What Sanity is also forgetting is that the water considered "warm" enough to aid in breaking down oil stops being warm enough as deep as 500 or 1000 feet. With dispersants binding oil to water, the oil gets "heavier" and sinks to cooler water, making it harder for the oil to break down. Not to mention that "heavier" substances travel in a path in water known as a current. This isn't a little bit of grease in a large sink and soap. The oil will not disperse in such a manner as seen in a Dawn commercial. I suspect with the possibility of plankton being severely contaminated (read "poisoned") there will be at one instance of "red tide" in the coming months from the Gulf. boi

Archer and MasterCord, thank you for your informed input. I wonder myself why there are no pictures of this 3 ft deep purple jelly. On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that 75% of the oil has been cleaned up. I heard on the radio (Yes, NPR[;)]), that the opposing sides are using different methods for reaching that figure. The pro "everything is just fine side" of the spill is including the oil captured as it came out of the damaged well head in that 75% figure. I wondered why the dispersants were being used when it would be easier to clean up the spill if the oil was NOT emulsified (thanks for confirming that, Archer). Perhaps, out of sight out of mind? WHAT DISASTER IS GOING TO HAVE TO HAPPEN IN ORDER FOR OUR COUNTRY TO GET THE FUCKING OIL MONKEY OFF OUR BACK? The "oh it's not so bad" crowd makes me sick. How very short sighted and wrong.

I find it both amusing and sad that we have so many proposals for things we had already started in the 70s, only to abandon them in the early 80s. We could have/should have been benefiting from 30 years of progress.

I believe Obamas in it for political expediency, as per his usual. In California's case, the same governor sandbagged progress as the one who became president and sandbagged it. From there, California's bizarre proposition process hamstrings itself. No taxes, but no governance choices either. Popular decree sounds good, but never looks at the long term or at the realistic funding. Both executive and legislative branches are handcuffed, unable to govern. So stupid decisions are made, not because anyone wants them, but because the mandates demand them. It's a lesson in how not to run things.

The people who need fear, the people who need crisis to drive an agenda will undoubtedly never quit beating their alarmist drums but right now there is very little evidence supporting their wild claims. I dont doubt that some people, such as Archer (who is usually not as offensive or emotional in his posts as he is in this thread) really believe there is a long term problem with this spill, but seriously - the natural seepage of oil from under the Gulf of Mexico is comparable to the BP spill over the long haul. More accurately, neither side of those agenda yet know what the overall damage is now or will be in the long term. There's not even anything close to agreement on how much oil is still there--I've heard from 20% to 80%.

Sanity orry if the fact that I called you on the seriosly oversimplification you soutted off as just that seemed like an attack on anything other than the far oversimplified graphic you used to minimize the situation's potential. Now to put your graphic in terms of my explination of just how much water is impacted with this spill. Not the oil itself but the water that is polluted to the point where it is unfit to drink, and one must assume breath for those who breathe water. Take that one 24 oz can of oil in that picture and multiply it by 60,000 and put all those cans on the field. There is an accurate representation of the water in the gulf that the oil spilled has the potential to pollute. My emotionalism (which I question your knowledge of my level of in this piece) is/ was based on the fact that you chose to ignore the 1:60,000 ratio that is a published fact. You can remove 100% of the oil and still you have the disolved contaminants that it leaves behind. At least that is what The EPA and the State Environmental regulators and all the published scientific information that I work with on a daily basis tells me. A serious problem that you choose to ignore entirely and still leave unaddressed. If all it took was getting the oil off the surface and dispersing it that would be something else. But that is like spilling sand on a carpet and then taking a broom and spreading it around the carpet until it all pretty much sank in between the fibers and saying the carpet was then cleaned up.
