction of the children when they were born although some are suggesting that since the parents are still under the jurisdiction of their native land then so are the kids. Maybe that will be the test. Or maybe Congress will have to go through the Amendment process .... 2/3rds of each Chamber and 3/4ths of the State Chambers to effect a change. That is a burdensome process. You really might want to address the Citizenship Clause itself in your debate, and how it would be changed without doing damage to others.

I'm just sayin cause i don't know the answer. Again, I agree strongly with Julia that birthright citizenship is what unites us. You're born here, you're one of us. I like that tradition much more than the bloodline traditions of other nations.

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

It has been interpreted to exclude children of foreign diplomats and children of native american tribes who do not pay federal taxes, I think.

Let me see if I get this straight. You do not believe, illegal immigrants pay taxes? That is your belief, correct? Unfortunately for you, 'belief' and 'fact' are two VERY different concepts. The fact is, those who are in this country illegally, and buy products/services, to which a tax applies to said product/service, is paid by the illegal immigrant. Unless you can prove that 7-11, pays all the taxes for illegal immigrants that buy stuff from their store?

You can't make a rational arguement, that is backed up with FACTS. That states, 'illegal immigrants do NOT pay taxes'. And make sure you provide all sources of information correctly. And that those sources are from legitimate sources (not teapartyandthekkk.com). You have the burden of evidence to provide!
