Wait -  so if I was a black guy,  I would have to be a Dem?

Why?

Seems odd- that anyone can take anyone for granted.

Is that video from January 2009?

How did that end up working out anyway?

No, it makes perfect sense.

Why do you think the Koch Brothers and Wall Street fund the Tea Party? Why do they fixate on racial animosity and class resentment of "elite" liberals?

They whip up the ethnic and class fears of the working class white groups as pawns to advance their agenda.

This is why the Tea Party doesn't have a clear logical agenda, it doesn't need one; it needs only the fear and rage of the working class whites who don't see who is pulling the strings.

That only works when the other side isn't offering anything better.

AnimusRex -> RE: Working-class whites shun Dems (10/6/2010 7:21:31 PM)

What could possibly be better than hating on foreigners and teh gheys?

What could be more morally satisfying than incinerating brown skinned families over in Pakistan as a way of demonstrating the superiority of Jeebus?

What could possibly be more fulfilling than sitting in your double wide and sneering at the welfare mother in her single wide as a lazy slacker?

This is politics as comfort food.

Not sure, maybe hating on the ignorant and uneducated, forsaking an entire demographic as a lost cause of bigots and hate mongers rather than trying to address the underlying issues, meeting their shortcomings with disdain and mockery, then nodding in smug self satisfaction when they live up to the expectations that you've encouraged?

Comfort food indeed.

AnimusRex -> RE: Working-class whites shun Dems (10/6/2010 7:45:22 PM)

As opposed to what?

As opposed to cynically exploiting them for the benefit of Wall Street and corporate lobbyists?

See, as a member of the working class, who grew up in the very rural white America that was described, I have no romantic misconceptions about the working class.

There are plenty of white working class people who aren't Tea Party crazies, who don't go around with Obama-si-a-moozlim bumper stickers. A lot of religious people who are genuinely concerned about poverty, and are willing to help and share a sacrifice for their brethren.

But many aren't. There are many working class white people who are easily seduced by the rhetoric of ethnic hatred and class resentment, and choose that comfort food instead of facing the more difficult reality that there is a class war in America, and they are on the losing side.

I realize that there are a lot of genuine bigots in the US, but I really don't think they are the majority. I think it's disgusting the way some Republicans are capitalizing on the recession in order to get a little "congressperson" title instead of working overtime to fix it. But that's democracy I guess.

However I still stand by my original statement - that only works when the other side isn't offering anything better. There are two options here:

a) Democrats aren't meeting the needs of rural white voters.

b) Democrats aren't effectively demonstrating how they are meeting the needs of rural white voters.

Obviously the plan of action would be different for each option...I don't know, I laugh at the Tea Party as much as anyone, but I'm living 10k miles away and hardly the best example of a political role model...I just think that if Democrats actually wanted to fight that tea party mentality among some Americans they need to fix their tactics.

I don't think everyone at tea party rallies think Obama is a Muslim Marxist communofascist n***** Antichrist...some of them are probably just unhappy with their situation in life and looking for answers. The Democrats are not only not giving them answers, they seem to be dismissing and ignoring them.

OUCH! Good one.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense to alienate any voter does it?
The Demos must think "everyone" went to Harvard and Brown.

You know, Kirata, I thought for a moment that maybe my words were over the top, maybe a bit too strong. But then I remembered how one of GWB's generals was caught talking about how this was in fact a holy war, that "our God was bigger than their God" and was only fired due to the embarrassment he caused.

I thought about how Eric Prince, the CEO of Blackwater is convinced that he is fighting a religious crusade against Islam, and how his forces have committed murder and senseless slaughter, even to the point of gunning down government officials in Afghanistan- without any repercussions.

About how many of our unmanned drones blow up buildings without any way of knowing who or what is inside, and the reports of entire families being incinerated mistakenly.

So on balance, it seems pretty reasonable to say that America is incinerating families in Pakistan to show the superiority of Jeebus.

Sadly so.

I wouldn't disagree with those sentiments. But then again, someone who is blue collar, unemployed, and thinks that the solution to their misery is to give the Wall Street banksters another million dollar tax cut, really does deserve whatever ridicule and scorn are heaped on them.

Meh, someone who's educated and white collar who underestimates the power of the disaffected to fuck things up deserves whatever Congress is thrust upon him.

The Huffington Post, January 2008
Blackwater, that reactionary private mercenary outfit headed by the right-wing Christian nationalist Erik Prince stands to lose big time with an Obama presidency... Under an Obama Administration Blackwater would no doubt be cut down to size along with Bush's other crony capitalist entities.

CBS News, June 2010
CBS News has learned in an exclusive report that the State Department has awarded a part of what was formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide a contract worth more than $120 million for providing security services in Afghanistan.

So unh, Obama and Hillary are conservative working-class white folks?

And, as cable TV is more or less ubiquitous throughout the country, excepting perhaps rural Alaska (and even they have AlaskaNet), the information to learn about things is readily available. Moreso than ever, I do believe.

What we have is a sizeable percentage of the population who rely on "found knowledge"; by that I mean pseudo-facts which are taken as true due to the acceptance of the purveyor as being some sort of authority. It's an Appeal to Authority writ large, so to speak. The Becks and Limbaughs and Hannitys are taken at their word because they are seen as speaking from positions of authority, which is to say that they are perceived as having information that the average person is not privy to. It's the same psychological mechanism by which people accept the bible as "found wisdom" or "found truth". These are the True Believers which Vance Packard wrote about. No thought is required. In fact, critical thinking is Heresy (So-and-so is a RINO because she don't think like us).

And we find them repeating the same themes over an over, regardless of the original discussion, As an example, Yahoo Finance featured a WSJ article, "Slim Odds For Inventors". Here is a typical comment:
"in 2012 election is about
Food Stamps or Pay Checks.
if you are lazy a ss you vote democrats /food stamps
if you willing to work every day you vote republican
in this case democrats will win .
lazy people it s ok just vote for obama s your food stamps guaranteed ."

Besides being completely unrelated to the article, the comment is an incoherent pastiche of right-wing memes which have absolutely no basis in reality.

I cannot tell you (I am not addressing this to rightards, as I could give a flying fuck what they think, or want) how pissed off I get at these stupid Gomers. I have drawn a total of 3 weeks of unemployment in my life. I have spent many hours crawling around grouting tile, painting baseboards, laying oak and bamboo flooring in my rental houses, which I bought with my own down payment money. I pay property taxes, pay my dues for my Homeowners Association, and all that other shit. And some stupid cocksucker like Fuckheadman or Wilbur or FuckedDawg has the fucking nerve to say I'm a Marxist Democrat who hates America and supports terrorists and all that other moronic Fascist rightard bullshit?

You know what, Wilber? RacerJim? Fuckyman? Servant? LuckyDawg? Firm? Poopeye? FUCK YOU.
