meatcleaver -> RE: List of countries that put America to shame (4/25/2006 5:03:18 AM)

Personally I think the USA as carried on similarly to Britain at the height of its power. As a whole trying to do the decent thing but not always having the wisest heads in charge, sometimes people bordering on criminal and some major major fuck ups along the way but on the whole its actions have had a positive impact on the world.

Damn, I said I was finished with this thread long ago.

Damn it all. Did anyone ever tell you that politics should not be discussed between people who own whips and know how to use them, DM?

Its a right of passage for thinking posters to knock on Delight Machine's political woodhead long and hard only to realize its hard and impermeable. Arguing poltics with him is like trying to change the words of a bad book that's already out in print.

Most Americans laughed along with you after getting over the absolute shock of such idiocy.

EnglishDomNW -> RE: List of countries that put America to shame (4/25/2006 4:02:36 PM)

The strange thing is I've met literally hundreds of Americans, almost all decent ordinary people, friendly, good laugh, same as here or anywhere.  I never met any American that would seriously try and impress on me how great America was.  It just never came up in any conversations anywhere.  (ok there was one guy in Texas who kept pointing to his "Bush-Cheney" bumper sticker and grinning but I think he'd been sniffing some household detergent.)

Then you come on the internet and they're everywhere, like some network of nationalistic nerds who bash they're keyboards to pieces if you don't agree with them.

I've never known this happen with anyone from any other country.  Who are these people?  Do their mum's know they're doing this?

I'm sorry. I apologize for my whole country. Some Americans like to hide behind a keyboard because they didn't have the guts to actually get to the frontline in any service to their supposedly beloved country. I guess they get off on the glory of those that did actually do something.

As you mentioned, most Americans aren't bad people. Most Americans don't feel the need to swing from a rope while doing an imitation of Tarzan's best yodel. Most Americans just can't be bothered with that kind of petty bullshit. We are just people. We currently have a very bad government IMHO. We voted, but the electoral college in this country really cancels out popular vote.

Do their mums know what some people are doing? I hope not. Their mums would be ashamed.

EnglishDomNW -> RE: List of countries that put America to shame (4/25/2006 4:16:03 PM)

By the way, I found this.  It's from a BBC report on The Economist's Top 10 Best Countries list

'TOP TEN COUNTRIES'
1 Ireland2 Switzerland3 Norway4 Luxembourg5 Sweden6 Australia7 Iceland8 Italy9 Denmark10 Spain America comes 13th.  (the UK does even worse before anyone accuses me of bias, we came a lowly 29th) You can see the report herehttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4020523.stm And you can also find some quite surprising statistics about various nations herehttp://www.vexen.co.uk/countries/best.html

Lol...strangely enough I agree with this finding, I love where I live but fully admit to be biased. [;)]

The second link is very interesting   under aid to developing countries you don't do so well DM.

Hmm Switzerland is supposed to be the second best place to live. This is where I definitely disagree with the survey. Having spent some time with friends who live there, after a week I was clawing at the walls and thinking about making a break for France.

I understand why it is seen as second best, this survey is obviously compiled by affluent bourgeois people but hell, if I have to go back there again, I swear I'll slash my wrists!

This is taken from your first ever post on collarme:

"Americans, stick to what you do best.  Eat a lot, wave a flag, bully small nations and behave like the fat kid at school that used to run around saying "I'm the best, I'm the best", while the rest of us cringed.  Your country sucks."

I agree with you completely about nerds bashing on keyboards.

Sorry caitlyn, I think you made a mistake there. That was ScotDom39 that made the second statement you quoted. That wasn't EnglishDomNW.

But I'd really hate to see your point ignored by people correcting you, and maybe the same point can be made anyway. I think this quote works pretty well too:

quote:

I've lived in the USA but happen to prefer England.  And you could argue that practically everything good on the entire planet - including America - originated here.

So despite the fact that EnglishDomNW has "never known this happen with any other country," you could argue that apparently this does happen with at least one other country: You could argue that there's a person from Britain who does just the thing EnglishDomNW finds so objectionable: EnglishDomNW
