Rob a bank... a BIG one..In my area the root canal usually is around $650 but the crowns are the real expense.

Butch

Ok- it is a Molar- tooth 14.

I called 2 places so far.     $840, and $752.

A cleaning and exam here can run $200!

At this point- $650 would be doable.   Not jump and down happy- but- the price to pay to keep the tooth.

Got a cheaper alternative.
Fly to AZ...Y_ma.  (by the way my _ key is toast on my comp_ter).  Have passport in hand.  Go to Los Algodones Mexico.  Have my dentist make appointment with root canal specialist.  That will cost approximately $270.  Then go back to his office to have impressions made.  Two days later go back to my dentist.  Have 2 new crowns installed for $360 for both.  Get a vacation and dental work taken care of for less than it will cost with American dentists.  Cost is $630 + airline ticket + cheap motel and food.  Shop online for the best deals in motels and air fare.

Lack of being able to afford American dentists led my teeth to get really bad.  My Mexican dentist over the past 4 years has removed 6 roots with no teeth attached ($40 each).  Have had many cavities filled ($40 each).  I've had 2 root canals ($270 each.  I've had 3 dental implants ($500 each).  I have 5 crowns ($180 each)  I get teeth cleaned for $20.  All the care I have gotten is all great!!

That is SO SOOOOOO tempting!

One could easily dump 40k into the teeth.

What is neat about Algodones is that the town is just across the border and is set up to basically take care of the needs of American and Canadian retirees. I have never heard any crime taking place in the town. There don't seem to be any pick pockets at all. Unlike other Mexican border towns, Algodones is small and it seems that the business people and the police work together to keep it a pleasant safe place. The town has dentists, pharmacies, optometrists, chiropractors, as well as stores to buy knock off designers purses, pottery, and jewelry. All of that is found within a few blocks of the border crossing.

The dentists stand behind the work that they do. I didn't like one of my crowns so a new one was made at no cost. That one became loose six months later and another new crown was made, again at no cost to me.

Funny story. i had a bunch of dental work done a few years ago. By "a bunch", i mean 2 crowns, 2 root canals, multiple cavities, and a cleaning. (It had been several years since my last checkup). I was there so long that they forgot to prescribe any painkiller, for when the novocaine wore off. i didn't notice. i was just happy to get out of there after sitting for so many hours in that chair. i was running out the door.

When i went back, to get the replacement caps, they asked how many pills i had left. "What pills?", i said. They both just looked at me. Ah. The dangers of being a masochist. But, really, i barely noticed the discomfort. Apparently, that's really weird.

Root canal, are you kidding me ? With all your Rense and Alex you have not researched this ? This is the worst thing you can do, you know anyone who had one ?

I do, a couple of people. Your teeth are bones and are supposed to be part of your skeletal structure. They are supposed to be as alive as your tibula and fibula, your ulnar and radii. The root canal procedure kills them. That results in dental osteoporosis.

A root canal removes the connection, and to fathom that, think this. Have them take the bones out of your arms and reimplant them. They will decay. They are then dead. Got it ?

With teeth being bones, and they kill them, the ADA and everybody knows that the teeth will eventually decay and they will make more money. You ae the worst conspiracy theorist on this board and you can't recognize a real one right in front of your face ?

PA,
You need to verify your meds with your dentist. Pennicillin is an antibiotic and with all antibiotics should be taken until the entire script is done regardless of how you feel. It is NOT a med to be taken on an as needed basis. Typically a 10 day supply but can be written for much longer depending on the severity and/or when you can get scheduled back in for your procedure. If you are in need of a root canal it is common for pennicillin to be taken to prevent the infection from getting worse and to hopefully kill the infection off so that you can proceed with the root canal. If you have an infection there is a risk of the novacaine not working. If you are having pain with that tooth the pain is from the infection and pennicillin will relieve the pain quickly only because it is getting rid of the infection itself.

She may have intended to write you a script for percocet which is a pain med. It would make sense then for her to tell you to take it only if you need it.

A root canal is a last ditch effort to save a tooth. The decay has gone to the roots so a simple filling will not work. The root canal cleans out the decay and nerves from the tooth. A cap is needed to protect the weak tooth so you can keep it for as long as possible. There is no real guarrantee on how long you will keep that tooth; but dentist are in favor of keeping as many original teeth as possible. Some root canals can be done with little or no pain. Yet others can be quite sore. It would all depend on how deep the root is, the severity of the infection, etc. You do not want to put this off and run the risk of getting an absess. Now there is no doubt about the pain involved - EXTREME! An absess can cause all kinds of damage that is not limited to your mouth.

As someone stated earlier, if there is a dental school nearby you may want to call them for pricing. There are some charities that may help. Some dentists will make financing available. You may want to ask your dentist what options they have or if they can suggest something.

Best of luck to you.

Agree with most on here who realize the seriousness of the issue. You're right, Termy. A derooted tooth will eventually go bad and abcess. Too bad price is an issue. If you plan to live long maybe the best solution is an implant and crown. That is very expensive. Or you can just have the damned thing pulled and not replace it with an implant.

SO I had to run to the store for fixadent.

This dentist is very hands- on.  It is a small office- not an assembly line.

Do not mess with this Hunky! Get it done! If price is superhigh, maybe a dental school? Personally I would not want to be their lab rat, but they have to learn on someone, right?

Algodones is a neat little town.  You cross the border right out of Yuma, Arizona.  Think back to I love lucy when they went across some border on their bikes.  She didn't have her passport.  That is Algodones.  Quiet, you walk across.  The tiny town is right there.

Termy, I have several root canal.  There's never been any bone erosion.

Have you ever gone without a root canal when it was needed?  That's a major disaster, like I related with my cousin.  I worked at a place where my boss's girlfriend ended up in the ICU because of an abscessed tooth.

If a tooth is pulled, it needs to be replaced with something.  Otherwise your remaining teeth will shift, your bite will get hosed, and all sorts of other obnoxious things can happen.

"Have you ever gone without a root canal when it was needed?  "

No. A CDT did tell me that if you have one, just get ready to get dentures eventually. Maybe I should've STFU. I've been lucky with teeth. I've been hit right in the mouth with a 2X4 and still have them all. I haven't been to a dentist since I was a kid having my baby teeth pulled, no tooth fairy for me.

But over the years I've eaten differently than most, plus it might be hereditary. Both my Parents lost their teeth, but my Grandfather kept his all his life. Sometimes these things skip a generation. I'm reevaluating alot of things these days. Details later.
