I have a hard time with trying to understand the full extent of the Muslim religion and of its people. Growing up in Texas, there was one Muslim girl, but I didn't go near her simply because we matriculated in different social groups. When I moved to Virginia, I met some of the men. They were kind to me. Even after 9/11 (I was in Texas when it happened), I didn't feel it was necessary to fear all Muslims...just the extremists.
When I started going to school again for my culinary certificate, that's when I started hanging out a lot of with a Muslim girl. She was very sweet and I really enjoyed spending a lot of time with her. That was about the time the whole Israeli strikes were happening with Palestine (I think; I'm not quite awake yet. -Sheepish grin.) We started talking, and she let slip some really horrible feelings that made me uncomfortable. She said that Hitler should have killed all of the Jews. That they were nasty, horrible people who indoctrinated their children into hating Palestinians. She then told me about a movie/play she loved to watch about a terrorist who was falling in love with someone who wasn't, and the one who wasn't was trying to stop the terrorist (I can't remember if the man or woman was the terrorist). He/she thought that love would same them both, so they ran into the one with the bomb. They both died. My school acquaintance told me how heroic it was and how she admired them both.
I doubt that this girl is a terrorist, but she did make me very uncomfortable, so I stopped talking to her for this and other reasons. One of my best friend is Jewish, and I don't know what I would do without her if Hitler had killed all of the Jews. That kind of mindset makes me afraid. The mindset that all Americans are evil/infidels makes me afraid. It makes me wonder if she was on her own in that belief, or if a lot of Muslims and people from the middle east believe that.
I can't sell you in Islam or anything else. My only meaningful experience was with someone who would wish my friend and her kind dead.
