Here we go again.

Luckily, everyone survived this time.

Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast

NEW ORLEANS, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and burned Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico off Lousiana, west of the site of BP's massive spill, but no leaks were reported.

The Coast Guard said no one was killed in the explosion, which was spotted by a commercial helicopter flying over the site Thursday morning.

Edited because the story has been updated on AP already and apparently there is oil leaking.

The original link has the updated version.

The GOOD thing is.  All workers accounted for.  The rig wasnt in production so, hopefully, there is no leakage. AND, it's in relatively shallow water (<400' according to the article I saw).

One injury, no deaths,  thank god for small mercies, at least for now..

BoiJen -> RE: Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast (9/2/2010 11:18:46 AM)

The article has been updated to say that there's a mile long sheen spreading from the site. from Rule's link....

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site off an offshore petroleum platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana. The site of the explosion is west of where BP's massive spill occurred.

mnottertail -> RE: Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast (9/2/2010 11:20:02 AM)

well the shallow part means it gets to the coastline faster.  hopefully the gear is still around the area.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast (9/2/2010 11:24:44 AM)

A mile long sheen COULD come from the onboard diesel tanks that fuel the engines, generators, cranes, etc.  Let's hope that's what it is.

AP updated the story, if you go back to the link the new version is there.  There is oil leaking.

It was in production according to their article:

The platform is a fixed petroleum platform that was in production at the time of the fire, according to a homeland security operational update obtained by The Associated Press.

The update said the platform was producing about 58,800 gallons of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas per day. The platform can store 4,200 gallons of oil.

Where's Sanity to say that this is a "terrorist attack" or "The Left trying to kill jobs in the area again!"? Come on! This couldn't possibly be a fuckin clue to start moving away from oil as our primary source of energy.

boi

mnottertail -> RE: Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast (9/2/2010 11:55:27 AM)

why would he say that?  he said they all moved out of the area, since we treated them so shabbily, just picked their shit up and left

Im at work, you know, doing stuff that makes money n pays the bills and I dont have time to read breathless updates every 15 minutes.  According the the story at 1 eastern, the well wasnt in production.  I guess they lied.  what a concept.

Affordable energy that you pump right out of the ground is like the Antichrist to far left ecoterrorist types... the idea that grandma might not have to freeze next winter literally just kills them.

How about affordable energy that has a lower potential risk in long term damage? Or affordable energy that isn't gonna run out faster than we're gonna be alive if we keep plowing through it like this? Cuz, eventually, at this rate, grandma will freeze during the winter if we don't fix our shit.

What's so wrong with putting economic, industrial, and environmental long term viability above the current shitty structure?

Affordable? The industry is highly subsidized here. We have fucked up a generation of men and women fighting two wars to protect it for ourselves not to mention the 1 trillion spent on it......Somehow that doesn't strike me as affordable.

Jen simple because it is  dominionist type thinking.  You know the "Christ is coming and going to call us all home, except for all those heathens", thinking.  These people should worry all of us.

Grandma can chop up the fuckin Duncan Phyfe and burn it in a barrel, open the windows down in LA for fucks sake, but you want to starve her to death or have her die for lack of clean water.

Except in this case the christ calling them home would be Gaia summoning her bomb-throwing ecofreaks...
