My doctor told me years ago not to get them, even though I had health problems. He felt it would be worse for me for some reason and I wish I could call him up now and find out why he felt that. This year I must get the flu shot and the whooping cough shot. I am terrified! I don't react like other people do and that old warning sticks in my mind. I didn't have a virus for ten years. Two years ago I moved to MO and near my grandchildren and had so many viruses I can't even count them. I got the H1N! and that lead to serious complications. The flu wasn't that bad, it was what came next and for months I suffered.

It is getting to the point that anytime I go out and mingle with people, a few days later I am sick. I don't want these preventive measures, but at this point it is weighing out the odds and if one thing doesn't get me another will. I am just terrified of how my body will react to whatever is in the shots. I am not afraid of the virus from a shot, but the chemicals in the shot that will mess with me because my major illness is not understood or known about in the medical community and no one has the expertise to explain with any assurance that it won't hurt me. Hell, I can't even take aspirin!

I am not happy about this, but what can ya do? It's life... so if you don't ever see me again... you know the shots got me! lol

Ok, I would say that you should look at your overall immunological constitution. That is to say, "How often do you get sick?" . I have had the flu more often as a result of the shot than due to actual contagion. I learned early-on in the Navy that if you don't want to get the flu, avoid the shot. I now completely eschew the damn thing, and once in a great while I will acquire some mild flu-like symptoms that last a day or so, and then I'm just fine whilst all around me are dropping like flies. I believe Nancy Regan's phrase applies here, "Just say no!"

The flu shot contains neither dead nor partially alive virus. It does trigger an immune response that, depending on the person, can cause you to have sniffles, etc. but not the flu. If you get the flu you would be out of action for days. One CAN NOT get the flu from the flu shot as it does not contain the virus itself.

Key Facts About Seasonal Flu Vaccine

There are two types of vaccines:

   * The "flu shot" — an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.

   * The nasal-spray flu vaccine —a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu (sometimes called LAIV for "live attenuated influenza vaccine" or FluMist®). LAIV (FluMist®) is approved for use in healthy* people 2-49 years of age who are not pregnant.

From the CDC. Emphasis added.

Lockit, are you taking large amounts of Vitamin DIII? Meaning several thousand daily. The pediatrician said as it's winter my son should up his daily dosage to 2000 and that he himself takes 5000 because he spends his days with sick kids.

Is everybody on here who's claiming to get sniffles after having a shot aware that there's a slight difference between a nasty cold and influenza? "Man flu" doesn't count, I'm afraid.

Important point and I would say that most people don't know the difference. And why? Because a large percentage of the population does get the vaccine thus providing herd immunity.

If you ever have influenza for real, you will know the difference.

For me, the difference is you come down with a cold. A cold is not a sudden onset illness. You get the sniffles, and then a runny nose. You may get a mild sore throat or cough but the progression takes place over a couple of days... and if you run a fever at all, it is very mild and short lived. It lasts a week or less.

The flu hits you hard and fast. Fever with chills, severe aches and coughing along with a runny nose. Some people may have a sore throat and some people may have upset stomach symptoms. The fever can linger and you feel weak and tired. The symptoms can persist for 2 weeks or more.
Secondary respiratory infections are more common.

Antibiotics help neither the cold nor flu.

It is rather unmistakeable, one hour your feel fine and are thinking about your plans for the upcoming weekend and suddenly out of nowhere, you know you are in deep shit. Your fever makes your skin hurt when the air hits it.
You know you are on the mend when you aren't exhausted by simple things like brushing your teeth, combing your hair and changing your jammies.
