marie, we have a crock pot, an electric skillet, a camping stove, a grill, a rice cooker,We had a toaster oven but got rid of it.

I also like to hear other people's favorite ways, cause it creates a sense of commadary and hanging out, an I also get ideas that way too lol.

get an electric hotplate. A crockpot, and an indoor electric grill....oh and a toaster oven. They even make electric frying pans. And they're all pretty cheap.

Charcoal, about a millimeter from a two inch thick filet mignon. Some bacon to spread the fire to make it really black and blue, which means burnt to a crisp on the outside but cold on the inside.

But people started talking solar, so here I go. You have seen those rear projection TVs right ? Well in every one of them is what is called a fresnel. This is underneath the screen and sorta collates the light rays but it is a clear sheet that magnifies. Therefore like a magnifying glass it can be used to concentrate the sun's rays and being possibly from a 52", it does it quite well. A buddy and I actually burnt the asphalt in a parking lot with one. I don't mean melted it, I MEAN BURNED.

Power like that is cotrollable though, you can move the lens up and down to make the focal point larger. Actually when you have it totally concentrated it is so bright that you should not look directly at it. You'll have an image burned into you reatinae for days.

There are alot of these things out there as they get older because they are becoming unservicable. But then also if you have a self contained DLP or projo LCD (also self contained) you also have one.

I'd like to have that kind of heat to cook with actually, but if I can't even look at it, that's not practical.

The closest I can come right now is the Caloric infrared broiler. You have to preheat this thing for like ten minutes or something and the element in it turns orange, almost yellow. Then you have to stack up some cookie sheets, pans and whatever to get it close enough for me. You do not turn your back on this thing. I want my meat to catch on fire, and quickly. I want a cool center. This is also referred to as Philadephia style.

Veggies, just nukem. That is except for asparagus. Asparagus is to be fried in butter with a clove or two of garlic cut up, and some sea salt if everyone is OK with that. And it is to be al dente. Carrots can be fried the same way.

Corn and potatoes, either steam them or nuke them. I just about don't boil anything but my steamer can't handle corn on the cob. Biscuits ? If you must you got an oven that is not fully heated to that temperature but you got a 1,000 degree heat source in there. I think it will cook.

And if you go the other route and cook like a human, you got a roast, some mashed spuds, hopefully some corn off the cob to put on the spuds. And the gravy must be made with pan drippings, no gravy mixes at all.

And then real butter goes on damnear everything, not margarine or anything else. It has to have the real seal and I am thinking of going Kosher with that. I seem to agree with them on alot of things that are not good.

Unfortunately they are not going to help me out on the pork roasts. Pork gets a quick burn and then sits in the oven for hours after hours. But in the end noone needs a knife. You stick a fork in it and you take a piece. It cuts just fine with your fork thereafter. No knives needed. And nice Black Gravy. Want the recipe for that just ask.

But then there is my spaghetti sauce, and really, I can't say that cooking that is better with gas. I like gas because of the high heat ability. That is not an issue with my sauce or my chicken paprikash.

Note that none of what I have described is for everyday, but it says "favorite" up there.

Sloooow smokin', baby.  16-18 hours having a brisket sit there at 225 F, sucking up the smoke from cherry and peach wood... or 12 hours with cherry and apple smoke permeating a couple perfect boston butt roasts.  You want it?  Yeah, you want it, you know you do.  Who's your pitmaster?  Yeah, that's right...

Edit:
Someone mentioned an iron.  I have an OLD iron, with some dings in it, relegated specifically to grilled cheese sandwiches.  Best grilled cheese ever.

Being a truck driver, and the fact that truck stop food is REALLY expensive I have the smallest George Foreman Grill that they make, a microwave, a toaster oven with bake & broil, a single cooker that I can boil pasta, slow cook, make rice (isn't that what minute rice & a microwave are for??? LOL) fry, and  a bunch of other stuff, plus I have a 32 oz electric skillet. Since at the moment my inverter that runs all this stuff isn't working I have a frying pan & sauce pan that plug into a lighter, another thing that plugs into the lighter that I can boil water, and a meal heater cooker that looks like a lunchbox that also plugs into the lighter.

John Brown's guide to urban survival points out you can cook on your car engine if you really need to do so.

Years ago we used to do that on a semi truck engine manifold. You could cook a whole meal that way. A few years ago at a truck show, I'd say probably about 4 years ago, 2 drivers had a cookoff. They each made a roast, with all the veggies, needless to say they actually came out good...LOL a bunch of us were brave enough to sample it.

I have to say this  thread has brought back memories. I have a very deer friend Sweetsub1957..she makes the best  grilled cheese sandwhiches ever...its a running joke between us.  She is also awsome in the kitchen with everything. But, back in the day when I was broke and car camping and had kids to feed....  I'd get a paper sack like one at the grocery store..tear it down one side...prepare cheese sandwhiches.  Plug in an iron.....place sandwhiches between paper....Iron both sides of paper.  Wa La!!   cheese sandwhiches without a stove....

Barbecue or earth cooking. I love hot stone earth cooking when we get the opportunity. The food is always moist and tasty.
We also have a Victorian log fire (thats made specially for a boat) and you can cook on top of that on cold wintry days. We also have a fish smoker and my slow cooker.

We never use a microwave.

ugh, I cannot even turn on my oven.

if it cannot be cooked in a toaster oven, frying pan, microwave or George Foreman grill, it is being ordered in.

No problem at all marie .

If we didn't have any cooking things at all, and didn't know about them, I'd be in hog heaven to have you tell me we could use crock pots, electric skillets, hot plates, electrick pans, and more!

Gravy mixes?  Are you serious?  They have such things? O.o  If you're not joking, I say we find the inventor and burn the heretic at the stake!  And grill some stakes while we are at it, since we already have the fire going. ;)

MIXES!? O.o
This gives me an angry.  Seriously... I have lost a large deal of hope for humanity now.

I guess not every one is aware of how easy it is to make gravy from drippings, and minus those, from scratch.

*staying out of the gravy fight, it looks messy*

I originally researched the solar thing after Cynthia's comment on solar foil and posted the first link I found... then I got interested in the whole idea of solar cooking (my place is tiny, and even the crock pot heats it up in the summer).
I'm going to make one of these tomorrow and give it a try. I'll post about it if it works.... if it doesn't, I never saw this thread.
