The way i understood this situation was that the fire department was for the city/town, and presumably paid for by taxes paid by the townies. If people in the country wanted fire protection they had to pay the fee. So the fire department isn't responsible for fires out of the town .
This twit didn't want to cough up the money and lost. C'est la vie!
You pays your money, and you takes your ride. He didn't pay and lost.    And now he wants to whine.   Tough titty!

The part that gets me a little angry is that the man offered to pay them whatever it would cost to save his home. If they needed the $75, why not just say.. write the check... then do their jobs? The man offered, from all accounts i have read, and they did nothing.

So I can buy theft insurance when my car is being stolen?  Not before but when it is en progress?

kiwisub12 -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 3:40:22 PM)

I can't believe i am saying this   -  BUT  - i agree with Pa.   Where is the difference with me not buying termite insurance and then wanting the company to fix the damage and kill the infestation when i discover it, and i'll pay the fee.  Its not as dramatic as a fire, but just as damaging to my house. If you want fire protection in that area, pay the money and you will be covered. Don't and your house will burn down.  Very simple.

hlen5 -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 3:54:10 PM)

If they had put it out, it would set a bad precedent.

His neighbors would think, yep I think I'll keep the $75 in my pocket and throw it at them if my house starts to go.

Someone else suggested they bill him for all costs after the fact. 8(?) firemen, trucks, water, hoses. That might have been a way to go.

It's a shame it happened. And at least they could have gone in for the pets, billing the guy triple time or something. It sounds like the guy had hours to get them himself though, maybe he left the fire unattended?

pahunkboy -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 3:56:17 PM)

-- the fire happened from this guy burning garbage in 2 burn barrels in his yard.

So- it is not like it was a furnace fire- or an electrical short.

To answer you both, very simply, he offered before the fire hit his home.

The fire reportedly started in some barrels outside. As the flames crept closer to the home, Cranick says he offered to pay whatever it would take. The plea fell on deaf ears. Hours later, the home was gone.

If your car is stolen, the act is done. If you have termite damage, the act is done. His home had not burned yet... they allowed it to happen, even after offer of payment.

His house was on fire when he offered the $75.

Watch the video.

Think of flood insurance.   There is a waiting period.   Suppose it is 3 days.  You can not see your house will get a flood and then get the insurance.   Not until the waiting period is done.

He did not offer to pay until his burn barrel that a fire he set- got out of control.

the annual fee is not refunded if there is no fire.

tazzygirl -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 4:22:28 PM)

But you can buy house insurance the day or the fire. Paying for a service isnt the same as insurance. Insurance is a hedge against the fact that it will or will not happen. Flood insurance, hurricane insurance, all those kinds have factors figured into the availability, such as the last time it happened, how high were the last floods, ect.

A Fire Department is not insurance against anything. It is a service. One he offered to pay for... one they denied his payment for even after they were on site and could have prevented the damage.

I see this getting extremely imteresting.

Yeah-  he is now arrested.

South Fulton Fire Chief David Wilds was treated at an area hospital after being assaulted about 5:45 p.m. at the city’s fire station, located in the South Fulton Municipal Building.
Timothy A. Cranick, 44, a resident of Buddy Jones Road near South Fulton, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault, according to South Fulton Police Chief Andy Crocker./snip

It will be even more interesting if the mayor of South Fulton is a democrat. Will Keith Olberman still blame the teaparty ??

Who fronts the money for supplies and equipment- ?

That $75-  would come from somewhere- who fronts that money?

pahunkboy -> RE: LET IT BURN?!? Firefighters Watch Home Go Up In Flames Over $75 Fee (10/5/2010 4:33:04 PM)

Fire Apparatus & equipment cost money to purchase. Someone has to provide the necessary funding. Concerned, sensible, prudent individuals are willing to contribute toward this goal. Selfish, stingy tightwads sponge off of other people. Cronic gamblers believe they will always be lucky. Well, luck doesn't always go our way and it is reprehensible to expect others to pay our debts. Who would build or purchase a $200,000+ house and not insure it? We expect too much from the world. Pray that God will save you, but get off the tracks when you hear the whistle. Should I risk my life, the lives of my unpaid firemen, and a firetruck paid for & insured with other people's money for someone too stingy to attend our dept spaghetti supper, buy our fund-raising raffle ticket, or pay a subscription fee? I'll have to think hard about that one./snip

It was Gene's house. Not Timothy's.

fr

and this is precisely why you all gotta have GUBMINT, because the people are to damn ignorant to set themselves up properly.

Anyone moving into the hood needs to sign a compact with their neighbors on how they want to conduct themselves with each other.

Likewise contract with the garbage etc. and your tax bills would be about couple hundred bucks.

BUT no people cannot do that they would rather have some asswipe bureaucrat force them to pay 100 times more and enforce the same rules on everyone regardless if the apply for your immediate community or not.

The people can then vote if they want you in their hood.

WOW real freedom of making your own contracts regarding your own back yard.

novel huh?

Anyway the house should have been saved and a bill sent with a 2 times multipier on it.

Who fronts what money? You are assuming that all the money they get is from that 75 dollar fee? That isnt enough to even get them rolling the trucks out of the building if you are placing this at a fee basis. So they wouldnt put out his fire, by they could afford to put out another fire caused by his, thus increasing the damages and not preventing the fire from spreadint to anothers property. Yep, makes perfect sense to me... not.

Now compare that to coverage of pre-existing conditions in health care. If everyone is allowed to wait till their house is on fire to buy coverage, there isnt enough money to put out any fires.

This has already been responded to above. If everyone waits till their house is burning to pay the $75 there would be no gas in the fire engine....if there were a fire engine.

This thread- I think you better worry about.   Being that you live in PA.  PA has been placing more trainings and so forth on volunteers- that we are losing our men.   THAT is something to worry about.
