have you crunched the numbers?

Owner59 -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 8:34:34 PM)

True,it is petty. They deserve a vacation and as long as it`s their money, why should anyone care?

Must be a slow news week.

since when does 400k per year=vast wealth? I made half that this year and not by any definintion of the word "wealthy" do i put myself or the Obama family in that catagory.

Yeah no other first family has ever taken a vacation. All those years "W" spent away from the White House were free.

You too...

You constantly railed against GWB's vacations

No I did not. I think I've commented on it a couple of times but searching the forum couldn't find any. Certainly not constantly.

thornhappy -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 9:22:34 PM)

Hey, the median's what, 46k or so?  $200,000 is a lot of bucks.

Ummm... to the people trying to make ends meet on $25,000 per year, $200,000-$400,000 is vast wealth.
Jus sayin'

tazzygirl -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 9:35:38 PM)

Oh i totally agree.

They should fly coach.

Alone.

Eat at cheap places.. (well they actually do, Pamela's is pretty cheap here in PA)

Lets just have our FL and the kids totally exposed to any and everything.

I recall mentioning about the Bush vacations. Never once have i read, to the best of my memory, where anyone complained about the FL's vacations.

Can the First Lady even be allowed to fly commercial?

Owner59 -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 9:40:02 PM)

Yeah, going after the wife and kids is a pretty cheap shot.

You made my morning, it's nice to laugh. Let's google up some stats for ya...

~50% of the usa population earns less than 26,000 pa, to be earning more than 100k pa would put you in the top 6%, 400,000 and up is roughly the top 1%. You earn 8* the average, you are very wealthy.

Its not like they can tell the SS and others to stay home. They are required by law to guard the First Family at all times.

The Obama's are paying for their portion of the trip. Im glad they are. I dont expect them to have to pick up the whole tab. No one else has had too.

cadenas -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 9:49:43 PM)

Thank you, thank you! Exactly my point. $400k/year is a very good upper-middle-class income. It's certainly well past "making ends meet" but by no means is it "vast wealth".

It's a far cry from the $18 million that BP's Tony Hayward was paid just to LEAVE office.

It's a far cry from the multimillion dollar "fat cat" bonuses that bankers received for running the mortgage mess into the ground.

It's a far cry from the billions of dollars of Wall Street bonuses.

The only thing I am happy about is that posters like owner and domiguy will not be criticizing futer Republican Presidental vacations... oh wait... they will be I guess. After all... that's the other side.

I was out here when Bush was President...Get off your lazy ass and find my posts criticizing the amount of money that the first lady spent on vacation.

Here is a post I found where I condemned the actions of a conservative on vacation.....

"Yesterday, we met George Alan Rekers, the Family Research Council co-founder who has spent his professional career publishing pseudo-scholarly books on how to "cure" gay teenagers and make sure your children grow up straight.

We learned that Mr. Rekers recently went on a lovely vacation with a young man he hired from Rentboy.com. First, Rekers claimed he only learned that his travel companion was a prostitute some time after their vacation started. Rekers also claimed he hired him -- from, once again, Rentboy.com, a website that exists solely to aid gay men in finding sex partners for gay sex -- to help him "lift luggage."
"

It's a fucking classic!!!

tazzygirl -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 10:02:17 PM)

I did that search.... first lady vacation... both with and without your name... nothing popped up.

I did a search on Bush vacation... 9 pages... nothing with your name, Domi.

Care to direct me on what nic you were using at the time?

MissAsylum -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 10:42:55 PM)

i wont argue that, given the state of things. but my understanding of vast wealth is when it comes to empires. Wal-mart, Apple, Hilton hotels, McDonalds's...things like that.

MissAsylum -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/8/2010 10:48:05 PM)

Agreed. No way am I going to sit here and cry "broke". I know that I live well, even after all of my bills are paid. but i could blow all of my cash tomorrow if i decide to pick up a heroine habit.

Heroines are expensive for sure, but they make 10% less than Heroes on average [8D]. That said, 'vast wealth' is pretty relative. For most who are struggling, someone in the top 5% income bracket seems to qualify as pretty damned wealthy.

On topic- I have no issue with those who have the money going on vacation as much as they want, but what I do find a bit annoying is a President making speeches about how we all have to tighten our belts and taking pot shots at the rich, while his own family takes luxury vacations.

Since this is a private trip, the White House seems to be suggesting that the Obamas are personally paying all costs associated with the vacation."

Well if they are suggesting that, then I think they might be lying. But they claim to be left, so I am sure you are ok with that.

Wasn't there a thread about him telling people to stay away from Vegas and save their money?

MissAsylum -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/9/2010 5:07:25 AM)

off topic- as long a you knew what i meant. i'm a ghastly speller. And while i hear your point loud and clear, you also used the word "seems". If i was able to just get by week to week, i agree that i would seem wealthy in comparisson to somebody who has absolutely nothing. however, wealth also includes assets, not just dollar figures. i have a house and a car. nothing to sneeze at. i am fortunate to actually own my house, but it is less than half what it was worth when i bought it. cars go down in value quite rapidly, so scratch that off the solid asset list. but on topic, if you plan very well, there is nothing wrong with a luxury vacation. we dont know where the rest of their money from the 400k is going. in a sense, its none of our business.

mnottertail -> RE: While Obama Preaches Sacrifice & Rails Against "Fat Cat" Businessmen (8/9/2010 5:13:49 AM)

you done good with ghastly, so it aint all bad.
