I was wondering what people consider pros and cons of the flu shot based upon their experience?

So while i am going to be talking to my doc on Friday, i was wondering what the average person's take on it is.  Do you get one, why?  If not, why?  Did it help, did it make you have a cold or get sick? Did you still get the flu or a strain of it?

My immune system is impaired, so I used to buy an influenza vaccination; especially in order to avoid painful and contagious herpes complication.

Last year I did not trust the government conspiracy theories, suggesting that the vaccination might have been tampered with, so I did not buy it.

For these past tow years I also have been using a bicycle instead of public transport and that in a major way reduces the risk of being infected.

I do not know what I will do this year. I have some tablets to suppress the herpes, so I may risk it and take those if I get a cold or the flu.

I always get the flu shot every year as I'm a diabetic, have congestive heart failure and I am very susceptible to the flu. I swear by it. I've never gotten the flu, not even so much as a cold from the shot.
And my arm has never gotten sore from the shot either. But then I conciously move my arm more after the shot so it doesnt get stiff and sore. As far as I am concerned the pros far outweigh the risks of not getting the shot, period

They always make me sick, so I don't get one. I have a lot of sinus problems in the winter, but I rarely get the flu.

My company provides it free to any one that wants it. I get it. I hate being sick. I do EVERYTHING I can to avoid getting sick.

I rarely get sick.

(for the sinus thing......try a neti pot. It is the most wonderful thing EVER for sinus crap.)

I get it every year (I am in the health field) without any problems at all. Being in the health field I highly recommend it.

And I don't know how the vaccine could have been deliberately tampered with last year since it was being made by multiple different companies worldwide in multiple formulations so they would all have to be tampered with worldwide.

And by the way, you can not get the flu from the injection (though you can react to it). Remember, thousands die every year in this country from the flu.

This is probably the wrong place to look for average people :)
I think they are a good idea for anyone with a weak immune system, but I don't bother to get them because I have a very strong immune system.

I got the flu shot once last year. I've never had the flu and haven't had a cold in years. I did it because I work with children (they're like sponges, sucking everything up even parasites ewww) and the mother was a doctor. The day after I got the vaccine, I was sick with the flu. Never again I tell you! I take vitamins daily, exercise when I can and try to eat healthy. I carry hand sanitizer, and I wash my hands frequently. But the vaccine effects everyone differently.

There is literally no way the flu shot caused you to have flu symptoms after 24 hours. Even if a live virus had managed to somehow get into a dose it takes several days for enough virus to reproduce to cause symptoms.

She may have had a strong immune response to the vaccination, so presumably she already had earlier come into contact with the virus.

It is because of the immune response that people feel sick - and get better. If their immune system did not function, they would not feel sick if they got the flu - but die as a consequence because the virus was not opposed.

I've never had a flu shot, only ever had the flu once. I'm a healthy person so I don't bother. I may in a few years though when I hit 40.

Personally, I've never had a flu shot.  I'm a tad suspicious by nature, and the whole swine flu business smacked of media hype to me.  I prefer to eat garlic, cayenne pepper, drink apple cider vinegar, wash my hands (not obsessively), and make an effort not to get stressed.  So far so good.

If you have underlying illness or are a healthcare worker I'd advise you to have the shot.
If not, then it's really not that necessary.

I get them every year now, have done so since the year I didn't but did get the flu. The shot is much better than spending two weeks flat on my back.

I get the pneumonia vaccine every ten years. And tetanus every ten also.

But then, I'm old enough to remember outbreaks of deadly diseases and smart enough to know that I can't rely on herd immunity when the herd is not getting their vaccinations.

Only really used here for healthcare professionals, the very old and the very young.

I don't fall into any of these categories so I'm not that fussed.

I sometimes wonder if it could be avoided by culling those that have obvious signs of a runny nose at the earliest opportunity.

I got the flu last year - worst week of my life physically. I was so achy in my hips that i couldn't lie down for several hours - in the middle of the night of course. Fever, myalgia, nausea, diarrhea, lethary - the whole nine yards     -   and the real kicker was, my company gave out flu shots two weeks later, and i got one!  No way i want that again, so yes, i'm getting the flu shot.

You did not get the flu from the vaccine. What happened was that one of the lovely kids you work with (or someone else) had given it to you, the incubation period was still going on the day you got the shot and you came down with it the following day.
