MasterMalcolm -> Geek as a lifestyle. (9/19/2010 3:02:36 PM)

Arr!  I know it be talk like a pirate day.  That be something only geeks celebrate.  Tis a good day for everyone to be making sure the rum is gone!  (Why is the rum always gone?)

I know I am still the new guy and I still need to change my name to fit in, but in filling out the.....let's call it a resume....there was the "edit profile/interests/lifestyles"

There should be an entry for "Geek."  I am not a nerd, I am a geek.  It doesn't even need a definition; geeks know each other.  It's like a 6th sense.  It is also every bit a lifestyle as Gorean and way more than Atkins.

All the geeks on the site say "ARRRRRRRRRR! It be TLAPD!"

Orrrr, maybe we'll just change your mundane passworrrds and empty yourrr bank-accounts.  Plus we'll plunder your wenches and rape your cities!

mbes -> RE: Geek as a lifestyle. (9/19/2010 4:12:56 PM)

You bite the heads off of chickens?? Yikes, even I am not so hard-core!
But I am a fan of rum, so will raise a glass in toast! Cheers!

MasterMalcolm -> RE: Geek as a lifestyle. (9/19/2010 5:00:53 PM)

Arrr!  No longer do geeks bite chickens!

I confuse the fuck outta people by using a much more historically accurate Jamaican accent, while everyone else does impressions of an old actor doing baaad cornish.

~FR~

My current Dom is a Nerd (and also something of a geek, too, I think), and DAMN does that man know his way around a woman's body! Wooooooo! :::fanning self:::

Not to hijack the thread, but do you self-proclaimed geeks differentiate between the term "Geek" and "Nerd?" I think they are different, but I was curious if others thought so, too.

hausboy -> RE: Geek as a lifestyle. (9/19/2010 8:05:49 PM)

I got this off of "ask.com" and they cited wikipedia as the source:
the poster responded to the geek vs. nerd question with the answer below:
" geek is basically someone who's interested (By interested I mean obsessed .)with certain areas of knowledge. You know, a computer geek, a science fiction geek, etc. A nerd, on the other hand, is someone who, instead of being normal and having a life, devotes himself purely to knowledge. Nerds are usually very unsocial and have problems in normal social environments."

or you could define a geek as one who goes to a query website to find an answer to questions posed on a forum.

either way, guilty as charged.  dammit.

LanceHughes -> RE: Geek as a lifestyle. (9/19/2010 8:23:00 PM)

"Geeks in suits" are today's IT stars.... they "get 'er done."

Not sure nerds own suits.  Their obsessions usually override performance.  Nerds "live" on / for / in My2ndLife and such cyber-spaces.  I knew a nerd so into that kinda on-line role play that he told me once "I can't be away for more than 12 hours or I lose possessions or power or whatever......"  I really didn't listen to him after he said "I can't be away for more than...."

His Grandmother had died and the body shipped to Denver from Florida.  So far so good. Now it's time to BE in Florida to take care of real property in her estate... basically probate.  So, he flies to Florida to set-up internet access, but can't get it done in the time he had (this before wi-fi, copper-to-copper land lines only.)  I thought he could just use lawyer's or real estate agent's phone.  Nope, flew back to Denver to live his other life.  Lather, rinse, repeat until he had land line at G'Ma's house.

Think Dungeons & Dragons on internet using avatars and a much richer player set, etc.  Yes, there's cyber-sex galore..... Even so, his character can't get laid.  HHHhhhhmmmm.... sounds like a nerd to me.

I'm a computer geek since I was able to "de-code" the definition of a geek.  First step?  Knowing what language the 0s and 1s were written in.  And where to put the spaces between the characters.  Oops!  Maybe I've said too much? Nah.

I've been looking for a new slogan.  You remember "We're here, we're queer! get used to it!"

It doesn't work so well with, "We're meek, we're Geek! Get used to it."

Especially because most geeks aren't meek.

And the fact that we can let _all_ of your secrets be free for the taking is lost on most people.  But we are easily sedated: Just say, "ARRRR" to celebrate Talk Like  a Pirate day  and I promise I won't tell your boss.  ;-D

Noe: I am just joking.  I have no knowledge of precisely who you are.  They'd blackhole my IP if I was lying.  I mean, really [CARRIER LOST]

MasterMalcolm -> RE: Geek as a lifestyle. (9/19/2010 9:02:52 PM)

Not Bi-Sexual.  But I do practice safe hex.
