I so cannot get into the whole debate over caps and non caps, for those people who get bent out of shape over it, perhaps you could view it as creative writing, a bit like poetry where the normal rules of grammar can be broken.

When I first joined the internet, I thought the whole bdsm online interaction was a bit of a game, however after some time I began to appreciate that there were some people who were genuinely serious about the feelings they were playing out online, perhaps the only means they would ever have of interacting in a D/s sense. I saw capitalisation and non capitalisation as just a means to show respect for the roles within bdsm. Ive never had a problem wth people who do it or don't do it, there are bigger and better things to worry about in life.[:)]

Bad:  "hello A/all"
Good: "Hello all"
Bad: "oh my You did hear me MasterJim?"
Good: "Oh my, you did hear me MasterJim?"
Bad: "she is My slut, and I will use her as I please"
Good: "She is my slut, and I will use her as I please."

Perhaps this refresher course in capitalization rules will bring some sense to the online BDSM community.

Well.. if you are going to make a post about persnickittiness (yes I did just make that word up. Call me Samuel Johnson.),here's just a bit of a touch up for ya ; :

You said 'Bad', which is incorrect, you should have said Incorrect:  "hello A/all"
You said 'Good', which is incorrect, both in word usage as well as validity; see note below.  More accurate would have been something like...Still not good enough to be a correction: "Hello all"

Correct:  "Hello, everyone."  (Don't forget the comma!)

**(Good and bad implies nature, not 'correctness'... which is why it is incorrect, for instance, when answering the question..."How are you today?", to reply, "I am good."..... Though you may be a very good girl, the correct answer is "I am well."  [And if you were feeling particularly polite, "I am well, thank you."  And if you wanted to be so polite as to actually seem concerned, "I am well, thank you.  How are you?"])

Incorrect: "oh my You did hear me MasterJim?"
Still Incorrect: "Oh my, you did hear me MasterJim?"

Correct:  "Oh my!  You did hear me, MasterJim?"  (I took the liberty of choosing an exclamation point, both to add color as well as to show the urgency of the poor girl's realization.)

It is interesting to note, that the sentence with the word slut came out quite right, rosenanegra.  It is also interesting to note that you get pretty upset about sentence structure and capitalization, but do not capitalize your own name.... Hello, pot, this is the kettle...

I am just taking the piss out of you, rosanegra.  I agree it can get a bit tedious at times, wading through a see of All/all, Everyone/everyone, etc.

I usually don't go for role play but I think the teacher student theme would have potential.

Hee!  This is always a fun topic.

I'm not kidding, I actually have this on my hard limits, right after "Nobody is to set fire to anybody":  "No making me use funny pronouns on message boards."  I have to maintain my standards, you know!

I say we form a commitee to decide how to punish anyone who doesn't type properly.  Properly being however the individual reader wants it.

I was told once in a school computer lab that I was typing too loudly.

I was once told the same.  Of course I was singing "it's a small world" at the top of my lungs too, so maybe I misheard and they were just telling me to shut the fuck up.

I'm not, "this chick." I prefer Rosa, or Rosanegra. As for who told me I was room monitor, no one. A few friends read a livejournal post of mine on this subject and suggested I paste it to some forums.

MsIncognito -> RE: BDSM and first-grade grammar rules. (4/23/2006 4:53:27 PM)

I tend to agree. However, I still remember thinking I was going to fall off my chair the first time I went to a munch and heard someone pronounce domme as "dom-may."  The first few times I heard it I had no idea what they meant and then it dawned on me and I thought "holy smokes, they not only butcher the English language in  writing but oral French, too." LOL

Of all the problems associated with the BDSM lifestyle, this particular one isn't about to change anything, for better or worse.  Like many other activities, it's an online affectation gone horribly wrong and dragged into the real life of some.  But, regardless, it just isn't that important in the scheme of things.

Lordandmaster -> RE: BDSM and first-grade grammar rules. (4/23/2006 4:55:23 PM)

I love subs who are good at oral French.  (Of course, I prefer oral Latin, but I'm not a picky sort.  I'm not really into oral Greek.)

You're damn right it's not an essay.

First off, you have no topic sentence.  Your introduction is poorly thought out, the conclusion includes expletives, definitely no BCA order, no segues....

I should say, I gradded from high school a while ago, and that's all I remember.  That, and how we dumped Tim in a dumpster once.  Well, twice. From the 8th floor.  But never mind that.

benji

what is wrong with saying Domme as Dommay? i was taught that way... and it makes sense to me.. what if you're talking to someone and they say "i know a Dom (they both sound the same, right?) how do you know if they mean male or female? as for the W/we... i use it only when in chat.. [:D]

A) Why would it matter?

B) You ask "male or female"?

Remembering that you have males who identify as females (sometimes or all the time) females who identify as males (sometomes or all the time) and all other variations.  Sometimes knowing someone's gender is a pretty pointless piece of information.

Of course you can say words however you like, but lots of people dislike and get annoyed (or at the least highly amused) by people saying "dommay"

There is nothing wrong with saying it that way.  If you analyze the word for a few minutes, you'll come up with why it may be more right to pronounce it as Dom.

Dom is a short version of Dominant, which is actually gender neutral.  When Dom was born, someone decided that there should be a female form, and a frenchified version was created, Domme.  If you look at words in french that could be compared, you could come up with Femme, pronounced Fem.  Chatte (female cat) pronounced chatt.

Dommé would be pronounced Dommay, and would mean, in a weird way, dominated, perhaps?  But most french words, where the gender can be changed, you add another of the last letter and an e, but the e is silent.

All of that having been said, no one on this earth can tell you you are wrong to say it that way, just as I can't say you are wrong to pronounce "the" as "monkey", it is up to you how you communicate.

And most importantly, if people you know pronounce it one way, that might be the best way.  No one has ever won by taking the grammatical high ground.

Yours,

benji
