Oikophobia~ fear of oiks.

As already mentioned a British slang word for an unsophisticated uncultured and objectionable person.

America sure has a way with redefining already in use words.

Coined by a Brit, actually. He took basically added a whole lot more layers of meaning to a previously existing clinical term. In the literature, oikophobia is, 'the fear of home.'

Interesting that the slang should be such an ironic twist.

Notwithstanding that you've got the definition of "oik" right, you're pulling the rest out of your ass.

Oikophobia is an abnormal fear of home or surroundings (look it up). By extension, it has also been used by the British philosopher Roger Scruton to refer to the "anti-culture" attitude of many Western artists and intellectuals.

More flogging of the "liberal elite"...a term used since the Nixon administration.  50 years ago.

I have no problem with Christianity, but many on the right believe that only their brand of Christianity is "real" Christianity.  This comes from personal experience, not the "liberal elite press".

According to them, folks like the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa (yep, Catholics are going to hell), etc. are going to hell, while folks like Hitler and Stalin could go to heaven if they'd accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior at the last minute.  (And yeah, that comes from personal experiences too.)

And how do the christians on the left feel? You do realize that there are a lot of liberal christians out there who also feel that only their brand of Christianity is "real" Christianity. If you don't then you are deluding yourself and if you do, then why do you only mention the ones on the right?

For anyone who may be interested, the following link presents Roger Scruton's June 23, 2006, speech in Antwerp, Belgium. It is a longish read, but clearly lays out his use of the term oikophobia to describe a phenomenon affecting (and in his view, afflicting) Western society today, both in America and Europe.

Roger Scruton on Immigration, Multiculturalism and the Need to Defend the Nation State

The slang has been around far longer than Scruton has.
He may have added to the definition, but the slang was there  before he was a sperm.
Bloody philosophical Brits confusing poor americans

Oh fuck Rule, LMAOOOOO you just made me squeal
I cant handle muppets who think that years of slang  and meaning just disapear because some one had a deep thought. No much how much of an "important thinker" they are thought to be.
kinda like this muppet, the new shakespear
Im sure these new words will supersede any slang ever written ...

Actually, I typed it into several search engines, not just Google, and even looked it up in a dictionary of British slang. "Oik" was there, but not "oikophobia". If "oikophobia" was common British slang, I'd expect to find some evidence of it somewhere. But outside of psychological jargon, the coinage is exclusively attributed to Roger Scruton. And the derivation comes from oikos (Greek: house, family, people, nation), not "oik".

Just sayin... but hey, what do I know? I'm one of those stoopid 'mericans.

Not to be confused with Oinkophobia: fear of pigs.

Wikiphobia: fear of non-government sanctioned information, ask Rich about that one.

What makes a slang word a slang word I ask? It's like a class system we have for proper and improper words. We take ages deciding on if something should go in the OED and then when it does we make it a lower class citizen. Like if working class folk say something it must be slang because the working class said it and they are incapable of using real words such as "Scoundrel".

It's an outrage!
