i use the lowercase i specifically because it stands for work that is incomplete. i am currently a work in progress, therefore, a lowercase i works.

i also capitalize the C in Captain because Captain is a proper name in this instance. It is the name i call him by.

PS... Bitatruble........ here are a few for your stockpile..  OOOOOOOOOOOOOO you crack me up sometimes!!! [:D]

juliaoceania -> RE: BDSM and first-grade grammar rules. (4/23/2006 1:22:27 PM)

I really do not care what other people do as long as they are happy. It is not my pet peeve and if it were BDSM chat, forums, and profiles would seriously bug me to no end. It must really get on your nerves...lol.

I think many of us have our own little rules.. if I am in chat I do not capitalize ANYTHING...lol. I am interested in the speed of communication and not in grammar....mine or anyone else's. It is almost like a verbal real time communication venue..I do not capitalize when I speak do I?

I usually only capitalize the word Master, Dominant, or Sir if referrng to my own. I do not feel I owe it to anyone else to capitalize their "title", but sometimes I do. Call me a brat, but I resent anyone "expecting" me to act deferentially to them in a chatroom or a message board because they call themselves a "dom/me", and I think of myself as a "sub". If you are not my dom then I do not owe it to you to be more deferential to you with caps than to anyone else I chat with. If I had a dom that expected me to refer to all other doms with caps I would comply, but then again I do not see that as happening because I only get dommed in real life and not online...smiles

HayaSierra -> RE: BDSM and first-grade grammar rules. (4/23/2006 1:34:22 PM)

Greetings,

Well what about those whose slaves are to refer to themselves as "it's". This occurs quite frequently as well, and it would be considered very awful use of the english language, but is extremely useful where such is needed.

All in all aside though, it is hard to find a way to get certain types of things trained to a slave or submissive about their new life. Especially online. Many use the I/i part to aid in this training, and to differenciate between two individuals of different station and status.

And while I do not do things such as say "I thought such Myself." I do under circumstances use various methods to help a submissive or slave keep their station in mind, including spelling their names in lowercase, and not using capital letters in when refering to them. As for those who are in the lowest Caste in my culture, they are always referred to as "it" 's, no matter who speaks about them. Very simple, but certainly kept in mind and certainly practiced.

This is not just done online, but also offline. For example, in a Hanian House like my own, it is cause for immediate punishment for a slave to yell or scream anything when it is not an emergency -- not even to call out someones' name. They are to walk there and talk to the person, keeping in mind their station as a slave or submissive.  They are not even permitted to speak with Authority. Those who are slaves in my house, or even owned by me learn to speak submissively -- quietly and softly, not using various intonations in the words that they use. It is to such a degree that a slave who speaks properly cannot be heard in my House if two who are free are speaking, or if the TV is on. Whispering is also common, and in many cases when speech is not outrightly forbidden, whispering is the most appropriate form of communication for Hanian slaves, especially amongst themselves.

So a little training online to get one used to this is highly vital, especially for those who are not permitted to refer to themselves by personal pronouns.

Perhaps this refresher course in capitalization rules will bring some sense to the online BDSM community.

Third, really, who gives a fuck?  People can write and say whatever they want.  That's why it's called a PUBLIC forum.  Do you really think anyone is going to change the way he or she writes because of your "refresher course in capitalization"?  Obviously people who do this KNOW that they are not observing the standard rules of capitalization.  It's not as though they all needed you to point this out to them.

hear hear!

it's not like we're totally unaware of our writing styles. i could point out a ton of shit online that perturbs me, however that.. like this post.. would be pedantic

i do recognize that we tend to get lax when it comes to proper spelling online. i do make a habit of making sure my words are spelled correctly because i don't want to get into the lazy habit of spelling things in "chat-ese." when i go to write a paper, i don't want to have gotten used to poor skills and punctuation.

but damn if someone forgets or neglects an apostrophe (which i KNOWINGLY skip those too when i type..) doesn't mean they're a flaming fucking idiot that needs to be schooled on BDSM forum. now if we were all over on the MENSA forum then i'm sure this would be par for the course.

:: passes out Strunk & Whites  The Elements of Style out so everyone has a copy ::

there'll be a quiz tomorrow.

Good heavens!  There seems to be a hot of effort here to organize the rabble.  I'll be following along and
promise to be amused by the results.

So I have decided to write a review of capitalization rules for the online BDSM community... here goes!

That's nice.  You let me know how that works out for you, OK?

Look, I don't honestly know what the fuss is all about.  The purpose of writing is what?  (feel free to sing along if you know the words...) That's right, "Communication".  There are times when writing absolutely needs to impress someone, but for the most part these forums aren't the, um, forum for that kind of writing.  And, if you honestly believe that folks writing in these forums are doing so with the thought of impressing *you*, you need to seek some help.  And quickly.  You know who you are...

My only beef with writing in forums is when I can't understand what the person is trying to say.  Sometimes, this is because they're from, like, Finland or something and don't have the grasp of English that some of us do.  On the other hand, too often I run into words that were written by someone from, like, the planned Dude.  And I just give up.  And that's my point.  If you want me to understand your writing, make it clear.  If you don't care, then I probably won't either.

If Y/you're writing includes of T/things that Clutter i/it up, but I can understand it, then my annoyance LeVel is minor.  But, dude, if my can't see face for what means, then why who is?

You know?

I don't know, Enthralled. I don't think anyone here is qualified to grade our efforts. Well, there was that one Grand Master English Pro- Domlettee from NY with the fake boobs, but I think she went away. Oh, oh, I know! Benji can grade us.

Oh wait. No he can't. He's just a ...

godliness? lol

but none the less, i think it is being read too far into - its just a simple form of respect.

a recognition that you view your Master as powerful .... More. That you view Him as your owner, and simply recognize your more submissive position, by the keeping of lower case 'i'.

i am not required to do this but enjoy showing His power over me through the little ways i can.
