Peeling off one or two Senators on a filibuster, so they can win the floor vote; Is it impossible, or just requires leadership this administration is apparently unable to provide? Since you mentioned loss of the 60-vote supermajority, do you remember why there was even an election in MA for Scott Brown to win?

While disputes over abortion coverage and other issues remain, Democrats appeared a whisker away from having enough votes to overcome Republican opposition and pass a sweeping health overhaul in the Senate.

But, he played his game, acted like a big man on campus, sending off a threatening note to a world leader, and expected nothing to come of it. This little stunt of his may have just closed quite a few career doors for him in the future. Sad kids these days arent taught to do more than drink and think about the next day.

To the OP... The kid should be lucky he wasn't extradited to the United States to stand trial. Last I checked, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, share an extradition treaty. But I could be wrong. However, depending the wording of the treaty, he might not have been in any legal danger. Still, making threats, even drunk, towards the President of the United States is a pretty serious matter.

You're quite right: Blair rushed a unilateral extradition treaty (where the American government can demand whoever they want to try while offering nothing in return) through a while back. I would be interested to know if any of the many American citizens who've been sending the Kenyan death threats have been deported and banned from coming back into the country ever again. Probably not, I suspect. This looks a bit like a diversion to me.

Fast Reply in answer to no one in particular but myself Ah, I see, from reading elsewhere, it is possible Obama has a dislike for the British because of what happened to his Grand Father in Kenya, what the British Colonial private army was reported to have done to him after suspecting him of terrorist/freedom fighter involvement. Fair enough, that would be another nail in the coffin for what the British Colonials did to other countries, something us modern Brits are coming to find, our ancestors have soured our patch before we are born, we are disliked for people we had no involvement with. But, if Obama is harbouring a dislike based upon past events, he is playing a dangerous game, a game which may sour America in the British mind, for two wrongs do not make a right, if he is what he was vaunted to be, he has to cast the past aside and work on the present, as it is what people do now that is the future, not the mixed up battles of the past.

A good start would be LaM's thread, "What's Wrong With the Senate?". Your simplistic view that 60 votes provides an unstoppable super-majority ignores other procedural rules that allow legislation to be blocked and ignores that every majority party is not necessarily going to vote in lockstep. You might also want to take a look at the link below. Yes it is from a partisan source but the numbers used are verifiable. Open Left:: Actual Senate supermajority requirements: 72 Democrats As far as your last question, I have no idea what point you are trying to make. Do you?

At this point, I don't think it's well understood how many of the GOP's central health-care policy ideas have already been included as compromises in the health-care bill. But one good way is to look at the GOP's "Solutions for America" homepage, which lays out its health-care plan in some detail. It has four planks. All of them -- yes, you read that right -- are in the Senate health-care bill.
