I have a feeling this incident isnt over yet.

It makes me wonder about the pets who died. Would the fire department have sat and watched while a human died in a fire?

Depends on whether or not they had anything better to be doing, I suppose.
"Aaaw! he's stopped wriggling, dude! This is totally Brad!"

Every day we all make choices in our lives. This guy made a concious decision to not pay $75.00 for fire protection for his home. I don't feel sorry for him in the least.

I can just imagine his priceless rugs,  chandeliers, antiques and collectibles.  I am sure his fine family had the best of everything- and all items were in impeccable condition.

I also would guess there are no appliances in the yard- or cars up and blocks.

HA

What, so it would have been okay if the bloke lived in a shitpile, but it isn't because he had a nice house?

Well this sure is new to me. Non-universal fire service.

Think of it as insurance.

So much for the "compassionate conservative".

Isnt this what the libertarians and tea party movements are begging for?

Lucylastic -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 1:58:23 PM)

Moon, my turn to ask, are you really surprised??

I'm a conservative. I never said I was compassionate. I'm sick of responsible people who have to foot the bill for losers like this. Maybe he can call FEMA ?

Lucylastic -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 2:16:00 PM)

Theres a lot of things you  aren't Servant.
compassion is one of the lesser problems

Even Bush was into compassionate conservatism.

What's the problem, Lucy? A house burning down because somebody didn't pay a subscription is capitalism in action, as God intended. Surely you wouldn't want some evil marxist system where revenues for a non volunteer fire service are raised from taxation?

Exaggeration aside....when was the last time you heard anyone say providing firefighting protection was a Marxist idea?
The only such arrangements I am aware of are specialized response companies that are used to protect specific industries to supplement local firefighters and even they are rare.

Are there any subscription-only fire services in the US anyone knows of?

Ardent capitalist that I am, there ARE certain things I believe local government must provide to all as part of your tax structure - a legitimate item funded by taxation for public safety - firefighting is one of them.

I dont care how much money someone has.

but as a neighbor- I do not want to smell a burn barrel- and I do not want to look at a pig sty.

The head of FEMA (...is it still Fugate? .....or has he abandoned ship too? ...) is a former volunteer firefighter.....I'm guessing he'd have the Scott pack on and in the building ....

I'm not sure where the "compassionate conservative" thing came from....its' as inaccurate as "compassionate liberal"....

I posted the link about compassionate conservatism. Perhaps reading it may be helpful.

Lucylastic -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 2:50:37 PM)

you cant have it all your own way MC, liberals will always be bleeding hearts, which is actually stronger than compassionate..so that doesnt work,
*raspberry* neener!
[:D]

I have talked to six firefighters since this morning and not one of them would have just stood around, that said, they are all city large town FF so its not really an issue of denying anyone their skills for lack of money.

hlen5 -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 3:07:19 PM)

Each fire department has an assigned area (district) where I live. When I pay my real estate tax to the county, I pay a set percentage of my assessed value to my fire district to cover fire protection.

It sounds like not paying is an option there. The homeowner gambled and lost. If everyone waited until they needed it there would be no money to be prepared. What an expensive lesson for his family and what a perfect lesson for everyone else there that you need to pay for fire protection.

PyrotheClown -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 3:19:27 PM)

the firefighters in the town of morongo valley let a restaurant burn on an election year when there was a ballot initiative for a pay raise for them...don't believe me, well if you ever find your self passing through the morongo basin on highway 62 you should check it out, the restaurant in question was ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE FORESTATION!the official response was that they couldn't find a fire hydrant... which is right infront of the station(they use the same one to rinse out their hoses and train fire explores)...Gotta love sanbernardino county

The part that gets me a little angry is that the man offered to pay them whatever it would cost to save his home. If they needed the $75, why not just say.. write the check... then do their jobs? The man offered, from all accounts i have read, and they did nothing.
