Why not work on the self-esteem issue and leave the ink out of it? That way you can both be happy. If getting tattoos and piercings is considered the only path to happiness of one's self, one would tend to think there are greater issues at work here. Being bipolar has nothing to do with it; those with BPD are not necessarily greater in their "desire to be happy and confident". It happens to everyone.
