I have been watching shows about hoarding and OCD this summer. I have to say I feel as though these shows have been majorly educational for me in a big way. I see that some of the people I love have had some of these problems...

I was at my brother's house, and he has a home theater room. I watched these shows on his large screen HDTV... I was even more floored at how hoarding looked on my smaller screen, which brings me to the point of this post... do you think these shows are educational or like a car accident in that you can't turn away because of the "gross" factor?

I think the gross factor is what draws a lot of the audience. I think the programs are good in that the shows make it more obvious it is a mental problem more than laziness or bad housekeeping skills.

I also don't really approve of such shows because I think the producers get ratings at the expense of the hoarders/collectors. I think the repercussions from exposing themselves that way are downplayed, if considered at all.

the gross factor definitely. I've watched them and I've seen nothing at all educational about them except maybe that  I don't want to be like them or involve myself with one or be around one who is like that. I've had to deal with a daughter who is like that and it was not easy to deal with.

I find "hoarders" more exploitive than "Hoarders: Buried Alive"... the first one they pay for a clean up crew in an emergency situation, which a year later usually fails because they did not deal with the mental problem... the second follows them over a year in a nonemergency situation, where they are motivated to change themselves, and have success at it.

You didn't learn anything about what was going on in your daughter's head by watching it?

Car wrecks you can't turn away from, because quite frankly the only reason i watch them is to see how appalingly other people live and gawk and think "oh my god thank god I am not as bas as all that!" I am for the most part fasinated by the situations people get themselves in.

Once or twice the show did make me sad and piss me off, because the topic triggered me, and my abuse issues and my soft spot for children, but mostly I gawk.

Hey, at least I am honest..

No. After years upon years of therapy I already knew. Didn't need a tv show to tell me.

I really like the idea of the second show better!! I think that WOULD be a public service. It helps the hoarder overcome their problem and it doesn't just exploit them and run.

I don't understand why anyone would be interested in watching shows like that. These people are mentally ill - it's none of my business. The whole thing is sort of lost on me.

Other than gawking, which I freely admited earlier, I also like to see how nice their houses have become, once they get cleaned up and learn to cope with their hoarding. If they ever do.

I can honestly say that I am interested in how the minds of these people work, what is going on in their head, and how they process it....

I suppose for me it is not to gawk, but to understand

And I don't mean to criticize. If people find it interesting, then they find it interesting. I guess i don't get any of the shit they run on TV. I remember 5 or 6 years ago, they had a series called "Heroes" that I watched for 3 or 4 weeks before i got bored with it, but other than that I can't remember the last time I watched anything other than movies, science programs, or sporting events. Everything else just makes me want to through a brick through the screen, which come to think of it probably isn't that bad an idea.

Oh oh oh Panda, we watched that too, but yeah i got bored with it an quit following it.

If it's the one I am thinking of, it wasn't 5 or 6 years ago, it was like 2. It's the one with all the people with special abilities and skylar killing them an stealing them right?

I am a hoarder myself.

It is not that I do not want an empty room, but that I am apathetic. I have more stuff in my room than is proper. So yes, I am mentally impaired - but the plus side is that as a consequence of that impairment I do am a supergenius.

I had a friend help me clean up my room half a year ago, and she removed five garbage bags, and she was kind about it, but it still was a strain on me as I felt obliged to help her clean my room. I would rather sit or stand and watch and direct other people how to work.

I try to not bring things in, but it happens anyway. Like for example a friend having written a book and me buying a copy, or receiving a book to review.

It would be less of a problem if I could earn any money.

I don't think being apathetic about your stuff makes you a hoarder, hoarders from my understanding can't bear to get rid of their stuff because they're afraid something bad will happen, and usually  because they've gone through a trauma.

Like the one woman who hoards food, because there was a time she couldn't afford to feed herself, and felt so helpless, she now hoards food in the determination to never, ever, be in a situation where she couldn't feed herself again.

Another woman her father burnt all her possessions and now she drowns her home in stuff because it helps her feel better that when she was a child her stuff was burnt.

That seems eminently sensible. Mormons are encouraged to have food for one year in their home.

I cannot hoard food: I do not have the room for it. Besides, my diet is limited to yoghurt, and that keeps for three days at most without refridgeration.

There was a programme on British TV a few years ago in which a guy hoarded, and they explained why. He was a Polish Jew and a survivor of the Nazi death camps. The programme tried very much to help him to deal with his overwhelming trauma, and to turn his home into somewhere he wanted to live, not somewhere he wanted to hide.

Poor guy had newspapers piled floor to ceiling in every room. He had bottles of urine and grocery bags of excrement in every room. Some rooms were literally filled floor to ceiling and he couldn't get in to them. There were only two rooms (of about 10) that he had made 'tunnels' into. His bedroom was a matress on a waist-high pile of papers, surrounded by towering piles of paper and black refuse sacks.

It was heart-breaking, but it actually made me think. I work in a disadvantaged community with children from very disadvantaged backgrounds. It inspired me to do a lot of reading and talking with professionals to try to understand why some parents (and children) are like they are, and what I can do to help. Not just OCD, but a wide range of mental, emotional and social problems.

I can't do much, but I do all I can. And this was inspired by one of those 'gawk' television programmes. So maybe they do help a little, after all

It depends to me how the show is produced. I have seen shows where it was very informative and therefore also interesting to see. However I have also seen shows where it was not informative like and felt more just to expose people in which case I turned off. So it depends on the producer in my opinion.

It is a very sad reflection on society that these fly on the wall people watching so called entertainment shows exist, and they only exist because people want to watch them, demand and supply, something that just gets more sinister all the time as each producer seeks to delight the baying crowd more so to get the ratings.

Is our current tv programming revealing that we are becoming a scathing judgemental bunch of yoyeurs. If someone has a mental or emotional discrepancy, they may not fully understand the implications which can arise from them being in the public eye as entertainment value only, attention where they may not have had it before, appearance money becoming a degree of wealth perhaps, but in reality all that they are, are human animals in the tv zoo.

Honestly to myself, this kind of programming draws some parallels with the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 and some of the more questionable Expose's exhibited there.

This.

I hate most reality tv and most especially those shows like the described, that, to me, take advantage of people to make money. There is one about drug and/or alcohol interventions, I've seen advertised, that is similar. It makes me sick to my stomach that these people are being exploited so horribly.

In my mind, it's the worst form of nonconsensual humiliation I've ever seen.
