Other than generally being against the burning of ANY book (other than maybe the US Tax Code) I'd like to see EVERY fairy tale book of religion tossed into the nearest active volcano (along with several of their higher-profile practioners).

The chuckleheads who are organizing this little book club meeting are the among worst examples of what religion does to people. While they have every right to their own expressions of Free Speach, what they're planning to do is just plain stupid.

Maybe we could organize a counter-burn of their favorite book of lies, the good ol' buy-bull!

Hmmmm... since they can't be stopped due to their 1st Amendment rights, maybe the local fire marchall could step in and shut it down for not having a permit. At least I really hope no one issued a permit...

Ridiculous.

If the church actually gave a damn, they should threaten to do it unless certain conditions are met:

1. Prompt denunciation of all acts of terror by Muslim extremists.
2. Discontinuation of laws that punish women for, well, being women in Muslim countries, etc.

They could force Muslim extremists on the defensive that way.  Instead, they're doing nothing more than escalating tensions.

I feel the same way about this as I do about the Cultural Center and Mosque near grond Zero. It's insensitive, but they have a right to do it under the constitution.

It is stupid.  These religions need to stop this crap.  The Koran is not a bad book.  Excess is a bad thing.  Stop taking things to the excess.

Good point.  The Muslim extremists don't follow the book literally, but allow madrassas to misinterpret the book for them.

The book itself doesn't need to be burned, but the madrassas...

Hey, I am all for burning the madrassas. . . but the Koran actually gave woman lots of rights that they did not have, 1500 years ago.

Perhaps reading it instead might give one an insight into the other side.  Just sayin'.  I have been told that it means little to nothing if one reads it in other than the tongue in which it was written.  So learning Arabic should also be part of the process.
The book itself is no big deal, it is those who interpret and bend it.  It is really helpful for leveling the kitchen table, and does not add to global warming that way.

Have you ever seen a Koran?  And you leveled your table with it?  I do not find this believable.

If ideas are such a threat, then so is thinking.

Actual reading of the Quran makes one hell of a difference (and not to cherry pick attack opportunities). These discussions are virtually always by people with no idea what's inside, just as the vast majority of people have never read the Bible--despite their claims.

Yes I have.  I have read it and seen what it offered to females 1500 years ago.  I also know what the "bible" says.  And I know that the New Testament offers females the same freedoms.  I still think that it wrong to burn them.

Having read it in a good English translation I doubt learning arabic is necessary to understand the text. I'm sure the poetic language is nicer in the original but other than that I'm sure the original intent comes through.

It's just like the bible in that people have twisted it to say what they want.

I know.  I still do not think that we should burn books.
